Ohio Democratic gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton’s own mother urges voters not to vote for her daughter.

“My name is Donna Arthur and I’m Amy Acton’s mother. I worked at Children and Family Service Association, building one of the first two sexual abuse programs in America.

I love my daughter, but when I saw her lying about her opponent—and it’s not easy for a mother to say this—but Amy has a serious problem.

She is a liar. She lies about her past. She says she grew up living in a tent. None of that is true. She’s lied her entire life.

My daughter needs help, and she can’t help you if she needs help herself. People can change, but first they have to tell the truth, and my daughter still isn’t doing that.

Don’t vote for people who lie. Don’t let her become your governor. If you think she’ll make your life better, you’re fooling yourself. It will only get worse.”

That’s one hell of an October surprise.</p>&mdash; Walter Curt (@wcdispatch) <a href="https://x.com/wcdispatch/status/2112388948563554668?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">October 20, 2026</a></blockquote>

<p>Notably, this is not the first such ad by the Ramaswamy campaign. The Republican candidate's backers have previously launched other personal attacks against Acton, who has been leading in polls over the last month. Other aspects of Acton's personal life have also resurfaced during the election, including an incident when police were called to her home in 2019 during what was characterised as a domestic dispute.</p><h2><strong>The ad's murky origins</strong></h2><p>The origins of the ad, which circulated on social media on Monday (Oct 19) night, were initially unclear. <p>On AC360, Alyssa Farah Griffin called it "the most disgusting ad I've seen," saying anyone behind it "should be ashamed," and that Ramaswamy's decision to stand by it rather than denounce it "says all you need to know about his character." She predicted it "will absolutely backfire," noting the ad was only on social media, where no disclosure is required. "They seem to know exactly what they did. It's very clear she'd not even spoken to the mother in decades."</p>

<p>Journalist Gretchen Carlson agreed: "Weaponising childhood sexual assault never works." She said the ad says more about Ramaswamy than Acton. "This is going to be more about him than it is about Acton." Asked whether a loss in Ohio would end Ramaswamy's political career, the panel said this race "was probably his to lose," and that "the more people see Vivek Ramaswamy, the less they like."</p>
