After examining him for over 30 hours since Saturday, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday afternoon allowed the senior IPS officer to return to Kolkata, the official told PTI.

On Wednesday, he had arrived at the CBI office around 9.30 am and he was let off around 12:30 pm, he said.

According to official sources, the<a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/cbi-to-question-kolkata-commissioner-rajeev-kumar-again-on-sunday-196258"> Kolkata Police chief </a>had written to the probe agency seeking a "break" as he is required to prepare a reply to the contempt petition filed by the CBI against him and two other senior officers in the Supreme Court.

Kumar left for Guwahati from where he is scheduled to fly to Kolkata.

Two other senior Kolkata Police officers who had been with Kumar since Saturday also left with him, sources said.

The CBI had also questioned former Trinamool Congress MP Kunal Ghosh separately and along with Kumar on Sunday and on Monday.

The ex-MP, who was arrested in 2013 in the Saradha scam and has been out on bail since 2016, was allowed to return to Kolkata on Monday.

Kumar had led the special investigation team (SIT) formed by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to probe the Saradha scam before the case was handed over to the CBI by the Supreme Court.

A two-judge bench comprising Chief Justice fo India(CJI) Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Sanjiv Khanna did not allow the application filed by some investors that despite the apex court's 2013 order directing the CBI to probe the chit fund scam, the investigation has not attained finality.

"We are not inclined to set up a monitoring committee to monitor the chit fund scam probe," the bench said.&nbsp;

Supreme Court not to monitor Saradha probe; rejects plea

Ghosh arrived at the CBI office here shortly after 10 am while Kumar reached an hour later, an official told PTI.

Kumar left the CBI premises shortly after 7 pm this evening.

Ghosh, who left the CBI premises 30 minutes after Kumar, told mediapersons, "I have been asked by CBI to attend this office related to the case. I have cooperated with the investigation and now I am going back to Kolkata".

According to a well-placed source in the central probe agency, Kumar remained "cool" during Monday's grilling session.

Kumar claimed he had played no active role in the Special Investigating Team (SIT) formed to probe the Saradha chit fund scam as most of the probe was conducted "at the police station-level".

Kumar in course of questioning claimed that most of the probe was supervised by Arnab Ghosh, the then deputy commissioner of police of the detective department (DD) of the Bidhannagar City Police when the SIT started conducting the investigations into the scam, he said.

Kumar had led the SIT formed by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to probe the Saradha scam before the case was handed over to the CBI by the Supreme Court.

"Just like yesterday both (Kunal) Ghosh and Rajeev Kumar were grilled together. There were some confrontations between them during face to face encounter but both remained cool", the CBI sleuth said.

At one point, Kumar asked to stop the recordings of the joint statement and conduct a narco test on Ghosh, the CBI sleuth added.

Ghosh, the CBI officer said, was ready for the test but demanded the same to be done on Kumar also.

The source claimed that Kumar said if he had got a bit more time, the investigation into the case could have been completed.

On Sunday, the probe agency questioned Kumar separately and also along with Ghosh. The marathon questioning of the two lasted over eight hours.

Ghosh was arrested in 2013 in the Saradha ponzi scam and has been out on bail since 2016. 
The CBI is questioning the two in accordance with directions of the Supreme Court.

The Kolkata Police chief was quizzed for nearly nine hours on Saturday by three senior CBI officers about his alleged role in tampering of crucial evidence in the Saradha case, they said.

Bengal Chief Minister had immediately reached Kumar’s residence and announced that she will stage a ‘Satyagraha’ on the metro channel.&nbsp;

The ‘Satyagraha’ was staged for almost 40 hours before she finally decided to call it off after Supreme Court had passed its orders preventing the CBI from arresting Kumar.

Chit fund scams: Kolkata police chief grilled for 11 hours in second round of questioning

The Central Bureau of Investigation began questioning Kolkata Police chief Rajeev Kumar again on Sunday.&nbsp;

Kumar's counsel Biswajit Deb, who is also the TMC coordinator for Meghalaya, said Kumar is "cooperating and complying" with the CBI.

"He (Kumar) has come here on the orders of the Supreme Court. He has complied earlier and he is complying now as per the orders," he told reporters outside the CBI office.&nbsp;

The CBI is relying on a 91-page letter from Ghosh, who was expelled by TMC, to the Enforcement Directorate, detailing the role of Kumar in handling the ponzi scam probe after the main accused, Sudipta Sen and Debjani Mukherjee, both promoters of Saradha Group of companies, had fled to Kashmir, officials said in Kolkata.

