Not many know that the Republican Party was founded by anti-slavery activists in 1854.

Possibly the most well-known figure in the Republican party is&nbsp;Abraham Lincoln, who became the first Republican president and went on to serve from 1861 to 1865 till his assassination.

Lincoln's election in 1860 took place amid the conflict between the pro-slavery southern states and the rest of the union, which eventually led to the American Civil War following the secession move by the South.

Under Lincoln, the abolitionist North won the Civil War, and the Republican president made the Emancipation Proclamation, which set the US on a path towards ending slavery.

Republican party gave several other prominent presidents including Ulysses S Grant, Theodore Roosevelt and Ronald Reagan. It also has the not-so-bright record of Richard Nixon, the only US president who was forced to resign.&nbsp;

The slow move of the party towards conservative and right-wing politics and economic policies was cemented by Reagan, and his Republican successors George HW Bush, his son George W Bush and then, Donald Trump.

At various times, the Republicans controlled Congress and the US legislature. They had the majority in the House of Representatives in 1947-49 and 2011-2019. In the Senate, they were in the majority in the 1980s and early 2000s, wresting majority again in the 2015-2021 period.

When compared to the anti-slavery idealism of its founders which was progressive for its time, the current politics of the Republicans is almost unbelievable.&nbsp;

The party currently advocates free-market policies and limited government intervention in people's lives, particularly in taxation.

While it endorses individual freedom away from government authority, the party is also conservative in its fiscal and social policies.&nbsp;

Amplified by Trump, who has changed the composition of the Republican party in the past eight years with his relatives or allies in key positions, the Republicans have a relatively hardline approach towards immigration and race relations, appearing to favour the white majority.

Trump is an ardent opponent of immigration, particularly from Latin American and Muslim nations.&nbsp;

His party is also opposed to taxing the rich, and government intervention in healthcare and medical insurance.

On the issue of abortion, the current Republicans prefer the right to life to the right of choice.

Republican presidents like George Bush and George W Bush have led the meddling of the US in global issues, including W's move to export democracy that led to civil wars, conflicts and the rise of Islamic terrorism in West Asia, and at least partially caused the 9/11 attacks of 2001.&nbsp;

Under Trump, the Republican Party seemed to favour American isolationism, with his key slogan being Make America Great Again.

Will Trump lead the Grand Old Party back into power and shape the legislative and policy landscape of the US?

This comes as Primo de Rivera was to be re-buried in a simple grave after&nbsp;Spain recently passed a new law to deal with its authoritarian past. The body was exhumed from a mausoleum near Madrid and follows the &nbsp;2019 removal of the remains of dictator Francisco Franco.&nbsp;

The exhumation of Primo de Rivera’s body came six months after Spain passed its so-called democratic memory law which aimed to tackle the country’s legacy of the 1936-39 civil war and the decades of dictatorship that followed.&nbsp;

After the civil war, during his regime, Franco built a vast hillside mausoleum, where Primo de Rivera’s remains lay for over six decades after his execution by a firing squad in November 1936 for conspiring against the elected Republican government. In 1956, his remains were buried under the altar of the basilica in Valley of the Fallen.&nbsp;

When Franco died, in 1975, he was also buried there. However, under the newly passed law in Spain, no figure linked to the 1936 military coup which triggered the civil war should have a grave in “a prominent public place” as it could encourage acts of homage or exultation, as per AFP. Notably, it is the fourth time his remains have been exhumed.

Primo de Rivera’s family agreed to the exhumation and selected April 24 as the date because it marks 120 years since his birth. The complex built by Franco is also home to 34,000 people from both sides of the civil war, many of whom were also victims of Franco's regime, are also buried in unmarked graves in the mausoleum.

The complex was also reportedly, in part, built by 20,000 political prisoners. The basilica&nbsp;built on a mountain near the capital, topped by a 150-metre stone cross will be turned into a memorial to the 500,000 people killed during the Spanish&nbsp;civil war and is now called the Valley of Cuelgamuros. Notably, Primo de Rivera’s Falange party continues to exist but does not have any seats in the&nbsp;parliament.&nbsp;

Protests on Monday&nbsp;

According to reports nearly 200 sympathisers of Primo de Rivera gathered outside the San Isidro cemetery in southern Madrid, where he was taken to be reburied. Subsequently, police struggled to control the crowd which was chanting and making fascist salutes, as per media reports. 
 
This comes after the police had previously blocked access to the cemetery, however, Falange supporters gathered and also, as per reports,&nbsp;sang the Falangist hymn “Facing the sun”. Three people were arrested for public disorder, reported Reuters, citing a police source.&nbsp;

Law enforcement and residents of the District of Columbia were on high alert Saturday as far-right demonstrators were expected to gather at the foot of the Capitol to protest the jailing of Donald Trump supporters who stormed the building Jan. 6.

The Department of Defense put 100 National Guard troops on standby. The Capitol Police erected fencing around Capitol Hill. Even youth soccer games were canceled before the “Justice for J6” rally, the first significant gathering of right-wing demonstrators at the Capitol since a mob attacked the building in January as Congress was officially certifying President Joe Biden’s victory.

The rally is being organized by Matt Braynard, a former Trump campaign operative, and his organization, Look Ahead America. The organization has demanded that the Department of Justice drop charges against what the group calls “nonviolent protesters” facing charges stemming from the Jan. 6 riot. Organizers have secured a permit for 700 attendees, according to the document.

Braynard has told protesters to be peaceful, “respectful and kind” to the hundreds of police officers expected to meet them, and to refrain from bringing signs, flags or clothing promoting a candidate or objecting to the 2020 election.

“What we’re looking for is pure patriotism,” he said in a promotional video.

But the Department of Homeland Security has warned of potential violence.

“We are aware of a small number of recent online threats of violence referencing the planned rally, including online discussions encouraging violence the day before the rally,” the department’s intelligence officers wrote in a report obtained by The New York Times.

Officers are preparing for violence to erupt with “little-to-no warning,” although authorities have not identified any “specific or credible plot associated with the event,” according to the document.

It is not at all clear whether the event will attract a large crowd. But in a measure of the lasting effect of the Jan. 6 riot, Washington is bracing for trouble.

Dozens of officers in riot gear could be seen near the Capitol on Saturday morning, as well as officers on horseback. Law enforcement agencies in the region, including the Virginia State Police and the police department for Prince George’s County in Maryland, arrived with armored cars and other resources.

Soccer games and other outdoor activities for children in nearby parks were canceled. Taking time from a somber news conference in which the United States accepted culpability for an errant airstrike in Kabul, John Kirby, the Department of Defense's chief spokesperson, said the defense secretary had approved a request for a contingent of unarmed National Guard troops.

The rally is the latest effort to rewrite the history of the deadly mob attack on the Capitol, which sought to disrupt Congress’s count to formalize Biden’s victory in the 2020 election, and which prosecutors say led to as many as 1,000 assaults against police officers. Federal authorities have issued multiple intelligence reports this year warning that the attack on Jan. 6 may not have been an isolated episode and that domestic extremists have been emboldened by the mob attack and false narratives around the 2020 election.

Trump issued a statement from his office Thursday, making no mention of the rally but saying, “Our hearts and minds are with the people being persecuted so unfairly relating to the January 6th protest concerning the Rigged Presidential Election.” He added, “JUSTICE WILL PREVAIL!”

In addition to restoring the fence, the Capitol Police have installed new security camera technology to better monitor a wider range of activity around the complex and have streamlined their intelligence-sharing and planning processes after the January attack.
