<p>Virgin Orbit reported an “anomaly” in its rocket on Tuesday that stopped it from reaching orbit, ending Britain's attempt to become the first European country to launch a satellite into space. "We appear to have an anomaly that has prevented us from reaching orbit. We are evaluating the information," Virgin Orbit said.</p>

<p>Virgin's LauncherOne rocket was carried under the wing of a customised Boeing 747 dubbed "Cosmic Girl" for the "horizontal launch" mission, which departed from the seaside town of Newquay in southwest England. The rocket was later released over the Atlantic Ocean, as per Reuters.</p>

<p>The aircraft engineering company made the "anomaly" public, 10 minutes before midnight. Less than an hour after the rocket was launched from Cosmic Girl, a 747 jumbo plane modified to unleash LauncherOne at 35,000 feet over the Atlantic Ocean.</p>

<p>This comes after the failure of a Vega-C rocket mission, which was built in Italy, in late December following lift-off from French Guiana.</p>

<p>In its maiden flight away from its American base, Virgin Orbit, a company owned in part by British billionaire Richard Branson, initially intended to launch nine satellites into lower Earth orbit (LEO). Since then, the rockets have been grounded.</p>

<p>In a now-deleted tweet, Virgin Orbit said that LauncherOne had reached earth orbit.</p>

<p>"Over the coming days there will be an investigation by the government and various bodies, including Virgin Orbit," Matt Archer, Commercial Space Director at the UK Space Agency wrote.</p>

<p>In the past year, Europe experienced a string of setbacks, including the delay of its crucial Ariane 6 launcher, access to Russian Soyuz rockets being restricted due to the conflict in Ukraine, the grounding of Vega, and now the cancellation of a showcase launch for the nascent small launcher industry.</p>

<p>It’s likely that an inquiry will be done to ascertain the cause and seriousness of the malfunction.</p>

<p>The "Cosmic Girl" had two people in the flight crew and two launch engineers on-board during the mission. After its failure, the company said the aircraft and its four-person crew were safe.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Monday's test flight was the first try for the company’s LauncherOne rocket to reach Earth orbit. Will Pomerantz, the vice president of Virgin Orbits said: "History is not terribly kind to maiden flights. Taking my best faith estimate, it’s about half of the maiden (rocket) flights fail. So that’s sort of the historical odds we’re against."</p>

<p>Virgin Orbit said that the rocket has &nbsp;"accomplished" all pre-flight milestones according to plan. They said: “As we said before the flight, our goals today were to work through the process of conducting a launch, learn as much as we could, and achieve ignition,” Virgin Orbit said. “We hoped we could have done more, but we accomplished those key objectives today.”</p>

<p>Before the test flight Virgin Orbit's CEO and president, Dan Hart said: “You’d have to get into the technical discussion of what did we prove? What data did we get, and what data did we not get? And how could we augment it, if we needed to, with ground testing?”&nbsp;</p>

<p>“This is a test flight, so the purpose of this flight is to incrementally test the rocket and the airplane and the system as we pass through the operations,” Hart said Saturday. “So we’ll be getting data on our (propellant) load sequence, our captive carry flight out, and the full flight of the rocket after it drops through first stage flight, separation, second stage flight, and so forth.</p>

<p>“And we have telemetry stations around the world to capture the data as it comes down,” Hart said. “The data … is the product of that flight, and every increment that we learn, from the moment, that we start fueling the rocket, to flying it out, to lighting the engines, and observing the response of the system … is a huge step in the maturation of a system.”</p>

<p>SpaceX’s founder and CEO, Elon Musk tweeted after Virgin Orbit's Monday launch and shared his experience on Falcon 1.&nbsp;</p>

Virgin Orbit's LauncherOne fails to accomplish goal on first test

<p>India will launch the PSLV-C45 on March 21 which will put 30 satellites, including one for electronic intelligence, in three different orbits.</p>

<p>Speaking to ANI, <a href="http://www.wionews.com/photos/in-pics-isros-five-successful-satellite-missions-in-2018-184234">Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO)</a> Chairman K Sivan said, “On March 21 we will have PSLV-C45 launch. It is going to launch an electronic intelligence satellite, along with 29 customer satellites from other countries. The speciality of this mission is that for the first time PSLV will launch satellites in 3 different orbits.”</p>

<p>Sivan also said that ISRO is planning to launch India's second moon mission Chandrayaan-2 by April end.</p>

<p>He also spoke about the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV), which is scheduled to launch two ‘strategic purpose’ satellites in July-August this year.</p>

<p>“SSLV is a small satellite launcher. The first launch will take place in July-August where two small satellites will be launched. They are for a strategic purpose and will be used for monitoring and mapping,” he said.</p>

<p>“Very soon we are going to make PSLVs from industry for which L and T and HAL have formed a consortium. Along with that small satellite launch vehicles will also be made by the industry,” Sivan added.</p>

<p>On February, 19 the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi had given its approval to the setting up of a new company under Department of Space (DoS) to commercially exploit the research and development work carried out by ISRO.</p>
