Psychological violence most common form at workplace

According to a recent study, published in the journal Aging-US, feeling unhappy, lonely or depressed can make your age faster than smoking or even certain diseases. It indicates that our mental health has a major impact on our biological aging and to incorporate these aspects they have created an “aging clock”.

The study was led by Deep Longevity (a biotechnology company focused on transforming longevity) with researchers from Stanford University, and The Chinese University of Hong Kong has created what they called an “aging clock” based on the data collected from at least 11,914 Chinese adults. The data was first collected in 2015, as part of a study called, China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS).

According to the Guardian, Fedor Galkin, a co-author of the study and lead scientist at the Hong Kong startup Deep Longevity, said “Your body and soul are connected – this is our main message.” The study looks at 16 blood biomarkers which are then compared to the “chronological age” of the participants, which is the age based on a person’s date of birth, predicted by the model with their actual age. The results showed that there were at least 5.7 years over or under the participant’s true age.

A biomarker is a molecule found in blood or other fluid and tissues of the body which are associated with a certain process, the ones chosen for this study include cholesterol and glucose levels. Additionally, they also accounted for 7 biometrics, like blood pressure, body mass index and measures of lung function, and the biological sex of the participant said the report.

“We demonstrate that psychological factors, such as feeling unhappy or being lonely, add up to 1.65 years to one’s biological age,” the researchers stated. However, Galkin also said that the figure is an estimate given that the model does not see feelings such as hopelessness or fearfulness related but independent of each other, the Guardian reported.

But it is not just loneliness but other psychological factors like depression, hopelessness, poor sleep, unhappiness, and fearfulness that can trigger faster aging. Another interesting finding of the study was that being married can reduce biological age by 7 months, whereas smokers are predicted to be 15 months older than their non-smoking counterparts. Additionally, people in rural areas are predicted to be at least 5 months older than those living in urban areas.

However, it is not likely that isolation and loneliness are worse risk factors for a person’s health than smoking, said Andrew Steptoe, professor at University College London, during an interview with the Guardian, since the data is collected at one point in time, he added. Steptoe also went on to point out how the researchers did not follow up with the participants with psychological distress to show that they actually aged more rapidly. However, it will be important to test if these predictions are fulfilled by repeated testing over a number of years, he added.

United Nations' annual World Drug Report is here and it tells a story about cannabis that was pretty much expected. The legalisation of non-medical use of cannabis has significantly increased the regular use of the drug. Covid lockdowns too had a similar effect, with nothing else to do, people turned to the recreational use of cannabis. The drug has long been the world's most widely used drug and as per the report it is getting 'stronger' too. The tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content of cannabis available on the market is increasing, getting stronger reports Reuters. Vienna-based UNODC's report stated that "cannabis legalisation appears to have accelerated the upward trends in reported daily use of the drug."

In recent years various states in the US and elsewhere have legalised the non-medical use of cannabis. In 2012, the US states of Washington and Colorado started the trend. After the US, Uruguay legalised it in 2013, followed by Canada in 2018. While more countries have taken this step the UN report focused only on these three countries.

There had been "a pronounced increase in the reported frequent use of high-potency products among young adults," the research noted, however, the incidence of cannabis use among teenagers "has not changed much."

However, the percentage of people who suffer from psychological conditions and commit suicide with regular use of cannabis has increased.

According to the research, the most recent data available in 2020 showed that 284 million people, or 5.6 per cent of the world's population, had used a narcotic like heroin, cocaine, amphetamines, or ecstasy. 209 million of them smoked marijuana.

The COVID-19 pandemic's "lockdown" times triggered rises "in cannabis use... in 2020," the report claimed.

Legalisation of marijuana increases consumption and resulting psychological problems and suicides: UN report

The Delhi High Court has said it was "unfortunate" that India was still following British era recruitment process and selecting police personnel on basis of only physical strength and fitness, and advised devising of a procedure which would include criteria like emotional maturity and psychological tests.

"What we find in India is that the only screening done is with respect to the moral character and integrity, physical strength and (that the person is) free from medical disease. No evaluation pertaining to the emotional maturity, ability to remain calm in emotionally charged situations, ability to handle difficult situations and be responsive and the ability of initiative in work is conducted," a bench of justices Pradeep Nandrajog and Pratibha Rani said.

The bench said it was "unfortunate" that India was "not marching ahead in the comity of nations", where psychological tests are also conducted to ascertain suitability of a candidate commensurate to the nature of job they are being inducted to.

It advised the Centre to devise a selection procedure under which those who are desirous of joining police forces would be tested with regard to not only their integrity, physical strength and fitness but also with respect to their emotional maturity, ability to be calm in charged situations, ability to exercise initiative in their work, dependability and good judgement.

The observations came on a man's plea challenging the order withdrawing his appointment to post of constable in the CISF on the ground that he was an accused in a criminal case, even though he was acquitted by the trial court.

It noted there were "no rules to guide the authorities in Delhi Police as to in what cases despite acquittal, the person can be kept out of service or can be deprived of employment".

With regard to the criteria of criminal background of a candidate, the court said it would be a violation of the Constitutional right of a person if "trivial offences" by him would justify the government "shutting its eyes and denying employment".

It said it was "high time" that the executive made a policy for not treating summary or ordinary conviction as a bar to entry or retention in government service, including the police force.

Noting that his acquittal was "honourable" as it came after the prosecution led all its evidence, the high court set aside his rejection and directed that he be inducted into service as a Constable with Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).

It also said that "he would be entitled to all benefits of seniority and continuity into service with effect from the date the person immediately beneath the petitioner in the empanelled list was made to join".
