Manchester City forward Phil Foden won the Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year award on Tuesday.

Foden played a key role in City winning an unprecedented fourth consecutive Premier League title last term.

The 24-year-old scored 19 times and delivered eight assists for Pep Guardiola's team as they pipped Arsenal to the title on the last day of the season.

"To win this award is something very special and it is one that I am very proud of and grateful for. To be recognised this way by your fellow professionals means everything and I would like to thank everyone who voted for me," Foden said.&nbsp;

"I also want to pay special thanks to Pep, the City coaches and all my teammates as they help me to try and get better every single day."

Foden has already set his sights on a fifth successive Premier League crown after City started their title defence with a 2-0 win at Chelsea on Sunday.

"Last season was another very special one for everyone at the Club but now all our focus is concentrated on trying to achieve more success this term," he said.

Foden also won the 2023-24 Premier League player of the season award and was named the Football Writers' Association footballer of the year.

City director of Football Txiki Begiristain added: "Everyone here is so thrilled to see Phil win this award. To have your fellow professionals recognise you in such a way is very special.

"Phil embodies everything we stand for at Manchester City. He is a supremely talented player but is someone who always strives to seek to improve.

"He is a very humble guy who is hugely popular throughout the Club. We are all very proud of him."

Foden's City team-mates Erling Haaland, who won the award last year, and Rodri, as well as Chelsea's Cole Palmer, Arsenal's Martin Odegaard and Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins were also on the Player of the Year shortlist.

Chelsea forward Palmer was named the men's PFA young player of the year.

Foden and Palmer's awards made it the&nbsp;first time that both the senior and young player trophies went to English players since 2009-10, when Wayne Rooney and James Milner took home the silverware.

England international Palmer was second only to Haaland in the Premier League scoring charts with 22 goals in a breakthrough campaign after leaving Guardiola's team to move to Stamford Bridge.

City enjoyed a clean-sweep of the main awards at the Manchester ceremony as Khadija Shaw was voted the women's Player of the Year.

Jamaican forward Shaw was the top scorer in the Women's Super League with 21 goals as City were edged out for the title on goal difference by Chelsea.

"I am both happy and proud to have received this award, to be recognised in such a way by my peers is a very special honour," Shaw said.

The Professional Footballers’ Association on Friday announced the nominations for the PFA Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year as Liverpool and Manchester City dominated the list with their presence.&nbsp;

Liverpool full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold is among the nominated players for the Player of the Year along with skipper Jordan Henderson, who won the Writers’ Player of the Year. Sadio Mane and Virgil Van Dijk.

The Liverpool quartet are joined by Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling and one of the top favourites for the award – Kevin De Bruyne. The Liverpool players have been rewarded nominations for the crucial role they played in club’s first title success in 30 years, finishing 18 points clear of second-place Man City.

In the Young Player of the Year nomination list, Alexander-Arnold once again finds himself along with Manchester United duo Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood. Chelsea pair Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount are there in the list along with Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka.

The winners will be announced on Tuesday.

Liverpool centre back Virgil van Dijk was named Player of the Year by England's Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) on Sunday, becoming the fourth player from the Netherlands to win the award.

The 27-year-old has transformed Liverpool's defence since joining from Southampton in January last year for a world record fee of 75 million pounds ($96.89 million) for a defender.

The Dutchman has helped the title-chasing Merseysiders keep 19 clean sheets in the Premier League and they have conceded the fewest goals in the top flight so far this season.

Liverpool are also in the Champions League semi-finals.

"I think it's the highest honour you can get as a player to get voted Player of the year by the players you play against every week. It's special. I'm very proud and honoured to win," Van Dijk told Sky Sports.

Arsenal's Dutch forward Vivianne Miedema, 22, claimed the women's Player of the Year award, having earlier on Sunday helped the London club secure their third Women's Super League title with her 22nd goal of the season.&nbsp;

Van Dijk topped a six-man shortlist, voted for by PFA members from the 92 Premier and Football League clubs, beating Manchester City's Raheem Sterling, Sergio Aguero and Bernardo Silva plus teammate Sadio Mane and Chelsea forward Eden Hazard.

The Dutch international is the second Liverpool player in a row to win the award after forward Mohamed Salah last year and joins compatriots Dennis Bergkamp, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Robin van Persie in claiming the honour.

Van Dijk is the first defender to win the award since Chelsea centre-back John Terry in 2005.

Manchester City's England forward Sterling won the men's young player award with the club's England forward Georgia Stanway taking the equivalent women's prize.

"Would I feel sad if Van Dijk doesn't win Player of the Year? For him yes, of course," he told reporters.

"He's had an outstanding season. Will he have deserved it? Of course. It was last season when (Manchester City's) Kevin De Bruyne and (Liverpool's) Mo Salah both played unbelievable seasons and Mo won it.

"We were happy about that and not because De Bruyne lost it, because he would have deserved it as well. I think it is the same again in this case."

Van Dijk is one of the six players in the running for the award alongside team mate Sadio Mane, Chelsea's Eden Hazard and Manchester City trio Raheem Sterling, Sergio Aguero and Bernardo Silva.

The winners voted for by the PFA members, will be announced on April 28.
