When to watch it?

As quoted by US-based NBC News, Jackie Faherty, who is an astronomer and senior research scientist at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, said, "I like to tell people that the nighttime sky is the original Netflix—it's what people used to do to entertain themselves."
Faherty suggested that people should pick a clear sky night and enjoy the planetary spectacle. The best time to observe the planets is after dusk on a clear night. The suggested time is around 8:30 pm (local time) in an area away from city lights and other sources of light pollution. The best time to view the planet parade will be before February 21.

A CNET report mentioned that you may be able to see Venus, Saturn, and Neptune on the horizon. However, it depends on where you are. All three planets will be below the horizon by 11:30 pm to midnight (local time). Jupiter, Uranus, and Mars will all be visible for a few more hours.
Faherty said that Mercury should be visible to the naked eye, but due to its closeness to the sun, it is difficult to view.
You should be able to see all six planets every night till around the last week of February. Mercury will then momentarily join the other planets in the sky for a few days, making it a planetary parade of seven planets other than Earth.
NASA said in its report that while such planetary parades "aren’t once-in-a-lifetime events, planetary parades afford an uncommon opportunity to look up and appreciate our place in our solar system, with diverse worlds arrayed across the sky before our very eyes".
It also mentioned the next alignments. In October 2028, five planets will be visible before sunrise. And in late February 2034, five planets will be visible after sunset (Venus and Mercury will be challenging to observe).

Do look up! Don't miss planet parade of Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune and Uranus

Six planets - Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, and Uranus - made an appearance together in a celestial spectacle that captured the attention of sky-gazers across the globe on Saturday night. Watch this report for more details!

Planetary Parade 2025: Rare spectacle features Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus & Neptune

This month, six planets in the solar system - Mars, Jupiter, Uranus, Venus, Neptune, and Saturn will appear in Earth's skies in a "parade of planets." Watch this report for more details!

Planetary parade to occur on january 21 and March 8, 2025

New Delhi
The year 2025 will be filled with some amazing celestial events that you would not want to miss if you love skygazing. From a spectacular planetary parade to a lunar eclipse, meteor showers and Supermoon, there is a lot to gear up for in the new year.

Seven-planet parade

First up in January would be a planetary parade. You could see Venus, Saturn, Jupiter and Mars all together in the night sky. They would remain visible till the end of February. Two other planets - Neptune and Uranus - would also be part of the alignment. However, these two would only be visible with a telescope.
To catch the planets, look up after sunset, at around 8:30 pm local time. Venus, Saturn and Neptune will remain on the horizon for only some time and will go down between 11:30 pm to midnight. Mars, Jupiter and Uranus would stay up all night and slowly start setting as dawn approaches. Mars would be the last to go down.

The planetary parade will turn even more wonderful later on as Mercury joins them. All seven planets will be up, although only a few of them will be visible at a time because Saturn, Mercury and Neptune will be too close to the Sun when it sets.
While the planets will remain in the sky for weeks, the best time to watch them is between January 21 and February 21. The most ideal time to watch them would be the week of January 29 during the new moon.

Moon to block Mars

A lunar occultation is on the cards on January 13 when our moon would block the light of Mars for about an hour. This is the day of the full moon which will occult the red planet. If you carefully stay tuned to the sky, you would see Mars just to the moon’s left which would vanish soon after. This is because the moon would block the light of Mars.
It is an extremely rare occultation and might not be visible everywhere. The timings would also vary depending on where you are located.

Total lunar eclipse

March would bring with it a total lunar eclipse on the night of 13-14. The Earth will come directly between the Sun and full moon, casting a shadow onto the lunar surface. It would start as a partial lunar eclipse at 1:09 ET, at which point you would see the curved shadow of the Earth blocking out the moonlight. It will reach totality from 2:26 am until 3:31 am, changing its colour to orange-ish.

Lyrid and Orionid meteor showers

Two meteor showers will be visible in 2025 - a Lyrid Meteor Shower and an Orionid Meteor Shower. On April 22-23, the Lyrids will put on a spectacular show of shooting stars originating from the constellation Lyra the Harp.
On Oct 21-22, the Orionid Meteor Shower would peak. Chances of watching the shooting stars would be higher since the moon would be nearly invisible.

Supermoon

And towards the close of 2025, a Supermoon awaits us on November 5.

A planetary parade is set to become visible in the night sky in January 2025. Six planets will come in line and will be visible together for weeks after that. A seventh member of the solar system will later join them, giving skygazers a New Year's treat.

Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune and Uranus can be seen together, shining in the sky in the first month of 2025. These six planets will start becoming visible in the days before Jan. 21, 2025. They will remain there for around four weeks afterwards.

