Typhoon Haikui, which initially made landfall in China's Fujian province on September 5, has since weakened to a tropical storm.&nbsp;

However, the storm's residual circulation continues to wreak havoc in southern China. The populous city of Shenzhen, as per a Reuters report, has experienced its heaviest rainfall since record-keeping began in 1952. Neighbouring Hong Kong also endured its worst storm in 140 years.

<h2>Alarm bells</h2>

Scientists have reportedly raised concerns about an increased risk of disasters, as typhoons hitting China continue to intensify and their paths grow more complex.

This threat, as per them, extends to coastal cities like Shenzhen, which regularly brave tropical cyclones and already have robust flood defence systems in place.

Shao Sun, a climatologist at the University of California, Irvine, explained, "Typhoons that move far inland affect regions historically less exposed to heavy rainfall and strong wind, often with lower disaster resilience, leading to more severe losses."&nbsp;

"In this case of Shenzhen, the disaster was mainly due to the slow westward movement of Haikui's residual circulation, which nearly stagnated in its spatial position from the afternoon of September&nbsp;7 to the early hours of September&nbsp;8, and a 'train effect'&nbsp;of heavy rainfall occurred, causing the event to exceed its expected intensity," he added.

"Train effect" refers to a cumulative effect where successive convective cloud systems pass over the area, causing a significant accumulation of rainfall and significantly increasing the risk of heavy or even extreme rainfall.

Typhoon Haikui batters China with seven days of heavy rainfall

Record rainfall and floods in Beijing have so far claimed the lives of 33 people, whereas 18 are still missing, the officials confirmed on Wednesday.

The Chinese capital has been hit by record rainfall in recent weeks, causing damage to the infrastructure, also ravaging farms and cities.

On Wednesday (9 Aug), officials said that the floods in Beijing had killed 33 people which was almost thrice the numbers shared by authorities last Tuesday.

"I would like to express my deep condolences to those who died in the line of duty and the unfortunate victims," Xia Linmao, Beijing's vice-mayor, told a press conference, according to state broadcaster CCTV.

Hebei province, which neighbours Beijing, had reported 15 deaths with 22 still missing.

Whereas, in northeastern Jilin, 14 people had lost their lives and one person was reported missing on Sunday.

Further north in Heilongjiang, state media reported dozens of rivers saw water levels rise above "warning markers" in recent days.

"I still feel scared when I recall the recent flooding," Zheng Xiaokang, a police officer from the province's Jiangxi village, told the state-run Xinhua News Agency.

"In the face of the persistent downpour and rising river water, the consequences would have been devastating had we not managed to timely evacuate the villagers," Zheng said.

<h2>Floods kill 7 in Sichuan province</h2>

Seven people lost their lives in flash floods in southwestern China on Wednesday.

As per reports, the victims who died were taking pictures when the torrent struck, were tourists visiting a popular site.&nbsp;

Last week, China released a statement saying that natural disasters had claimed the lives of at least 147 people, with several missing in the month of July after record rainfall hit the country's capital.

China's Ministry of Emergency Management said that 142 of the deaths or disappearances recorded in the month of July were caused by flooding or geological disasters. &nbsp;

<h2>China to ramp up restoration efforts</h2>

China will ramp up restoration efforts in the country's north and northeast regions which were severely impacted by storm Doksuri. As per state media reports, Beijing will reconstruct the houses that were destroyed due to the recent record flooding in order to make sure that the ones affected can go back to their homes by winter.

The floods, which ravaged farms and cities in the northern Hebei province and enclosing areas, led to more than 1.5 million evacuations.

China's Cabinet said authorities would accelerate the efforts to restore power and telecom connections destroyed by the floods, state broadcaster CCTV reported, citing a cabinet meeting chaired by Premier Li Qiang.

In Fujian province north of the basin, authorities warned that recent record-breaking rainfall would persist into next week, posing a high risk of natural disasters.

Two other districts on the outskirts of Beijing -- Pinggu and Fangshan -- have issued orange alerts for rainstorms. 
 
China has a four-tier weather warning system, with red representing the most severe, followed by orange, yellow and blue. 
 
The city is forecast to be hit by rainstorms over the next three days, said the Beijing emergency response center. In neighbouring Hebei province, cities of Shijiazhuang, Xingtai, Baoding and Langfang have also seen heavy rain. 
 
From Thursday to Friday, precipitation was 18.7 millimetres on average, with some places receiving over 100 millimetres. 
 
South China&#39;s Guangdong Province has also been hit by torrential rain since Thursday. Conghua District of the provincial capital of Guangzhou suffered waterlogging yesterday. 
 
The local meteorological center said 18 meteorological stations in the province had reported 100 to 250 millimetres of rainfall yesterday, state-run Xinhua news agency reported. Longchuan County in Heyuan City was hit by the heaviest downpour in 50 years. Over 4,600 people were relocated.
