Casey Wasserman, head of LA28, told Cricbuzz, "We're still working through the specifics," when asked if New York is under consideration.&nbsp;

The time difference between Los Angeles and India is a significant one. It is 12 hours and 30 minutes and, thus, this&nbsp;means a prime-time night match in LA, around 8 PM, would be broadcast across the Indian subcontinent during&nbsp;early morning (when most will be busy with their daily household and professional work). On the other hand, the time difference between New York and India is slightly less, i.e. nine and a half hours. Hence, it is being seen as a more suitable option.

The matches, which will kick off around 10:30-11:00 AM on the East Coast, such as in New York, would enable the Indian fans to watch the games around 8 PM - a similar approach was also adopted by the International Cricket Council (ICC)&nbsp;for this year's&nbsp;T20 World Cup in June (co-hosted by West Indies and the USA).&nbsp;

Apart from the time zone considerations, finding a suitable venue is another challenge as there are limited&nbsp;cricket grounds in the US, with the country not known as a cricketing powerhouse. As a result, the LA28 organisers have not yet released the cricket venues, although&nbsp;the same has been done for most other sports.

Thus, the LA28 organisers have a task ahead to conduct the cricket games as the sport's re-inclusion has already generated good buzz.

"Unlike the other new sports, cricket presents a unique venue challenge. LA28 has been vocal about how it plans to keep costs down by utilizing existing venues, but there are very few - if any - suitable cricket venues in California. Or in the rest of the country," the Sportico website&nbsp;said. "The Indian market was a critical part of cricket's pitch to join LA28."

Notably, the format and qualification process for the cricket&nbsp;games&nbsp;at the 2028 Olympics are still being finalised. It is&nbsp;expected that the top six men’s and women’s teams in the ICC T20 rankings, at a certain cutoff date, will take part in the showpiece event.

The ICC is not losing hope of cricket being among "additional sports" to be played at the 2028 Los Angeles Games after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) started the process of identifying the core sports for the grand sporting spectacle.

The IOC on Thursday named 28 sports in the "initial programme" for the 2028 Olympics with skateboarding, surfing and sport climbing finding places in them. Boxing, weightlifting and modern pentathlon were excluded and the respective international federations have been given time until 2023 to meet certain criteria to secure their spot at the 2028 Games.

The list would be put to vote in the IOC Session in Beijing in February next year for approval, which is likely to be a formality. 
Host City Los Angeles can also propose additional sports in 2023 to be included in the 2028 Games and the ICC is hoping that cricket is among sports to get the nod of the IOC.

Baseball, softball and a version of American football could be in the running to bid for additional sports in 2028 Olympics.

"The process to pick additional sports by the host city starts next year (2023) and we are hoping cricket to be a part of that," an ICC Board member, who is privy to the process, told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

"We know it will be tough (for cricket to be included as an additional sport). There are no guarantees and we are up against some other great sports to try and get a spot in the 2028 LA Games."

In August, the ICC had expressed its intention to bid for cricket's inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, which also had the backing from the world's richest board BCCI.

The ICC has also formed an Olympic Working Group which will work on making the game part of the Olympics starting from 2028.

The decision comes after Germany's modern pentathlon coach Kim Raisner hit Annika Schleu's horse, Saint Boy, at the Tokyo Games this year when it refused to jump a fence. The incident led to widespread criticism of the sport.

"First, we know that this information will be surprising and even shocking to you," the International Modern Pentathlon Union said in a statement.

"It's not very long since we made a commitment to review and protect the riding discipline in the wake of the rescheduled Tokyo Games. But life within the Olympic movement changes fast.

"The decision to replace riding comes after our UIPM executive board endorsed a series of recommendations made by the UIPM Innovation Commission after a two-day meeting in Monaco last week."

Animal advocacy group PETA's senior vice president Kathy Guillermo welcomed the decision but called for change to be effected in the 2024 Paris Games.

"PETA is delighted UIPM heard PETA and the public and chose to make the pentathlon truly modern and humane," PETA said in a statement to Reuters.

"... We urge the governing board to implement the change in 2024 rather than 2028 - the horses who are whipped and spurred can suffer just as much in three years as in seven.

"Horses don't choose to compete and should not be punished because humans do."

Raisner's actions in Tokyo prompted the UIPM to disqualify&nbsp;her from the men's event, while PETA called on the International Olympic Committee to eliminate&nbsp;equestrian events from the Games citing cruelty in Tokyo.

Modern pentathlon has been an Olympic sport since 1912 and features five events: fencing, swimming, equestrian show jumping, pistol shooting and cross-country running.

UIPM president Klaus Schormann said the time had come for the sport's governing body to be "bold and ambitious" following strong recommendations from its Innovation Commission.

"On behalf of the UIPM executive board I ask our global community to embrace change and grasp the momentous opportunity before us," Schormann said in a separate statement.

"A new discipline will provide fresh impetus to our sport and strengthen the position of modern pentathlon within the Olympic movement."

UIPM said that the timeline for the selection of a new discipline - which must allow for global accessibility and be attractive and relevant for global youth among other conditions - would be communicated in the coming weeks.
