India's electric two-wheeler industry shows significant export potential, particularly in markets where Indian manufacturers already have a presence with their conventional engine vehicles, according to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari.

Speaking at the launch event of Revolt Motors' new electric commuter motorcycle, Gadkari highlighted that 50 per cent of motorcycles produced in India are currently exported, with major players like Bajaj Auto, Hero MotoCorp, and TVS maintaining a strong international presence.

The minister encouraged Revolt Motors to explore opportunities in neighboring countries, as well as in African and Latin American markets. This suggestion aligns with the government's vision to establish India as a global hub for electric vehicle manufacturing and exports.

Responding to this call, Anjali Rattan, Co-Founder and Chairperson of Rattan India Enterprises revealed that the company has already formulated plans to begin exports to Sri Lanka. Revolt Motors is actively investigating export possibilities in Nepal, Africa, and Latin America, demonstrating the company's commitment to expanding its global footprint.

During the event, Revolt Motors unveiled its latest offering, the RV1 commuter bike. The electric motorcycle is being introduced with two variants, featuring different battery capacities and ranges. The base model, priced at INR 84,990, comes with a 2.2 kWh battery offering a range of 100 km. The higher-end variant, priced at INR 99,990, is equipped with a 3.24 kWh battery, providing an extended range of 160 km. These introductory prices aim to make electric mobility more accessible to Indian consumers.

In a separate interaction, Anjali Rattan shared Revolt Motors' ambitious plans for the future. The company intends to introduce one new product annually over the next five years, signaling a strong commitment to innovation and expanding its product portfolio in the rapidly growing electric two-wheeler market.

Revolt Motors is also focusing on strengthening its sales network across India. The company plans to expand from its current 125 outlets to an impressive 500 outlets within the next 12 to 18 months. This aggressive expansion strategy includes a near-term goal of reaching 250 dealerships by the end of the current fiscal year. This significant increase in retail presence is expected to boost the company's market reach and accessibility for potential customers.

In a scene replayed across the United States, angry parents and activists streamed into a meeting of the Florida's Lake County school board on Thursday where it considered whether to mandate mask-wearing for students and staff due to COVID.

Some opponents of the mask proposal brandished signs that read “Let Our Children Breathe.” Even with Florida seeing a record number of coronavirus cases, one attendee called the pandemic "overblown." Another was escorted out by deputies after yelling at board members.

The proposal would require staff and students to wear masks for 14 days at schools with COVID positivity rates at or above 5%.

But Florida's Republican governor, Ron DeSantis, effectively banned similar mandates in July.

Since DeSantis' order, more than a dozen Florida counties have rebelled and voted to require masks to protect students and teachers as the Delta variant sweeps across the state. This week, the state's Department of Education sanctioned two counties that passed school mask requirements.

The battle between DeSantis and the state's school systems echoes larger fights across the country.

Other Republican-run states such as Arizona and Texas have also banned mask mandates in schools even as COVID cases have soared in their states, as parents and voters are sharply divided over safety measures and personal freedoms.

The pushback in Florida against the Republican governor initially was led by large urban school districts run by Democrats. But this week saw more conservative counties that backed Republican Donald Trump in the 2020 presidential election also defying DeSantis and instituting their own mandates.

Earlier this week, populous Brevard County along Florida’s east coast, which went for Trump over President Joe Biden by more than 16 percentage points in November, narrowly voted to approve a 30-day school mask mandate.

A day later, Hernando County, which supported Trump over Biden by almost 30 points, also passed a mandate, but one that allows parents to opt out.

In Lake County near Orlando, which also strongly backed Trump, a school official said on Thursday that more than 1,000 students of the 36,000 in the district had tested positive for the virus.

The board listened to more than three hours of public comment on the mask proposal then postponed a decision. Some 280 people spoke or sent emails on the issue, and two-thirds of them supported the idea, the Orlando Sentinel reported.

Still, proponents of a mask mandate were booed and heckled by the crowd in attendance.

“This topic has completely polarized communities,” said Andrea Messina, president of the Florida School Boards Association.

'ABSOLUTE CRISIS'

While the conflict centers on whether state or local governments are best equipped to make decisions on health and safety, it also has become a political challenge for DeSantis, whose state has once again become a COVID-19 hotbed.

After being widely praised last year when cases declined and the state’s economy seemed revived, DeSantis has faced renewed criticism for his opposition to masks and employer vaccine mandates. Florida on Aug. 26 saw a single-day record number of new cases of the virus – almost 28,000 – since the pandemic began.

A spokesperson for DeSantis, Christina Pushaw, defended the ban on school mandates, saying the governor is "protecting the rights of families and children from all levels of government overreach."

At the Brevard County meeting on Monday, Misty Belford, the chair of the school board who a month earlier had opposed a mask mandate, switched her vote and gave proponents a 3-2 majority.

Belford changed her mind, she told Reuters, after watching the district’s caseload spike, including a 49% increase in student cases from one week to the next. One school was closed for two days after most of its students were quarantined.

“We are at an absolute crisis point," Belford said.

But board member Katye Campbell, who voted against the mandate, said she worries about negative effects on students from requiring masks, such as asthma flare-ups, suicidal ideation and panic attacks.

“There is nothing easy about this decision because our community is so divided,” Campbell said.

Belford said she was relying on a decision from a Florida court last week that declared the DeSantis rule illegal. DeSantis on Thursday appealed the ruling. Earlier this week, the Florida Board of Education said it would penalize two counties that voted for mask mandates without providing a parental opt-out, Alachua and Broward, by withholding funds from the districts for the board members’ salaries.

Leanetta McNealy, chair of the Alachua County school board, said her board voted for the mask mandate last month based on scientific evidence that it would help mitigate the spread of the highly contagious Delta variant.