Four of these planets - Mars, Venus, Jupiter and Saturn - are likely to be visible to the naked eye. However, you'll need a telescope to watch Uranus and Neptune.

The planets will be sitting in the best positions and will present a spectacular view for weeks, at least until the end of February.

Seven planets will be visible later

The exciting thing about this cosmic spectacle is that it will turn into a seven-planet parade for a few days. All the other seven planets of our solar system will be visible at the same time when Mercury also joins the party. However, it might be hard to catch all of them together since Saturn, Mercury and Neptune would be too close to the Sun when it sets.

Their visibility will decrease by the start of March as Mercury, Saturn and Neptune would have moved too close to the sun. Soon Venus will also become less and less visible. Jupiter, Mars and Uranus would be left there for the next few weeks.

Where will the planetary parade be visible?

The planetary parade is expected to be visible at almost all locations, not only in the US but also in Mexico, Canada and India since the spectacle will remain in the sky for weeks.

Get ready for a planetary parade featuring all 7 of the other planets

Recent media reports suggested that stargazers would witness a rare celestial event on Monday (June 3), with six planets appearing in alignment.

However, NASA has been quick to debunk these claims and provided a more accurate picture of what to expect in the night sky in June.

The initial reports claimed that Mercury, Mars, Neptune, Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus would take part in a "planet parade," a phenomenon where planets align on the same side of the sun.

NASA, in a note titled "Planet Parade," addressed these misconceptions. "Some online sources have shared excitement about a 'parade of planets' visible in the morning sky in early June (June 3 in particular)," NASA stated. "In reality, only two of the six planets supposedly on display (Saturn and Mars) will actually be visible."

NASA explained that during "early June, Jupiter and Mercury will be at or below the horizon during morning twilight and therefore not visible to the naked eye."

In addition to this, the space agency also said that Uranus and Neptune are too faint to be seen without a telescope.

"The closest thing to a planet parade will be June 29, when Saturn, the Moon, Mars, and Jupiter will line up across the morning sky. This arrangement persists into July, and we'll talk more about that lineup," NASA added.

Plenty of other celestial event

While the anticipated six-planet alignment won't occur, there are still plenty of exciting celestial events to look forward to in June.

Saturn and Mars will be visible in the early morning hours throughout the month, and they will be joined by Jupiter later in June.

On June 2, just before sunrise, Mars will be visible just beneath the crescent Moon, with Saturn nearby. The crescent Moon will sit beneath Mars in the morning twilight on June 3.

The new moon will occur on June 6, and the full moon on June 21.

By the final week of June, Jupiter will become visible low in the east before sunrise. "Look for the bright planet around 10 degrees above the horizon this final week of June, forming a line with Mars and Saturn that stretches toward the south," as per the space agency.

Such an alignment is often termed "a planetary parade" and was visible to people after sunset in the west. Clear skies and a good view of the horizon gave people the best chance to see the alignment of planets.

Last summer, Jupiter, Saturn, Mars, Venus and Mercury had come together in what was said to be a rare planetary conjunction. The best way to spot the planets in alignment on Monday was to travel away from the city's bright light to someplace with an unobstructed, clear view.

The planets needed to be spotted early in the evening because Jupiter and Mercury disappeared quickly over the horizon. People got some of the best views from Scotland's northern parts and its islands due to the clear skies.

Astronomer Royal for Scotland's Prof Catherine Heymans viewed the spectacle from Portobello beach in Edinburgh.

"Planet spotting on a crystal clear night along with so many other planetary parade enthusiasts was an absolute delight!" she said.

Royal Observatory Greenwich's astronomer Jake Foster said that such alignments of planets are very particular to the perspective we get from Earth.

"The planets aren't aligned right now, they are all spread out across the Solar System but just from our perspective, every once in a while they get close enough to each other in the sky that we're able to see quite a few at once," he added.

Anglesey, which is situated in north Wales, has some of Europe's darkest skies.

North Wales' dark skies officer Dani Robertson, speaking from Anglesey, said that evening was a visual treat even after a slight cloudy haze.

"I'm in my back garden and I can see a very nice little crescent Moon, to the top left and just above it I can see Mars, which has a lovely red glow, and a bit lower towards the horizon there's a really bright light and that's Venus. If it were clearer, I could see all of it, the only one you wouldn't be able to see is Uranus, you'd need a telescope,” she said.

Kielder Observatory's Dan Pye from Hexham, near Scotland's border, said that looking at the planets in alignment gave us a perspective about where are we placed in the solar system.

"Over the course of the night, the distance between these objects shifts as the moon goes around us, we move a little further around the sun, and the planets continue their journeys around the sun. I think witnessing this helps you realise that connection we have to the cosmic ballet we have with other objects in just our very local space theatre,” he said.
