Madhya Pradesh scripted history as they defeated Mumbai in the final of the Ranji Trophy 2022 to clinch their maiden title at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Sunday (June 26). Madhya Pradesh were asked to chase a paltry 108 runs inside two sessions on the final fifth day of the summit clash and they managed to overhaul the target with ease to take down Mumbai and win their first-ever Ranji Trophy title.&nbsp;After crucial knocks from opener Himanshu Mantri (37) and Shubham Sharma (30), Rajat Patidar remained unbeaten on 30 off 37 balls to take Madhya Pardesh home in the crucial&nbsp;run-chase.

Madhya Pradesh enjoyed a dream run in the tournament under head coach Chandrakant Pandit, who has now won the Ranji Trophy with the likes of Mumbai, Vidarbha and Madhya Pradesh. The Aditya Shrivastava-led side was up against a dominant Mumbai team in the final but completely outplayed the domestic giants to win the elusive title.

Sarfaraz Khan continued his dream run with the bat for Mumbai in their first innings as he slammed a brilliant 134 -run-knock to help the Prithvi Shaw-led side post 374 runs on the board. However, Madhya Pradesh responded in style with as many as three batters notching up centuries apiece.

Opener Yash Dube, Shubham Sharma and the in-form Rajat Patidar slammed a ton each to propel Madhya Pradesh to a hefty total of 536 runs and gain a healthy lead in their first innings.&nbsp;Sarfaraz was once again the star for Mumbai in their second innings with a quickfire 45 off 48 balls while captain Shaw and Suved Parkar played crucial knocks of 44 and 51 runs respectively to help their team reach 269 runs.

In the end, Madhya Pradesh stood just 108 runs away from becoming the champions of India's premier domestic cricket competition and their batters didn't disappoint as they chased down the target on Day 5 with more than a session to spare.

Patidar, who had a brilliant campaign for Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL 2022 after joining the franchise as an injury replacement, continued his purple patch in the Ranji Trophy knockouts to finish as the highest run-getter for Madhya Pradesh with 658 runs from six matches. Kumar Kartikeya finished as the highest wicket-taker for the champions with 27 scalps from five games.

Sarfaraz, who enjoyed a dream run in the Ranji Trophy last season, continued his heroics once again this year as he piled on runs at an incredible consistency to once again finsih as the highest run-getter of the season. The Mumbai batter scored a whopping 982 runs in just 6 matches, including four centuries to stamp his authority in the domestic tournament.

It was an emotional moment for MP head coach Pandit after winning the title with his formet team. Pandit had missed out on leading MP to their maiden Ranji Trophy title as captain in the 1998-99 season 23 years back. Pandit said it was a blessing to come back an win the trophy as a coach at the same ground where he had missed out on the title as a captain.

"It is a great memory that I had left 23 years back (he lost the Ranji Trophy final as Madhya Pradesh&nbsp;captain in 1998-99) and it is a blessing that I come back here, and winning this trophy was fabulous. It is emotional because I missed out as captain on the same ground," said Pandit.

Gautam Gambhir on Sunday categorically rejected the <a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/yes-i-made-enemies-but-i-slept-in-peace-gautam-gambhir-182607">rumour&nbsp;that he was joining politics</a> but the former India opener indicated he was open to coaching at the big stage.

The 37-year-old World Cup winner walked into the sunset by scoring a memorable hundred in his farewell Ranji Trophy match against Andhra at the Feroz Shah Kotla.

"Not at all," Gambhir said when asked if he was contesting in the next general elections.

"There are rumours which I have heard as well, probably the reason is maybe I take up social issues as well... For me Twitter was always a platform which is very, very important and where I take up social issues.

"I am not that kind of a character where I am going to start joking on a platform like twitter as well. For me being a citizen of this country it is my right to take up social issues and that probably is the reason why people thing I am going to join politics but there is nothing of that sort." 
Gambhir last played for the country in 2016 against England in Rajkot.

"As I just mentioned I haven't even thought about it (politics) and it is a completely different field. 25 years I have not done anything else, so let's see what I am going to do."

Gambhir scored 4154 runs in Test cricket from 58 matches, 5238 runs in ODIs and 932 in T20Is.&nbsp;

He was also asked if he is keen on taking up coaching assignments in competitive cricket, and he sounded positive.

"One thing which excites me is action and I am sure action is not about sitting in those AC rooms doing commentary and stuff. I don't know if I am going to be as good a coach as I have been a player," Gambhir said.

"I will have to evaluate whether I can be successful as a coach. Let's see, if that comes around and if I feel that I have the energy, passion and if I have the commitment to do it, I will think about it."

He responded in the negative when asked if he will enter cricket administration at some point.

"I am too straightforward a person to be in administration, I don't think people will accept me anywhere," said Gambhir, who has distributed all his bats to his team-mates, leaving his "kit bag empty".

Gambhir said he is willing to help young players in Delhi cricket.

"I am still a government nominee, hopefully I can now try and contribute more now (since he is no longer a player). There won't be any conflict of interest involved, which is very important and there won't be any criticism as well because when I took this up there were a lot of criticism.

"The boys need a lot of good things in DDCA (Delhi District and Cricket Association) and hopefully I am able to put that word across the executive committee and get those things done from cricket point of view. Apart from that, my job is to get the best out of the boys."

Indian Cricketer Rajneesh Gurbani on Saturday stepped up for his team Vidarbha by taking a hat-trick to restrict Delhi to 295 in the first innings of the Ranji Trophy Final.&nbsp;

The medium-pacer bowled Vikas Sharma and Navdeep Saini of the last two deliveries of his 23rd over, before castling centurion Dhruv Shorey of the first ball of his 24th over.&nbsp;

With this hat-trick, Gurbani is only the second bowler after B Kalyanasundaram of Tamil Nadu to achieve this feat in a Ranji Trophy final.&nbsp;

The first hat-trick in a Ranji final came in 1972/73 in Chennai against Mumbai.&nbsp;

The best bit about Gurbani&#39;s achievement came from the fact that he suffered an ankle injury on Friday which made him leave&nbsp;the field in the middle of the over for 30 minutes.

But the bowler resumed his play on Saturday and ended the innings with 6 wickets for 59 runs.

This is not the first time when Gurbani has proved his calibre. In the semifinal also, Gurbani took a total of 12 wickets, including seven in the second innings to enforce the win against Karnataka.&nbsp;
