<p>Union Home Minister Amit Shah, whose home state is Gujarat, condoled the deaths&nbsp;in a post on X and said the local administration was engaged in relief work.</p>

<p>“I am deeply saddened by the news of the death of many people due to bad weather and lightning in various cities of Gujarat. I express my deepest condolences for the irreparable loss to those who lost their loved ones in this tragedy. The local administration is engaged in relief work, praying for the speedy recovery of the injured.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>Gujarat’s agricultural minister Raghavji Patel on Monday (Nov 27) said that they are assessing the damage caused by unseasonal rains and added that&nbsp;compensation would be provided once the survey to assess the damage to crops is out.</p>

<h2><strong>More rainfall expected&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel is currently on an official visit to Japan with a high-level delegation to attract foreign investment in the state.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast rainfall to continue in parts of the state on Monday.</p>

<p>IMD’s Ahmedabad unit chief Manorama Mohanty told BBC that the collision of three weather systems over Gujarat caused the lightning strikes.</p>

<p>"These are the easterly winds flowing from the Arabian Sea, the Western Disturbance over the Western Himalayas and the Cyclonic Circulation over South Gujarat," Mohanty told BBC Gujarati.</p>

<p>They said that it was unlikely that the rain would stop until Sunday night. The Burning Man festival was scheduled to conclude on Monday.</p>

<p>Due to heavy rains, the "playa," or the huge open-air esplanade where the festival unfolds was inaccessible.</p>

<p>The organisers said on the website that only four-wheel drive vehicles which had all-terrain tires were able to move.</p>

<p>"Anything less than that will get stuck. It will hamper Exodus if we have cars stuck on roads in our camping areas, or on the Gate Road out of the city," they said on a "2023 Wet Playa Survival Guide" page.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Organisers said that if necessary, it was possible to walk five miles (eight kilometres) through the mud to reach the nearest road where they would provide buses during daylight hours for people to go to Reno.</p>

Heavy rains make 'Burning Man' site muddy, police investigate one death

<p>A segment of the Kalka-Shimla railway track, situated between Joyogh and Summer Hill railway station&nbsp;in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, was left suspended in mid-air due to a landslide, induced by heavy rains.&nbsp;The soil beneath the track was eroded away by the force of the landslide, causing disruption and raising safety concerns.</p>

<p>Consequently, train services between Kandaghat and Shimla have been cancelled, with the state government&nbsp;informing the public of the situation.</p>

Landslides and floods in Nepal kill 38 so far, 33 missing

Chandrashekhar Rao.</p>

<p>This announcement was made by the directorate of school education in Telangana and Hyderabad. The instructions stated, “Immediate orders are to be issued in this regard.”</p>

<p>The Telangana government has also put the entire state administration on high alert. Chief Secretary Santhi Kumari said the flood situation in the state is being constantly monitored by senior officials along with district collectors and superintendents of police.</p>

<p>Since July 22, eight people reportedly lost their lives in various rain-related incidents. Telangana has been witnessing incessant rainfall over the last few days, disrupting life in several places.</p>

<p>Telangana has recorded the highest-ever rainfall in a single day with Mulugu district recording 649.8 mm by 8:00 am on Thursday. According to Telangana State Department Planning Society (TSDPS) records, this is the highest rainfall in the history of the state. The earlier record was 517.5 mm at Wajedu in the same district of Mulugu on 2 July 2014.&nbsp;</p>

India weather: Telangana schools, colleges shut due to heavy rains; state on high alert

<p>Indian rescuers in the state of Maharashtra’s Raigad district, where a massive landslide led to the death of at least 27 people, called off the search and rescue efforts, on Sunday (July 23). This comes as nearly 60 people are still missing, said the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) official.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>About the landslide</strong></h2>

<p>The landslide occurred in Raigad district’s Irshalwadi village on July 19 amid torrential rains in the region at around 11:00 pm (local time). The village is situated on a hill slope under Khalapur tehsil which is located around 80 kilometres from the Indian financial capital city of &nbsp;Mumbai.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Irshalwadi village is said to be home to at least 225 people out of which, more than 80&nbsp;managed to escape.</p>

