<h2>What happened?</h2>

The accident occurred around 10:45 am (local time) when a container truck hit four vehicles and then rammed into a roadside restaurant on a highway in Dhule. The truck was said to be travelling towards Dhule from the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh’s Indore.&nbsp;

The incident took place near Palasner village on the Mumbai-Agra highway in Dhule which is some 300 kilometres away from the state capital. The news agency PTI reported that the brakes of the truck failed, following which its driver lost control of the wheels.&nbsp;

The news agency report, citing RTO officials, also said the truck had hit a motorcycle a few kilometres ahead of the site of the accident and the driver was apparently speeding in panic.&nbsp;

<h2>What do we know about the victims?</h2>

According to the police, the victims include those waiting for the bus near the roadside restaurant, although the officials did not specify if they were injured or killed. The truck driver and his assistant, who are reported to be residents of Chittorgarh in the Indian state of Rajasthan, were killed in&nbsp;the accident.&nbsp;

Additionally, two women and a 17-year-old teenager were among the deceased, said the police. Those injured were taken to nearby hospitals in Shirpur and Dhule by the local police of which one of them was said to be in critical condition, while the status of other victims was not&nbsp;known. The identities of the victims were also not&nbsp;immediately known.&nbsp;

<h2>‘Very sad’: Maharashtra deputy CM expresses deepest condolences</h2>

In a statement, the Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis called the incident “very sad” and expressed his deepest condolences to the bereaved families. The deputy CM also said that he wishes for a speedy recovery of those injured and that his administration will provide any help needed.&nbsp;

At least 11&nbsp;people have been killed&nbsp;after a truck collided with a car, on Wednesday night (May 3), in the Indian state of&nbsp;Chhattisgarh, reported news agency ANI citing a police official. The&nbsp;collision took place on&nbsp;National Highway-30, near&nbsp;Jagatra&nbsp;in the Balod district.&nbsp; 
 
The accident was also confirmed by Chhattisgarh&nbsp;Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, who expressed grief over the loss of life and prayed for the recovery of the injured. Speaking about the incident he said&nbsp;that the car was headed to a wedding function when the crash took place near Balodgahan between Purur and Charma. 
 
"It has just been reported that 10 people have died and one girl is in critical condition in a collision between a Bolero and a truck going to a marriage function near Balodgahan between Purur and Charma in Balod. May God give peace to the departed souls and courage to their families. I pray for the recovery of the injured girl," said&nbsp;Baghel, on Twitter.&nbsp; 
 
According to the Superintendent of Police (SP), Balod Jitendra Kumar Yadav, the injured have been taken to the Indian city of Raipur for&nbsp;better treatment, while the search for the driver of the truck is underway, reported ANI.&nbsp; 
 
"10 killed and one child seriously injured after a truck and car collided near Jagatra in Balod district," said Yadav, as quoted by ANI. 
 
However, hours later&nbsp;Arun Kumar Sahu, Station House Officer of Purur police station, said while&nbsp;ten occupants of the Mahindra Bolero died on the spot, a child succumbed to injuries while being shifted to hospital.&nbsp; 
 
In the update on the accident, the officer also said that the&nbsp;bodies have been sent for postmortem and efforts to&nbsp;trace the truck driver who fled the scene leaving behind his vehicle continued, as of Thursday morning.&nbsp; 
 
According to local media, those involved in the accident are said to be from the&nbsp;Dhamtari district of&nbsp;Chhattisgarh.&nbsp;It is said the family was heading to Markatola village of Kanker district&nbsp;from Soram, as per media reports.

India saw a sharp 79 per cent rise in road accident deaths due to red-light jumping in the year 2020 compared to 2019, a latest report said.

However, the number of total road accidents and the fatalities declined by 18 percent and 12.8 percent, respectively, in 2020.

Indian Ministry of Road Transport and Highways' report 'Road Accidents in India - 2020' revealed that a total of 3,66,138 road accidents were reported across the country in the calendar year 2020, which claimed 1,31,714 lives and caused 3, 48,279 injuries.

