A new ransomware 'Bad Rabbit' has hit computers in Europe, misleading the affected machines into installing it as a software update.

More than half of the affected machines were in Russia, followed by Ukraine, Bulgaria, Turkey and Japan, according to ESET.

The“Bad Rabbit” malware encrypts data on infected machines before a payment of 0.05 bitcoin (£250) for the decryption key.

Organisations which were hit by this ransomware are Interfax and Odessa airport, Kiev’s metro system and Russian media organisation. Interfax deliberately had to post to its Facebook page during the breakdown, since its servers got affected for many hours.

The attacks were disturbing because the attackers quickly infected critical infrastructure, including transportation operators, indicating it was a “well-coordinated” campaign, said Robert Lipovsky, a researcher with cyber firm ESET.

According to the Bad Rabbit ransom screen, potential servers will be charged a higher amount in the near future.

Ransomware infections have the potential to halt activity at targeted organizations. The May “WannaCry” ransomware shuttered hospitals, factories and other facilities around the globe for days.

Russian cyber-security firm Kaspersky Lab said 'Bad Rabbit' appeared to spread through a mechanism similar to June’s destructive NotPetya virus, which took down many Ukrainian government agencies and businesses. It then spread across corporate networks of multinationals with operations or suppliers in eastern Europe.