<h2><strong>Search and rescue operations called off</strong></h2>

<p>At least 228 people have been affected by the landslide, according to state minister Uday Samant.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Addressing a press conference, Samant, who is also the guardian minister of Raigad, said that the decision to call off the search and rescue operations was taken after consulting the district administration and other concerned authorities, as well as local residents.</p>

<p>According to officials, 27 bodies have been recovered from the debris by the NDRF and other social organisations who were engaged in relief and rescue work for four days now. However, nobody was found from the debris on Sunday, reported the Indian media citing officials.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Additionally, the bodies of 12 men, 10 women and four children are yet to be identified, according to the officials. They added that nine members of a family had perished in the disaster.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The landslide also caused around 17 of the 48 houses in the village, which is at least an hour away from a motorable road, to be fully or partially buried due to the debris, as per media reports.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meanwhile, Indian minister Samant has said that those affected will be given houses by the City and Industrial Development Corporation. He added that in a bid to avoid future tragedies, five villages will be rehabilitated and a total of 20 villages will be surveyed.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Maharashtra CM to ‘adopt’ children</strong></h2>

<p>Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde will “adopt” the 22 children who have lost their parents due to the Irshalwadi landslide, said the state’s legislative council deputy chairperson Neelam Gorhe, on Saturday.&nbsp;</p>

These children are in the age group of 2 to 15 years,” said Dr Shinde, in a statement on Twitter.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He added, “Taking this into consideration, Dr Shrikant Shinde Foundation has decided to support all the children who have been orphaned in the Irshalwadi landslide.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>In India's Himachal Pradesh, the recent flooding and heavy rains have resulted in a death toll of 91 people. Additionally, as many as 14 individuals are reported missing, and the northern state has suffered losses amounting to approximately Rs 4,000 crore ($487 million), said its education minister Rohit Thakur on Thursday (July 13).</p>

<p>The state emergency operation centre reported that as of Wednesday night, the death toll stands at 88. As per an official of the emergency operation centre, a total of 1,020 roads remain blocked, and transportation services, including bus services, have been severely disrupted.</p>

<p>"A total of 1,020 roads were still blocked in the state, while 2,498 transformers and 1,244 water supply schemes have been disrupted," said the official on Thursday, as reported by news agency PTI.</p>

<h2><strong>Monsoons in Himachal Pradesh</strong></h2>

<p>Since the onset of the monsoon on June 24, the Indian hill state of Himachal Pradesh has been severely affected by heavy rains, which triggered landslides and flash floods, leading to road blockages and damage to properties.</p>

<p>As of July 12, according to the emergency centre, the state has incurred a total loss of Rs 1,312 crore, and further estimates of losses are being reported.</p>

<h2><strong>Evacuation efforts</strong></h2>

<p>As per the PTI report, rescue workers have successfully evacuated 256 tourists who were stranded at Chandertal in the Lahaul and Spiti district for five days due to heavy snowfall blocking the roads.</p>

<p>This comes as authorities work towards shifting a total of 60,000 tourists to safer areas in the state over the past four days.</p>

<p>However, around 10,000 tourists stuck in places like Kasol, Kheerganga, and adjoining areas are refusing to trek to safety as they do not want to leave their vehicles behind.</p>

<p>To facilitate the evacuation, expert drivers were arranged to drive the tourist vehicles in the snowbound area. Food and medical supplies have been provided to the stranded tourists at Losar before taking them to Kaza, and the rescue operation is being supervised by the Lahaul and Spiti Deputy Commissioner.</p>

<p>Chandertal Lake, located in the Spiti valley, is a popular tourist destination where visitors often stay in camps. The evacuation from Chandertal has been described as a challenging task by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, who conducted an aerial survey of the affected areas. The Chief Minister has appointed Revenue Minister Jagat Singh Negi, who is familiar with the harsh topography of the region, to assist in the rescue efforts.</p>

An IMD official confirmed that this is the highest rainfall recorded since the 169.9 mm within 24 hours on July 25, 1982.</p>

<p>The IMD had previously forecasted high-intensity rain for 2-3 days in Delhi. As a result of the downpour, arterial roads, parks, underpasses, markets, schools, and hospitals faced severe inundation, causing havoc throughout the city.</p>

<p>Reports indicate that Delhi has witnessed the highest rainfall in the past 40 years. Tragically, a 58-year-old woman lost her life when a wall collapsed on her in Tibbia College Society in Delhi's Karol Bagh area due to the heavy rain.</p>