Out of the total road accidents in 2020, 919 were caused by jumping of traffic signal which killed 476 people, which is a significant increase from 2019, when 266 people died due to red light jumping.

Apart from red-light jumping, another category which saw a rise in fatalities was driving on the wrong side of the road.

As many as 3,099 people died in accidents due to driving on wrong side of the road in 2020 compared to 2,726 deaths in 2019.

However, the top cause of road accidents remained over speeding which led to over one lakh road accidents in 2020.

According to the report, the highest decline, of 21 percent, was recorded in fatalities due to drunken driving in 2020 with 1862 deaths compared to 2376 deaths in 2019.

The report cited COVID-19 lockdown as one of the reasons for the decline in the number of accidents and fatalities during 2020 compared to 2019.

Other factors attributed by the Indian government to the reduced number were better traffic management and implementation of the new Motor Vehicle Act.

At least one out of 10 people killed on roads across the world is from India, according to the World Health Organization and though the Indian government's report says the number has declined, it is still huge and accounts for world's 11 percent road accident fatalities.

The report said that young adults in the age group of 18 - 45 years accounted for 69 per cent of fatal road accident victims during 2020 while people in the working age group of 18 – 60 years share 87.4 per cent of total road accident fatalities.

It said that the number of road accidents has been on a decline since 2016 except for a marginal increase of 0.46 per cent in 2018.

"For the second consecutive year, the total number of road accidents fatalities has declined in 2020.

Similarly, the number of persons injured has been on the decline since 2015," it said.

The number of persons injured decreased by 22.84 per cent over previous year’s average, said the report, which provides information on various facets of road accidents in the country during the calendar year 2020.

As per the report, Indian states which achieved significant reduction in road accidents in 2020 were Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Karnataka.

And the states that saw a significant decline in road accident fatalities in 2020 were Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh.

Fatalities and injuries caused by road accidents are becoming the matters of great concern particularly with the recent surge in motorization, due to increasing population and increased vehicular penetration across the length and breadth of India.

In a bid to reduce the number of road accidents and fatalities, the Indian government is now planning to use artificial intelligence powered solutions to alert drivers and avoid collisions on roads.

India experiences 79 per cent rise in road accident deaths due to red-light jumping in 2020

A 21-year-old on his way back from a party was involved in multiple hit-and-run cases on Monday morning. Two people died and one person was critically injured, the police said. 
 
Police said Rishabh - a resident of west Delhi&#39;s Janakpuri -- was driving his father&#39;s Honda City car at a speed of over 100 kmph and hit 3 persons over a 1.5 km stretch before he was stopped and caught. 
 
According to the police, the first victim was 40-year-old Kameshwar Prasad, a government employee, who was out for a morning walk. The impact of the speeding car threw him several metres away. 
 
But Rishabh did not stop, the police said. He drove on and next hit 40-year-old Santosh, who was cleaning cars in a residential area. He sped away again, driving in the wrong lane, and then hit 67-year-old Ashwani Anand, a property dealer who also was out for a morning walk with a neighbour.&nbsp; 
 
CCTV footage recovered from the area showed Mr Anand&#39;s accident. In the footage, which surfaced later in the day, Mr Anand could be seen noticing the car and trying to escape by running towards a pavement. But the car did not stop, and hit him. 
 
A police patrolling team chased and intercepted Rishabh after covering quite a distance. Police said Rishabh was in such a state that he couldn&#39;t even manage to stand up. 
 
Santosh, who was critically injured, is battling for his life. The police said he is not in a condition to give his statement. 
 
The car, which is registered in Rishabh&#39;s father&#39;s name, has been seized. The police said they found liquor bottles inside. 
 
Rishabh, the son of a businessman -- is a student of business administration in a college under a prominent government university in Delhi. He has been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder and other charges under Indian Penal Code and Motor Vehicles Act, said senior police officer Pushpendra Kumar.