“I’d rather have a decrease in my compensation than have a death under my watch,” she said.

WeWork co-founder Adam Neumann agreed on Tuesday to resign as the Chief Executive and to give up majority voting control, after SoftBank Group Corp and other shareholders turned on him over a plunge in the US office-sharing start-up's estimated valuation.

The decision came after WeWork's parent We Company postponed its initial public offering last week following a push-back from prospective stock market investors, not just over its widening losses, but also over Neumann's unusually firm grip on the company.

This was a blow for SoftBank, which was hoping for We Company's IPO to bolster its fortunes as it seeks to woo investors for its second $108 billion Vision Fund.

SoftBank invested in We Company at a $47 billion valuation in January. But investor scepticism led to it earlier this month considering a potential IPO valuation of as low as $10 billion, Reuters reported.

We Company had vowed to press ahead with an IPO by the end of the year. But there was little sign that IPO investor sentiment would change, threatening the value of the stakes held not just by outside investors, but by Neumann as well.

The size of Neumann's holding has not been disclosed.

What was the venture capital world's biggest upset then morphed into one of corporate America's most high-profile boardroom dramas. SoftBank managed to muster enough opposition to Neumann in a meeting of We Company's seven-member board on Tuesday to convince him to step down. Reuters had reported on Monday that Neumann had engaged in talks about changes to his role.

"In recent weeks, the scrutiny directed towards me has become a significant distraction, and I have decided that it is in the best interest of the company to step down as Chief Executive," Neumann said in a statement.

Artie Minson, currently the Chief Financial Officer of WeWork's parent We Company, and Sebastian Gunningham, the Vice-Chairman of the New York-based start-up, will become co-chief executives, the company said. Neumann will stay on the board as a Non-executive Chairman, the company added.

Minson, a former Chief Financial Officer at the Time Warner Cable who joined We Company in 2015, will oversee its finance, legal, human resources, real estate and public communications. Gunningham, a former executive at Amazon.com Inc, Apple Inc, and Oracle Corp who joined We Company last year, will take responsibility for product, design, development, sales, marketing, technology and regional teams.

We Company is considering slowing its expansion so it burns through less cash and would require less funding in the absence of an IPO in the nearing team, Reuters reported on Monday.

"While we anticipate difficult decisions ahead, each decision will be made with rigorous analysis, always bearing in mind the company’s long-term interests and health," Minson and Gunningham wrote in an internal company memo seen by Reuters.

Neumann also agreed to reduce the power of his voting shares, losing majority voting control, according to the sources. Each of his shares will now have the same voting rights as three We Company common shares, not the 10 common shares previously, the sources said.

Neumann's shares used to have the same voting power as 20 We Company common shares, before he agreed to reduce his grip slightly earlier this month in an unsuccessful attempt to make the IPO more attractive to investors.

We Company said on Tuesday it was now evaluating the "optimal timing" for an IPO.

Firm Grip

Neumann, whose net worth is pegged by Forbes at $2.2 billion, developed a cult following among many We Company employees, vowing to "elevate the world's consciousness" as he sought to establish WeWork as a brand that transcended office sharing.

While his investors were willing to entertain his eccentricities over the decade he led WeWork since its founding in 2010, his free-whiling ways and party-heavy lifestyle came into focus once he failed to get the company's IPO underway.

During the attempts to woo IPO investors this month, Neumann was criticized by corporate governance experts for arrangements that went beyond the typical practice of having majority voting control through special categories of shares.

These included giving his estate a major say in his replacement as CEO, and tying the voting power of shares to how much he donates to charitable causes.

Neumann had also entered several transactions with We Company, making the company a tenant in some of his properties and charging it rent. He has also secured a $500 million credit line from banks using company stock as collateral.

Late Concessions

Following criticism by potential investors, Neumann agreed to some concessions without relinquishing majority control. He agreed to give We Company any profit he receives from real estate deals he had reached with the New York-based firm.

These changes did little to address concerns about the business model for We Company, which rents workspace to clients under short-term contracts, even though it pays rent under long-term leases. This mix of long-term liabilities and short-term revenue raised questions among investors about how the company would weather an economic downturn.

Neumann, 40, is not the first founder of a major start-up to be forced to step down recently. Uber Technologies Inc co-founder Travis Kalanick resigned as the CEO of the ride-hailing start-up in 2017 after facing a rebellion from his board over a string of scandals, including allegations of enabling a chauvinistic and toxic work culture.

Uber replaced Kalanick with an outsider, former Expedia Group Inc CEO Dara Khosrowshahi, and completed its IPO last May.

An Angolan court today ordered the conditional release of 17 young activists, including a well-known rapper, three months after they were jailed for rebellion against President Jose Eduardo dos Santos.

Most of group were arrested during a book club meeting in June last year where one of the books on the line-up was about non-violent resistance to repressive regimes.

The activists maintained throughout their trial they were peaceful campaigners for the departure of dos Santos, who has been in power since September, 1979 and rules the oil-rich country with an iron fist.

"Release warrants under house arrest were issued on behalf of 17 applicants to be executed from the present day," the Supreme Court in Luanda said in a statement.

The ruling overturns sentences ranging from two to eight years in prison, which were handed down at the end of a lengthy trial in March amid complaints about political repression.

One of the accused, rapper Luaty Beirao, went on hunger strike for over a month last year to protest against his detention.

Defence lawyer Francisco Miguel Michel said today that he was "very happy".

"Any court concerned with the application of justice would have ruled the same," he said, insisting his clients "committed no crime".
Human Rights Watch researcher Zenaida Machado told AFP the ruling was "long overdue".
