The president is using his extensive power under the outer continental shelf lands act of 1953, which allows him to exclude federal seas from potential future lease and production of oil and gas. To undo Biden's decision, president-elect Trump would need to persuade congress to amend the legislation, as it does not explicitly grant presidents the power to do so. This would imply that federal waterways would once again be subject to development.&nbsp;

Climate activist Greta Thunberg has joined a protest in South-Western France against eight planned oil wells, which in theory will be banned in the country by 2040. The protest group says the exit from fossil fuels must begin now by rejecting this project.

The United Kingdom on Wednesday (September 27) greenlit oil and gas production in Rosebank field, the country's largest undeveloped field, in order to bolster energy security. The development has come one week after British government diluted its net-zero targets. Both developments have triggered condemnation from environmentalists.

Equinor and Ithaca energy will together invest USD 3.8 billion to develop the field. Equinor is a Norwegian oil and gas producer while Ithaca Energy is a subsidiary of Israeli group Delek.

The Rosebank oil field is in the North Sea off the coast of Scotland.

UK oil and gas regulator, The North Sea Transition Authority, said it had "granted development and production consent for the Rosebank field, north-west of Shetland".

Equinor has an 80 per cent interest in the project while Ithaca has the remainder.

"Rosebank stands as the largest undeveloped field in the UK," said Gilad Myerson, executive chairman at Ithaca Energy, as quoted by Reuters.

"The Rosebank project will create thousands of jobs and contribute significantly to securing the UK's energy needs for many years to come," he added.&nbsp;

The UK has now taken a stance that it should continue to produce fossil fuels to ensure energy security, especially in the wake of Russian invasion of Ukraine, even if it means pushing back net-zero carbon emissions target. Ukraine war has created hurdles in energy supply to Europe. Russia was a key energy provider to Europe and has reduced supply since last year as retaliation to economic sanctions.

"We will continue to back the UK's oil and gas industry to underpin our energy security, grow our economy and help us deliver the transition to cheaper, cleaner energy," she added.&nbsp;

<h3>Environmentalists not happy</h3>

The development hasn't gone down well with environmentalists.

Philip Evans, Greenpeace UK's climate campaigner, said, "Sunak has proven once and for all that he puts the profits of oil companies above everyday people".&nbsp;

"We know that relying on fossil fuels is terrible for our energy security, the cost of living, and the climate," he added in a statement.&nbsp;

US government has approved the $8 billion Willow oil drilling project in Alaska, media outlets reported on Monday saying that the move faces the wrath of climate activists and environmentalists.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The US Interior Department has reduced the size of the project by denying two of the five drill sites and approving the rest three proposed by Alaska's largest crude oil producer and largest owner of exploration leases, ConocoPhillips.&nbsp;

Earlier, the Biden administration was mooting to reduce the size of the project to two sites. Had the sites were reduced to only two, it would have yielded the company only 70% of the oil they initially shown the interest to drill from the project.&nbsp;

The approval of this very contentious project is also a political advance for Alaska’s bipartisan congressional delegation which lent its backing to the White House.&nbsp;The final scope of the project will cover 68,000 fewer acres, CNN reported citing sources.&nbsp;

On environment conservation front, the protections were extended to the special areas which include Teshekpuk Lake, Utukok Uplands, Peard Bay Colville River, Kasegaluk Lagoon.&nbsp;These places are crucial habitat to grizzly bears, migratory birds polar bears and caribou.&nbsp;

Owned by the US federal government, the Willow Project is a decades-long oil drilling venture in the National Petroleum Reserve.&nbsp;Even as the climate activists are strongly protesting against the project, the oil project would still years to fully take off with oil making its way in the market.&nbsp;

The area where the project will be constructed reportedly carries 600 million barrels of oil. As per Biden administration’s estimates, the project would generate enough oil to release 9.2 million metric tons of carbon pollution a year. This equates to adding 2 million gas-powered cars.&nbsp;

Earthjustice President Abigail Dillen said that the approval will be a blow to the climate goals.&nbsp;

“We are too late in the climate crisis to approve massive oil and gas projects that directly undermine the new clean economy that the Biden Administration committed to advancing,” Dillen said adding, “We know President Biden understands the existential threat of climate, but he is approving a project that derails his own climate goals.”&nbsp;