<p>The Deputy Commissioner of Gurugram, Nishant Kumar Yadav, issued an advisory on Sunday urging private institutions and corporate offices to implement Work From Home (WFH) arrangements for their employees on Monday, in response to the continuous rainfall. The objective behind this advisory was to mitigate traffic congestion on the roads, reported PTI.</p>

<p>“This will also help the civic agencies to take up dewatering and repair works expeditiously. We also advised the resident not to step outside unnecessarily due to rain,” Yadav told PTI.</p>

<p>According to data provided by the district administration, Gurugram City experienced heavy rainfall, measuring 150 mm, between 6:00 am and 11:00 pm on Sunday. As a result, severe waterlogging occurred on the Delhi-Jaipur Expressway as well as various parts of the city.</p>

Delhi schools to stay shut on Monday amid heavy rains, says CM Arvind Kejriwal

<p>Delhi-NCR witnessed a downpour of heavy rain overnight on Friday and throughout Saturday, resulting in a drop in temperatures. While the rain brought some respite from the heat, it caused significant inconvenience to commuters.</p>

<p>Several areas in the city were flooded, with water entering shops and houses. Waterlogging and long traffic jams plagued many parts of Delhi, leading to a challenging day for residents, reported PTI.&nbsp;</p>

The accident took place near New Delhi railway station's exit number one, said police in a statement, adding that the woman was lying unconscious when they reached the spot.<br />

"Immediately, they, along with injured Sakshi Ahuja's sister, Madhvi Chopra, took her to LHMC (Lady Hardinge Medical College) hospital where the doctor declared her brought dead," the police stated.</p>

<p lang="en-US">Madhvi Chopra, sister of the victim, then registered a complaint alleging that the concerned authorities have been negligent. A&nbsp;case was filed on the basis of the complaint, the police added.<br />

Sakshi Ahuja's father Lokesh Kumar Chopra also slammed the concerned authorities for negligence. "I was in the parking area when I received the information that my daughter Sakshi Ahuja has died due to electrocution. This has happened due to the negligence of the concerned authority," he said while speaking to news agency ANI.</p>

<p>The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Wednesday (May 31)&nbsp;that Delhi this year witnessed its coolest&nbsp;May in 36 years, with copious rainfall lowering the average maximum temperature to 36.8 degree&nbsp;Celsius.&nbsp;According to Kuldeep Srivastava, the head of IMD's regional forecasting division, Delhi had an average high temperature of 36 degree&nbsp;Celsius in May 1987.</p>

<p>"The average maximum temperature of 36.8 degree&nbsp;Celsius in May this year is the lowest since then," he told PTI.</p>

<p>Only nine days in May had maximum temperatures exceeding 40 degree&nbsp;Celsius, with heatwave conditions impacting some portions of the national capital for two days.</p>

<p>"The Safdarjung Observatory, which is representative of Delhi, has not recorded any heat wave in the pre-monsoon season this year. This has happened for the first time since 2014," Srivastava said.</p>

<p>Last year, the weather station recorded 13 heatwave days during the pre-monsoon season, nine in April and four in May. During this time period, there was just one heatwave day in 2021, four in 2020, and one in 2019.</p>

<p>A heatwave is declared when the highest temperature at a station is at least 40 degree&nbsp;Celsius in the plains, 37 degrees in coastal areas, and 30 degrees in hilly areas, and the deviation from normal is at least 4.5 notches.</p>

<p>May, the warmest month in Delhi with a mean maximum temperature of 39.5 degree&nbsp;Celsius, received 111 mm of rain, 262 per cent higher than the long-term average of 30.7 mm.</p>

<p>According to IMD records, this is also the fourth-greatest monthly rainfall after 165 mm in 2008, 144.8 mm in 2021, and 129.3 mm in 2002.</p>

<p>"Usually, five to six western disturbances are recorded in the northern plains in April and May. This time, we saw 10 western disturbances, mostly strong ones," said Srivastava.</p>

<p>"This is unusual. However, we cannot link it to climate change in the absence of data. There is no definite trend," he said.</p>

<p>Delhi recorded 184.3 mm of rainfall this pre-monsoon season (March to May) which is 186 per cent more than normal rainfall, according to the IMD.</p>
