Underwood said her office's 21-month investigation, begun under her predecessor Eric Schneiderman, uncovered "extensive unlawful political coordination" by the foundation withTrump's campaign, as well as "repeated and willful self-dealing" to benefit Trump's personal, business and political interests.

Among the transactions the lawsuit cited as illegal was a $10,000 payment to the Unicorn Children's Foundation for a portrait of Trump purchased at a fundraising auction in 2014, and $100,000 paid to another charity to settle a legal claim in 2007.

The lawsuit filed in the state Supreme Court in Manhattan is seeking $2.8 million of restitution plus penalties, a 10-year ban on Trump serving as a director of a New York nonprofit, and one-year bans for his children.

New York sues Trump, his foundation, over illegal 'self dealing'

In a bid to ensure that Donald J Trump Foundation is complying with state laws governing nonprofits, New York attorney general Eric Schneiderman on Tuesday informed he had opened an inquiry into the the Republican presidential nominee's charity.

In an interview with CNN, he confirmed his office had brought Trump's charitable foundation under scrutiny.

The inquiry comes in the wake of "troubling transactions that have recently come to light", the Guardian reported today quoting anonymous sources.

A supporter of Trump's Democratic rival in the presidential race, Hillary Clinton, Schneiderman sued the real estate mogul and his now defunct Trump University for fraud in 2013 seeking $40 million in restitution plus penalties and other costs.

The comments come a week after the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) fined the Trump Foundation $2,500 for making an illegal campaign contribution to Florida attorney general Pam, according to the Guardian. Bondi is a longtime Trump supporter who decided not to investigate Trump University.

"My interest in this issue really is in my capacity as regulator of nonprofits in New York state. And we have been concerned that the Trump Foundation may have engaged in some impropriety from that point of view," the elected Democratic official was quoted as saying by Reuters.

"We have been looking into the Trump Foundation to make sure it's complying with the laws that govern charities in New York."

Schneiderman, however, did not elaborate on what wrongdoing Trump's nonprofit might have committed.

The Democratic official's assertions, however, were dismissed by Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung who said the move was entirely motivated by presidential politics. Cheung also called the attorney general a "partisan hack who has turned a blind eye to the Clinton Foundation for years."

Schneiderman's comments are "nothing more than another left-wing hit job designed to distract" attention from Clinton's recent missteps on the campaign trail, he said.