Sen and Mukherjee were arrested in 2013 from Kashmir.

Ghosh had implicated BJP leader Mukul Roy, who was once the right-hand man of Banerjee and 12 others in the Saradha scam.

The Supreme Court had directed Kumar on Tuesday to appear before the CBI and "faithfully" cooperate in the investigation of cases arising out of the Saradha chit fund scam.

The apex court had also directed Kumar to appear before the investigating agency at a neutral place in Shillong "to avoid all unnecessary controversy" and made clear that he would not be arrested.

The CBI had moved the Supreme Court after its officials were thwarted by Kolkata Police when they had gone to Kumar's official residence in Kolkata to question him on February 3.&nbsp;

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had rushed to the spot and had staged a three-day "Save the Constitution"&nbsp;dharna against the CBI move.

The central investigating agency had said that its officials had wanted to question Kumar to plug the holes in the Saradha investigation case as he was supposed to be in possession of certain key documents as a member of the special investigation team.&nbsp;

Kumar's counsel and the two IPS officers were asked to leave the CBI office within 30 minutes, they said.

Kumar is being interrogated at the highly secured CBI office at Oakland area in the Meghalaya capital where three senior CBI sleuths from Delhi reached on Friday.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday had directed the Kolkata Police chief to appear before the CBI and "faithfully" cooperate in the investigation of cases arising out of the Saradha chit fund scam while making it clear that he will not be arrested.

The CBI had alleged in the Supreme Court that Kumar, who was leading the SIT probe into Saradha chit fund scam, tampered with the electronic evidence and handed over documents to the agency, some of which were "doctored".

The apex court directed him to appear before the investigating agency at a neutral place in Shillong "to avoid all unnecessary controversy".

CBI officials had gone to Kumar's residence in Kolkata to question him on January 3 but their attempt was thwarted by the police, following which, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee staged a three-day dharna.&nbsp;

The CBI is relying on a 91-page letter from Ghosh, who was expelled by TMC, to the Enforcement Directorate, detailing the role of Kumar in handling the ponzi scam probe after the main accused Sudipta Sen and Debjani Mukherjee, both promoters of Saradha group of companies, had fled to Kashmir, officials said in Kolkata.

Sen and Mukherjee were arrested in 2013 from Kashmir.

"State police was first to enter the premises of Saradha Group post-collapse and there are allegations that important documents which could have provided important leads were removed to cause the disappearance of evidence," a senior CBI official had said on the condition of anonymity.

The agency may confront Ghosh and Kumar to cross-check their claims, CBI sources said.

"I got a telephone from the CBI asking me to be in Shillong on Sunday. I will be there and cooperate in every possible manner," Ghosh told PTI.

Kumar's questioning on February 9 will happen in the shadow of the raid on Sunday evening on his Kolkata residence by CBI officials.

The officials had to beat a hasty retreat from Kumar's residence after its officials were not only prevented by guards from entering the premises but were also detained by Kolkata police.

The incident had triggered an unprecedented tussle between the West Bengal government and the Centre as Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee sat on a sit-in against the CBI move. On Monday, the agency rushed to the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court Tuesday directed Kumar to appear before the CBI and "faithfully" cooperate into the investigation but made it clear clear that he should not be arrested.

The court said "to avoid all unnecessary controversy", it was directing Kumar to appear before the agency at a neutral place in Shillong, Meghalaya.

The CBI has temporarily attached 10 more officers with its Kolkata unit, which is probing the scam, to augment strength during questioning of high-profile persons, including Kumar, officials said.

Officers from Delhi, Bhopal and Lucknow units have been sent to Kolkata and they will remain stationed there till February 20.

A team led by Superintendent of Police Jagroop S Gusinha from CBI's special unit in New Delhi will camp in Kolkata, an official order said.&nbsp;

The face-off continues to blow up into a constitutional crisis, with BJP national general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya saying "democracy has ended in West Bengal".

He added that "CBI was investigating on orders of Supreme Court but they didn't allow them. CBI officers were detained, this is the first time something like this has happened since independence; we condemn this."

Mamata Banerjee meanwhile came down heavily on the side of Kumar.&nbsp;

"I still say Rajeev Kumar (Kolkata Police Commissioner) is the best in the world," she said.&nbsp;

"I will stand with my force. I respect them. I felt very sad today. This is the destruction of the federal structure," she added.&nbsp;

Banerjee added that the CBI had shown up at Kumar's home without notice. That the Kolkata Police could have arrested them, but that they did not do so.&nbsp;
