As violence escalates, India brings back personnel from its Kandahar consulate

Four Border Security Force (BSF) personnel lost their lives and three others sustained injuries in a ceasefire violation by Pakistan in Chambliyal sector of Samba in the wee hours of Wednesday morning.

Among the deceased were two BSF jawans, one Assistant Commandant and one Sub-Inspector, who were killed during the shelling while they were out and retaliating.

Earlier in May, the Director General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of India and Pakistan had spoken to each other on the issue of ceasefire violations and terrorist activities and agreed to fully implement the ceasefire understanding of 2003, to ensure that ceasefire will not be violated by both sides.

Both the DGMOs had reviewed the prevailing situation along the Line of Control and International Boundary in Jammu and Kashmir, according to an official statement.

In a tweet, Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police (DGP) SP Vaid expressed his condolence over the incident.

Jammu and Kashmir: 4 BSF personnel killed in ceasefire violation by Pakistan

A report by a DRDO laboratory has said that the food provided to the Border Security Force (BSF) personnel is full of macro and micronutrients.

97% BSF personnel have expressed "satisfaction" with the quantity and quality of meals provided to them on duty at the borders and elsewhere.

The study was conducted by the Defence Institute of Physiology and Allied Science (DIPAS) on a special commission by the Border Security Force, after a BSF jawan, last year posted a video on a social media site claiming bad food was being served to the personnel.

The study, commissioned last year, was conducted by collecting data of "food preference and satisfaction level" from eight frontiers of the force -- four each from the western and the eastern command -- and focussed group discussion at 37 unit mess' and cook houses, it said.

"The report has summarised that the data...collected from 6,526 participants under eight frontiers with different terrain and the geographical area indicated that 97 per cent personnel are satisfied with respect to quantity and quality of food," the BSF said in a statement.

"The study has recorded average energy expenditure to be 3,400-3,500 kilocalories per day, while energy intake was 3,450 &nbsp335 kilo calories per day (of a personnel)." The study found that the food served by the BSF to its jawans and officers was able to provide all macro and micro-nutrients as per recommended dietary allowance of the Indian Council of Medical Research.

The expert's team, the BSF said, conducted the study by following a random sampling technique including all ranks, job profile/duties from different battalions and border out posts (BOPs) of the force.

"The assessment of food and nutrient intake has been done by food analysis, body composition, haematological profile, biochemical variable analysis, clinical examination and handgrip test," the force said, quoting the report submitted to it recently.

The BSF had commissioned the study to determine nutrient requirements of its personnel and adequacy of their diet under deployment, along with the determination of their food satisfaction level.

PTI, earlier this week, had reported that the paramilitary force has decided to get such a study done from a Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) lab on the recommendation of a parliamentary panel that went into the subject of food quality and quantity issues highlighted by the jawan, constable Tej Bahadur Yadav, last year.

BSF Director General K K Sharma had told the news agency in an interview that an internal inquiry conducted by the force, in the wake of the allegations made by Yadav, had found that the quality and quantity of food being served was never an issue among its personnel.

DIPAS is mandated to provide nutritional advisory to the armed forces in terms of determining calorie nutrient requirements of soldiers deployed under different environment all over the country, and it also conducts periodical reviews of ration scales of nutritional adequacy of the troops.

The border guarding force is tasked to guard the two important and sensitive Indian borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh. It also renders a variety of internal security duties across the country including undertaking anti-Naxal operations.

The Pakistan High Commission here has lodged complaints of harassment with the external affairs ministry, which has assured them of an investigation, official sources said on Sunday and alleged that several Indian mission staffers in Islamabad have been severely &quot;harassed and intimidated&quot;.

&quot;Harassment is the new normal for Indian High Commission personnel in Islamabad. The High Commissioner&#39;s car was recently stopped by Pakistani agencies in the middle of a busy road to prevent him from attending an event,&quot; a source said.

Noting that the Pakistan high commission has brought to the MEA&quot;s notice some incidents of alleged harassment over the last few days, sources said there will no doubt be investigated.

&quot;India makes all efforts to provide a safe, secure and hospitable environment for diplomats to work in. Unfortunately, this cannot be said of Islamabad. The Indian High Commission in Pakistan has been facing tremendous harassment for long, particularly in the last year,&quot; the source said.

&quot;Aggressive surveillance, violation of physical space and tailing of officers in close and dangerous proximity is a perennial issue. Agency personnel keep shooting videos of the officers thrusting phones on their faces.&quot;

&quot;Obscene phone calls and messages are constantly received on phones. In view of such an atmosphere of intimidation, most families have returned to India and children have been withdrawn from schools,&quot; the source said.

In more trouble, over the last few months, several Indian High Commission staffers have been severely harassed and intimidated, the source said, adding that in one case an officer&#39;s home was broken into and a laptop stolen.

However, Indian diplomats chose to tackle this matter with quiet and persistent diplomacy rather than by airing issues in the media, the source said.

The strong reaction came after Pakistani newspaper Dawn quoted Pakistani officials of accusing India of harassing its diplomats and their families in the country and threatened to pull out the families if the intimidation did not stop.

A demarche was made to the Indian High Commission in Islamabad and the external affairs ministry in Delhi, a diplomatic source was quoted as saying by the Dawn.

However, sources here said India has repeatedly requested Pakistan to mutually ensure that High Commissions are allowed to do their job in an atmosphere free of harassment and intimidation, that staff be allowed to work and that construction projects get completed on time.

&quot;We would like to continue the fine tradition of allowing diplomats to do their jobs,&quot; the source said.

Sources also said that on February 16, the Indian High Commissioner met the Foreign Secretary of Pakistan to lodge a strong protest against multiple acts of hooliganism against Indian properties and personnel.

&quot;India&#39;s residential complex in Islamabad was raided by Pakistan agencies who expelled all Pakistani service providers and later disconnected power and water supply.
