The government has prohibited 156 fixed-dose combination drugs, including antibiotics for fevers and colds and multivitamins, declaring them potentially harmful to human health. This decision was announced on Thursday (Aug 22).

Fixed-dose combination (FDC) drugs are medicines that contain a combination of two or more active pharmaceutical ingredients in a fixed ratio, also known as "cocktail" drugs.

The Union health ministry issued a gazette notification prohibiting the manufacture, sale and distribution of these medicines under section 26 A of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act 1940.&nbsp;

The health ministry said, “The matter was examined by an expert committee appointed by the central government and the DTAB, with both bodies recommending that there is no therapeutic justification for the ingredients contained in the said FDCs.”

FDCs on the ban list

The ban list includes “Aceclofenac 50mg + Paracetamol 125mg tablet, Mefenamic Acid Paracetamol Injection, Cetirizine HCl Paracetamol Phenylephrine HCl, Levocetirizine Phenylephrine HCl Paracetamol, Paracetamol Chlorpheniramine Maleate Phenyl Propanolamine and Camylofin Dihydrochloride 25 mg Paracetamol 300mg.

The combination of Paracetamol, Tramadol, Taurine and Caffeine, an opioid-based painkiller is also banned by the government.

The notification said, "The Central government is satisfied that the use of the FDC drug is likely to involve risk to human beings whereas safer alternatives to the said drug are available."

“The government believes it is crucial and beneficial to public welfare to prohibit the production, sale, and distribution of these drugs within the country for human consumption,” stated the notification.

The list also includes certain products that many drug makers have already discontinued. In June 2023, 14 FDCs, which were part of those 344 drug combinations, were banned.

In 2016, the government announced the ban on the manufacture, sale, and distribution of 344 drug combinations after the recommendations of an expert panel was set up at the Supreme Court's behest.

You should strictly avoid addiction or drug dependence and reduce the amount as and when you notice a high acceptance rate. You can discuss with your doctor if you are still experiencing the pain and get an explanation of the effects of all the prescribed medicines."

Dr Vivek added, "You can get addicted to painkillers even if you have been taking the desired precautions. Join a detox program and get addiction treatment from your doctor, if you are finding it hard to stop taking painkillers. Also, very few people are aware of the various pain management alternatives available. They immediately buy over-the-counter painkillers from a pharmacy the moment they experience any pain, but it's really crucial to realise that you should first consult a pain management specialist if you experience persistent or severe pain."

A pain physician can walk you through your options, which may include oral medications, patches, nerve blocks, radiofrequency ablation, epidural injections, and other pain management techniques, the medical expert concluded.
