Disney`s animated adventure 'Raya and the Last Dragon' led the domestic box office in its third weekend, illustrating the appeal of family films as Hollywood attempts to mount a moviegoing revival. 'Raya and the Last Dragon' collected $5.2 million from 2,261 theatres through Sunday, representing a scant 5% decline.

Disney can thank the reopening of Los Angeles movie theatres for the stellar hold in ticket sales. Cinemas in the City of Angels were given permission to resume operations on March 12, but most film exhibitors weren`t able to get up and running until now.

Capacity in Los Angeles area movie theaters will be capped at 25%, or 100 people per auditorium, which is double the limit in New York, where its restricted to 50 people. Even with restrictions, Los Angeles accounted for nearly 9% of all movie tickets sold this weekend, according to Comscore.
"This weekend showed solid results from holdovers, demonstrating the revenue-generating a horsepower of opening the biggest box-office market in North America," said Paul Dergarabedian, a senior media analyst with Comscore. "Eager movie fans in Los Angeles showed up in solid numbers to enjoy the big screen experience once again."

AMC Theatres, the cinema chain with the biggest footprint in the country, has reopened 98% of its locations, including 40 venues in California, as of March 19. The circuit expects to reopen even more locations by March 26.

"It was exactly one year ago that we closed all AMC locations in the United States," said Adam Aron, the CEO of AMC. "It gives me immense joy to say that by the end of next week we expect that 99% of our U.S. locations will have reopened."
"Raya and the Last Dragon" amassed another $8 million overseas from 29 countries. The film, which is available to Disney Plus subscribers for an additional $30, has generated $71 million globally to date
.
Without much in the way of competition, "Raya and the Last Dragon" was able to easily repeat No. 1 in North America. Two new movies -- "The Courier" and "City of Lies" -- opened theatrically while several awards season hopefuls got a post-Oscar nomination boost.
"The Courier," a Cold War drama led by Benedict Cumberbatch and Rachel Brosnahan, landed in third place with $2 million from 1,433 locations. Directed by Dominic Cooke, the movie premiered at last year`s Sundance Film Festival (with the title "Ironbark") to mostly positive reviews. Roadside Attractions and Lionsgate, the film`s backers, reported strong turnout in Salt Lake City, Orlando and Dallas.

Meanwhile, Johnny Depp`s "City of Lies," a crime drama about corruption in the LAPD, mostly fell flat. The poorly reviewed film cinched 11th place on box office charts, scraping together $275,049 from 501 screens.
Focus Feature`s dark comedy "Promising Young Woman," which landed five Academy Award nominations, enjoyed a 117% increase in ticket sales, with $195,000 over the three days for a total of $5.7 million. And A24`s "Minari," a heartwarming drama about a Korean American family that scored six Oscar nods, saw receipts climb 85%. The film earned $306,000 this weekend, bringing its tally to $1.3 million. Sony Pictures Classics` "The Father," the only best picture nominee to have a traditional theatrical release, made another $275,000 following nominations, lifting its total sales to $879,000.

"Raya and the Last Dragon" wasn`t the only title that witnessed a modest decline in ticket sales; none of the films in the top five dipped more than 15% from the weekend prior.Warner Bros.` live-action-animated hybrid "Tom and Jerry" remained in second place with $3.8 million from 2,508 screens, a 7% drop from last weekend. The film, which is also playing on HBO Max for 31 days, has made $33 million at the domestic box office. Internationally, "Tom and Jerry" added another $4 million, bringing its overseas tally to $43.5 million and global haul to $77.2. million.

At No. 3, Lionsgate`s sci-fi thriller "Chaos Walking" took in $1.9 million from 2,132 theaters, marking a slight 14% fall. After three weeks of release, the Daisy Ridley and Tom Holland-led film has made $9.69 million. Universal`s "The Croods: A New Age" rounded out the top five with $620,000 from 1,411 screens. The animated family film has made $55 million since it was released last November. Globally, "The Croods" sequel has made $160 million.

'Raya and the Last Dragon' leads box office as L.A. theater revival boosts ticket sales

Disney's "Raya and the Last Dragon" topped the U.S. box office this weekend, earning an estimated $5,150,000 in 2,261 locations.

