Researchers from University of Texas Southwestern have described the results they got with an experimental drug named CNM-Au8 in a paper published in Journal of Nanobiotechnology.

Although more tests are required, this 'gold-dusted' drug has shown promise.

CNM-Au8 contains suspended nanoparticles of gold. The researchers have found that these nanoparticles can pass through blood-brain barrier and provide energy to neurons, thereby decreasing degeneration seen in diseases like Parkinson's or Multiple Sclerosis.

"We are cautiously optimistic that we will be able to prevent or even reverse some neurological disabilities with this strategy," says neurologist Peter Sguigna from the University of Texas Southwestern.

It was found that after taking the drug for 12 or more weeks, the value increase by 10.4 per cent on average. This is a promising figure.

"To our knowledge," say the researchers at UT Southwestern.&nbsp;

"CNM-Au8 is the only suspension of gold nanocrystals with both exceptionally high catalytic activity and very low toxicity that is being developed as a disease-modifying agent for neurodegenerative disease."

The team of researchers from UT Southwest have already carried out phase 2 clinical trials and are now making preparations for phase 3 clinical trials with fingers crossed that the drug indeed leads to some breakthrough.

A new technique has been developed by scientists that could help diagnose Parkinson’s disease at an early stage, even before symptoms start showing in a person, and speed up the process of treatment.

It is difficult to diagnose Parkinson’s presently because there is no specific test to detect the condition. Symptoms vary from person to person and similar symptoms have been found in other illnesses, which increases&nbsp;the possibility of a misdiagnosis.

Scientists in the United States have now claimed that they have come up with a way to identify how the abnormal proteins, which are related to the disease, buildup long before the symptoms begin to show. The Lancet Neurology journal published the findings of the scientists.

The research shows that the method, called alpha-synuclein seed amplification assay (alphaSyn-SAA), can identify people who stand at risk of developing Parkinson’s disease.

The method can create a scope for early detection, diagnosis and the right treatment of the disease. In the last 25 years, the prevalence of Parkinson’s has doubled globally with around 10 million people suffering from the disease.

There has been an increase in awareness of the disease after it was recently diagnosed in high-profile people like British television presenter Jeremy Paxman and US congresswoman Jennifer Wexton.

The study's co-lead author and University of Pennsylvania's Prof Andrew Siderowf said, “Identifying an effective biomarker for Parkinson’s disease pathology could have profound implications for the way we treat the condition, potentially making it possible to diagnose people earlier, identify the best treatments for different subsets of patients and speed up clinical trials.”

Parkinson’s is caused by the build-up of abnormal proteins throughout the nervous system and the brain. The buildup of proteins is said to start years before physical symptoms like the slowness of movement, muscle stiffness and tremors start to show.

The study included 1,123 participants, which was one of the largest assessments so far carried out, to study the usefulness of the alphaSyn-SAA technique.

The study confirmed that the people with Parkinson’s were accurately detected through the technique and also the individuals who were at risk but had no early symptoms were identified before diagnosis.

The researchers, however, cautioned that longer-term studies, taking into account larger sample sizes, would be required to fully understand the effectiveness of the alphaSyn-SAA technique.
