A film festival scheduled to run from November 7 in Istanbul was pulled out at the last moment as a mark of protest over a ban on a Daniel Craig starrer film Queer by the local authorities. The Mubu Fest organized by streaming platform Mubi was scheduled to run the second edition of the film fest in Turkey after a successful inaugural run in 2023.

In a statement issued on its dedicated Turkish-language Instagram page for Mubi Turkey, the streaming platform said it was pulling the entire event in response to the ban. The announcement came just hours before it was set to open in Kadikoy, on the Asian side of Istanbul.

“Hours before the start of Mubi Fest Istanbul 2024, which took months to prepare and was sold out days ago, we regretted to learn that the screening of Queer, which was part of the festival program and which was also the opening film, has been banned,” read a post on the Instagram page of Mubi Turkey.

“The decision states that the movie is banned because it contains provocative content that would endanger the peace of the society and that the ban would be implemented for security reasons,” it added.

The statement further read, “We believe this ban is an intervention that restricts art and freedom of expression. Festivals are breathtaking spaces where art and cultural diversity are celebrated, bringing people together. This ban takes not just one movie away from the meaning and purpose of the entire festival".

About Queer

Set in 1950, Queer stars Daniel Craig as an American expat in Mexico, who spends his days almost entirely alone, except for a few interactions with members of the small American community. He has an encounter with an expat former soldier who makes him believe it might be finally possible to establish an intimate connection with somebody.

The film is directed by Luca Guadagnino and had its premiere earlier this year at the Venice Film Festival. Based on a short novel by William S Burroughs, which includes graphic sex scenes involving two men.
Local authorities reportedly had raised objections over the screening of the film and imposed a ban days ahead of the festival.

Film festival in Turkey cancelled over ban on screening of Daniel Craig's film Queer

Former James Bond actor Daniel Craig has undergone a major transformation. The actor looked almost unrecognizable as he walked the red carpet on Tuesday (Sep 3) at the ongoing Venice International Film Festival 2024. Arriving alongside his wife, Rachel Weisz, the 56-year-old rocked long brown tresses with striking silver strands - a drastic change from his slick, short hair look that the actor has sported for years now.

Craig walked the red carpet ahead of the premiere of his new film Queer.

On the red carpet ahead of the screening, a shaggy-haired Craig looked nothing like the tuxedo-wearing secret agent for whom he is associated, instead opting for a cream-coloured suit paired with aviator sunglasses.

For Queer's premiere, Craig was joined by the film's director, Luca Guadagnino and costars Drew Starkey, Jason Schwartzman, Lesley Manville and Omar Apollo.

While the actor was there for his new film, his new haircut led to a lot of chatter on social media.

Some fans gave a thumbs-up to the look while others missed his previous short hairdo.

Many were left stunned by his new loo. “He has hair?” asked one user while another said “Daniel’s hair,” with a bunch of emojis.

One X user quipped, “That's Paul McCartney,” while another compared his appearance to Frank Gallagher, William H. Macy's character in Shameless. Some explained that Craig grew out his hair for Knives 3. Meanwhile, a second user said, “ppl making fun of his hair in the qrts... get behind me daniel.”
About Queer

In his new film Queer, Daniel Craig sheds his suave 007 persona for the loneliness and anguish of a drug-addicted gay man, in a love story based on the William Burroughs novel.

Containing graphic sex scenes and emotional highs and lows, the love story between two men packs an "emotional thump", Craig said ahead of the movie's world premiere.

The film, directed by Italy's Luca Guadagnino, is one of 21 vying for the top Golden Lion prize at the prestigious festival, which will be awarded on September 7.

The film centres on Craig as William Lee, an ageing writer in 1940s Mexico City who spends his time drinking and picking up men before becoming infatuated with the much younger Eugene Allerton, played by Drew Starkey.