'Raya and the Last Dragon' leads US box office estimates

As New York opened its theatres welcoming enthusiastic movie watchers for the first time in nearly a year this weekend, Disney’s ‘Raya and the Last Dragon’ has proved to hit a new rank. The animated fantasy adventure opened to $8.6 million from more than 200 screens. It, however, failed to match the debut of ‘Tom & Jerry’ that released last weekend and earned $14 million.

Though lesser than what a film would have made in pre-COVID times, ‘Raya and the Last Dragon’ earned $26 million with China and Russia providing the largest contributions with $8.4 million and $2.8 million, respectively.

Lionsgate’s ‘Chaos Walking’ with Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley, grossed a $3.8 million for a third-place finish. The top five was rounded out by Focus Features’ ‘Boogie’ and Dreamworks Animation’s ‘The Croods: A New Age.’

With vaccinations increasing and rates of coronavirus dropping, several markets such as Chicago, Portland and New York have slowly reopened movie theaters in recent weeks. Many of these are operating at reduced capacity.

‘Raya and the Last Dragon’ drives a slow US box office with $8.6 million

Would you want to live in a world full of dragons who bring life and water to earth and are humans’ best friend? If the answer is no, then you’d change your mind once you watch Disney’s latest animated offering ‘Raya and the Last Dragon’.

A sweet watch that we recommend you kickstart your weekend with, Disney’s ‘Raya and the Last Dragon’ is about a fantasy land Kumandra that has five warring tribes after the dragons sacrifice their lives to rid the world of the plague, Druun. After 500 years of stability in Kumandra, when Druun return to wipe off everything that lives and breathes as they turn things to stone, Raya is the world’s only hope, a warrior girl who calls herself a dragon nerd.

Raya is voiced by ‘Star Wars’ fame Kelly Marie Tran.

While Raya is a courageous warrior who has her goal in sight, the film’s main protagonist (and hero, so to say) is Susu, the last dragon. She’s unlike any dragon you’ve seen or visualised. Sans breath of fire and reptile scales that send shivers down us mortals, Susu is a beautiful plush toy come-to-life dragon with iridescent blue fur with violet highlights and a unicorn horn. A remarkable sense of humour, almost sounding like an Asian-American comedian, courtesy the actress who voices Susu (Awkwafina), the dragon is a delight to watch on screen.

The Disney film also drives home the point of ‘strength in unity’ from the start to the end of the film without becoming a heavy weight on the screenplay. The film is political in undertones without being preachy. The concept of Druun, humans’ eternal enemy, is also brilliantly crafted.

'Raya and the Last Dragon' review: Disney's film is a reminder of why there's strength in unity

Walt Disney Co`s latest animated movie, 'Raya and the Last Dragon', aims to offer a fresh take on a princess tale in a fantasy world inspired by Southeast Asia and no prince coming to the rescue.

The film, which debuts on Friday, tells the story of Raya, a young princess voiced by 'Star Wars' actress Kelly Marie Tran, who is hardened by her past. Raya goes in search of the last dragon, Sisu (played by actress Awkwafina), to rid the world of a killer plague.

"Everyone from the beginning had a vision for this movie being definitely different from everything that we`ve historically thought of and seen when we think of the words `Disney princess`," Tran said in an interview with Reuters.

The movie will play in theatres and also be available for customers to the Disney+ streaming service to watch at home for a $30 charge on top of their monthly subscription fee.

The film focuses on the sisterhood between the lead characters rather than the romance typical of past Disney princess tales. It is set in the fictional world of Kumandra, where humans and dragons had once lived in harmony. The only thing that can reunite them is a fight against the virus-like enemy the Druun.

"Given the events of the last year, I do think this is the right film at the right time," director Don Hall said.

Critics have gushed over the film`s animation and storytelling. Ninety-six per cent of reviews collected on the Rotten Tomatoes website gave the movie a positive score.
Awkwafina said she hoped 'Raya and the Last Dragon' would be followed by more movies that feature Asian-American casts.

"As Asian-American performers, we just want there to be more because the landscape has changed so much from when we were kids," she said.
Now, "it`s opening up," she said.
