It has a unique feature of scolding users on sitting too close through its proximity alert. The Bravo Cam has a “viewing distance compensation,” with settings for adjusting voice and brightness.

The camera mounts to the top of the television and plugs into the USB port. It will automatically dim the television if it detects that no one is in the room.

The company is looking to harness its strengths in entertainment and sensors to play a bigger role in next-generation mobility.

Sony chairman and president Kenichiro Yoshida told a news conference, "With our imaging and sensing, cloud, 5G and entertainment technologies combined with our contents mastery, we believe Sony is well-positioned as a creative entertainment company to redefine mobility."

Although its once-dominant position in consumer electronics has been eroded by Asian rivals like South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co, Sony still has an arsenal of sophisticated technology in areas such as sensors critical to autonomous driving.

It also remains one of the world's biggest entertainment companies, home to prominent video game and movie franchises. Audio and entertainment systems are increasingly a focus for next-generation vehicles.&nbsp;

Rising competition from Chinese rivals, a shift to more advanced OLED (organic light-emitting diode) panels and slowing demand for smartphones and televisions have led to falling offtake and weak prices of&nbsp;LCD&nbsp;panels for&nbsp;South&nbsp;Korean&nbsp;display&nbsp;makers.

Samsung&nbsp;Display's cross-town rival LG&nbsp;Display&nbsp;Co Ltd converted one of its&nbsp;LCD&nbsp;production lines to an OLED production line.

That's a path that&nbsp;Samsung&nbsp;Display&nbsp;may also take, said Park Sung-soon, the analyst at Cape Investment &amp; Securities.

LG&nbsp;Display&nbsp;is also considering various scenarios for its remaining&nbsp;LCD&nbsp;production line in&nbsp;South&nbsp;Korea, said Chief Financial Officer Suh Dong-hee at an earnings briefing last month.

Prices for LG&nbsp;Display's main product, 50-inch TV&nbsp;LCDs, slid as much as 7.5 per cent in April-June versus the same period last year, data from WitsView, which is part of research provider TrendForce, showed.

Market researcher IHS Markit said TV panel prices continued their "free fall" in July, even after some Chinese panel makers started to adjust their production due to the high inventories.

The researcher said panel makers were reacting to the lacklustre demand forecast by their TV customers ahead of the year-end shopping season.

Japan Display said it is considering tapping new investors for capital to catch up in organic light-emitting diode (OLED) screens as its late entry into the technology is costing the display maker orders from its largest client, Apple.

The liquid crystal display (LCD) maker also outlined on Wednesday an operational overhaul under which it will<a href="http://www.wionews.com/science-tech/japan-display-incur-losses-to-cut-workforce-costs-18758"> streamline production lines and slash 3,700 jobs, or 30 per cent of its workforce</a>, resulting in a special loss of 170 billion yen ($1.55 billion) for the current year.

Japanese electronics makers have struggled to compete against their Asian rivals, ceding market share to cut-price Chinese competitors at the low end of the market but also failing to innovate enough to stay ahead in high-end products.

Japan Display has been caught out by a swift change in consumption trends, with handset makers shifting to the thinner and flexible OLED displays from LCDs for high-end models.

It plans to start mass-producing OLED panels for smartphones only in 2019, while Apple, whose orders account for more than half of the firm&#39;s current sales, is widely expected to begin adopting OLED for its iPhones later this year.

&quot;We now see no future for the smartphone panel business without OLED,&quot; CEO Nobuhiro Higashiiriki said at a quarterly results briefing. &quot;We have strategically changed our direction.&quot;

In the red over the past three years, Japan Display posted a net loss of 31.46 billion yen ($286.13 million) in the quarter ended June, versus a 11.8 billion yen loss a year ago.

Higashiiriki said the firm will seek partnership with global companies, potentially Chinese panel makers. &quot;Partnership could take various forms,&quot; with a capital injection among options, he said.

While Chinese display makers are seen by analysts as the most likely candidates for investing in Japan Display as they rapidly expand their presence in the display market with state support, there could be protectionist concerns.

There are doubts if Japan Display&#39;s main investor,&nbsp;the state-backed Innovation Network Corp of Japan (INCJ), would allow Chinese players to take a stake in the firm, said Masayuki Otani, chief market analyst at Securities Japan.

INCJ helped form Japan Display five years ago by combining the ailing display units of Sony, Hitachi and Toshiba. But the firm&#39;s continuing struggle questions the validity of government interventions in business.

Quick and bold investment decisions that are crucial in the competitive tech industry are often hard to make for funds with taxpayers&#39; money, analysts said.

As of now, INCJ is expected to play a major role in groups that are the front-runners for Toshiba&#39;s planned sale of its $18 billion chip business.
