A rare canvas of rock art has been discovered hidden in the caves of Colombia's Amazon forest which tells us a different tale of early settlers.

The canvas of human history was found in the wilderness of the forest by an international team of researchers from the&nbsp;Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Universidad de Antioquia and the&nbsp;University of Exeter.

The cave is located in the Serranía de la Lindosa, Cerro Azul which is a tabletop hill near the Guayabero River and has been an important part of the early humans who were in the Amazon.

On this hill are hidden multiple rock arts which serve as a testament to the beliefs and lives of the early settlers of the region.&nbsp;

Associate Professor in Exeter’s Department of Archaeology and History Dr Mark Robinson said, “These rock art sites include the earliest evidence of humans in western Amazonia, dating back 12,500 years ago. As such, the art is an amazing insight into how these first settlers understood their place in the world and how they formed relationships with animals.”

The detailed study of animal remains found in the excavations was carried out by the team and the artistic depictions were analysed which revealed an intriguing discrepancy.

The researchers observed that the images of animals and humans suggested some species were revered and said to possess supernatural connections, which may have given birth to complex rituals.&nbsp;

Dr. Javier Aceituno, who is from Universidad de Antioquia, Medellín, said, “The Indigenous people of Cerro Azul and the surrounding lands hunted and depicted a diverse array of animals from different ecologies – from aquatic fish to arboreal monkeys; terrestrial deer to aerial birds, both nocturnal and diurnal."

He added, “They had intimate knowledge of the various habitats in the region and possessed the relevant skills to hunt animals and harvest plants from each, as part of a broad subsistence strategy.”

The archaeologists at Macquarie University, in a new study, have described the 16 rock art sites which were discovered in the deserts around Wadi Halfa, which is a city in northern Sudan close to the border with Egypt. In the different figures depicted in the art, the researchers discovered illustrations of humans, antelopes, elephants, and giraffes. According to the archaeologists, cattle also appeared often, which was surprising in the wake of the hyper-arid climate of the Atbai Desert. The region today receives almost no annual rainfall which has made cattle pastoralism impossible. In contrast to this, the rock art displays that cattle farming was a common theme of people living in the area in 3000 BCE. Cooper headed a team of archaeologists involved in the Atbai Survey Project in 2018 and 2019. “The presence of cattle in ancient rock art is one of the most important pieces of evidence establishing a once ‘green Sahara’,” Cooper said.
