The mercury shattered all records in <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/north-central-india-reel-under-heatwave-monsoon-advances-in-kerala-225848">Delhi</a> with parts of the national capital recording an all-time high of 48 degrees Celsius Monday.

The city's previous high of 47.8 degrees Celsius was recorded in Palam on June 9, 2014.

"The Palam Observatory recorded an all-time high of 48 degrees Celsius Monday. The factors that led to this are dry westerly winds, no effect of a western disturbance in the plains and intense heating in the month of June," said India Meteorological Department regional weather forecasting chief Kuldeep Srivastava.&nbsp;

"Southwesterly winds on Tuesday may cause the temperature to drop by one or two notches. However, the heat wave will persist," he said.

The Safdarjung Observatory, which provides official figures for the city, recorded a high of 45.6 and a low of 27.2 degrees Celsius.

Hot dry winds- loo - swept the city, compounding the woes of people who had to venture out for work.&nbsp;

In large areas, a heatwave is declared when the mercury touches the 45-degree mark for two consecutive days and a severe heatwave is when the temperature soars to 47 degrees Celsius for two days on the trot, according to the India Meteorological Department.

In small areas, like the national capital, a heatwave is declared if the maximum temperature is recorded at 45 degrees Celsius even for a day, it said.&nbsp;

Delhi records all-time high of 48 degree Celsius

Heatwave conditions continued to prevail in most parts of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/heatwave-across-country-to-continue-for-next-two-days-subside-gradually-imd-223675">north and western&nbsp;India on Sunday</a> with India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting little respite in the days ahead.

On Sunday, the highest maximum temperature of 48.9° was recorded at Churu in Rajasthan. The mercury in Churu had crossed the 50-degree mark on Saturday. The desert city had recorded 50.8 degrees Celsius, nine notches above normal, according to the meteorological department office.

A farmer died in Rajasthan's at Necchwa in Sikar district on Sunday as a result of heatstroke. &nbsp;

India's national capital Delhi has been reeling under severe heatwave conditions with Palam observatory recording 46.1°C on Friday, as a result, the IMD had issued the highest "red-colour" warning for the city.&nbsp;

IMD said some parts of Vidarbha region of Maharashtra experienced a heatwave in the last 24 hours while there was rain in isolated places. Wardha in Vidarbha recorded the maximum temperature in the state at 45.5 degree Celsius on Sunday.

Solapur recorded a maximum temperature of 41 degree Celsius, Jalgaon 43, Aurangabad 40.7, Parbhani 43.6, Nanded 42.5, Akola 44.2, Amravati 44.8, Buldhana 44.2, Chandrapur 42.6, Nagpur 43.8, Yavatmal 42.5 and Gondia 40.4.

The IMD said heatwave conditions would prevail in Vidarbha over the next few days.

Meanwhile, Himachal Pradesh got some respite from the heat wave Sunday with light showers in some parts bringing down the maximum temperatures. Light rains were witnessed in some parts of the state from Saturday evening, including Dharamshala (15 mm), capital Shimla (5 mm), Bhuntar (0.4 mm) and Sundernagar (0.1 mm), the Met said.

Una recorded the highest temperature at 42.6 degrees Celsius, Shimla&nbsp;meteorological department&nbsp;informed.

Heatwave continues over north and western India; 1 dead

Safdarjung observatory recorded the highest temperature of the season on Tuesday as the mercury hit 44.0 degrees Celsius.

Beating the Monday's&nbsp;temperature Palam observatory also recorded 46 degree Celsius. Both Palam observatory and Safdarjung&nbsp;observatory's records are highest&nbsp;of the season.

Meanwhile, <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/imd-issues-heatwave-warning-in-delhi-for-next-five-days-138892">Indian Meteorological Department issued a warning of a heatwave </a>in Delhi along with four other states of the country for next five days.

The states that will be affected with the severe heatwave are Delhi, Haryana, Chandigarh, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.

According to the warning, the maximum temperature may shoot up to 48 degrees Celsius during those five days.

Delhi recorded the hottest day on Monday with the mercury touching 41 degrees, according to Safdarjung observatory. The minimum temperature of the day was recorded at 26 degrees in the morning.

As per the IMD statement, Uttar Pradesh may witness dust storms along with thunderstorm.

The issued warning of heatwave has put millions of residents of these states at the risk of illness caused by heat such as heat stroke and heat exhaustion.

People are advised to take precautionary measures to avoid such illness.
