Former&nbsp;Peruvian president Alberto Fujimori, who steered economic growth during the 1990s but was later jailed for human rights abuses stemming from a bloody war against Maoist rebels, died on Wednesday. He was aged 86.

Close colleagues visited him earlier in the day, reporting that he was in a critical condition.

Under his watch, the feared leader of the Maoist Shining Path, Abimael Guzman, was captured - dealing a crucial blow to a movement that in the 1980s seemed close to toppling the&nbsp;Peruvian state. Guzman died in prison in September 2021.&nbsp;

But many&nbsp;Peruvians saw Fujimori as an autocrat after he used military tanks to shut down Congress in 1992, redrafting the constitution to his liking to push free-market reforms and tough anti-terrorism laws.

A slew of corruption scandals during his 10-year administration also turned public opinion against him.&nbsp;

Shortly after he won a third election in 2000 - amending the constitution to run - videos emerged of his top adviser and spy chief Vladimiro Montesinos doling out cash to bribe politicians. Fujimori fled to exile in Japan.&nbsp;

He resigned via fax from Tokyo and then unsuccessfully campaigned for a Japanese senatorial seat.&nbsp;

Montesinos was later captured in Venezuela and jailed, convicted by the hundreds of videos he recorded of himself handing out cash bribes to politicians and business and media executives.

The cases against Fujimori piled up - including accusations that he had ordered the use of death squads in his battle against Shining Path militants.

Fujimori was safe in Japan - he was a dual citizen and Japan does not extradite its citizens. So many were shocked when in 2005 he decided to head back to&nbsp;Peru, apparently in hopes of forgiveness and a return to politics.

Instead, he was detained during a layover in Chile, extradited to&nbsp;Peru&nbsp;in 2007, and in 2009 he was convicted and sentenced to 25 years in prison.

<h2>'FUJI-SHOCK'</h2>

Once jailed, Fujimori's public appearances were limited to hospital visits where he often appeared disheveled and unwell.&nbsp;

While detractors dismissed his health complaints as a ploy to get out of prison, then-president Pedro Pablo Kuczynski briefly pardoned Fujimori in 2017.&nbsp;

Months later Kuczynski was impeached and the pardon overturned by&nbsp;Peru's top constitutional court, sending Fujimori back to the special prison that held him and no other inmates.

The court restored the pardon in December 2023, releasing the ailing Fujimori, who had suffered from stomach ulcers, hypertension and tongue cancer. In May 2024, Fujimori announced he had been diagnosed with a malignant tumor.&nbsp;

Fujimori's legacy has been most passionately defended by his daughter Keiko, who has been close to clinching the presidency herself three times on a platform that has included pardoning her father and defending his constitution.&nbsp;

Only two commandos and one of the remaining 72 hostages died. Television footage showed Fujimori calmly stepping over the corpses of the insurgents after the raid.

As per the New York Times, her daughter, Aurelia Engel, confirmed her death, citing recent health issues related to her heart and lungs.

Despite her father Emile Gilot's objections, she pursued her passion for art and studied at various institutions.&nbsp;

Françoise Gilot was dining with her closest friend, Geneviève Aliquot, and an actor named Alain Cuny at Le Catalan, a small restaurant on the rue des Grands-Augustins, near Picasso's Left Bank studio, when she had her first accidental encounter with Picasso in May 1943.

That accidental encounter marked the beginning of a tumultuous relationship. She became his lover despite the presence of other women in his life.&nbsp;

They had two children together, Claude and Paloma. However, their relationship was marked by Picasso's infidelity, and Gilot ultimately made the decision to leave him.

"No woman leaves a man like me," Picasso said upon hearing about the breakup, according to Gilot's account in 'Life With Picasso'.&nbsp;

"I told him maybe that was the way it looked to him, but I was one woman who would, and was about to. A man as famous and as rich as he? He couldn't believe it, he said," she wrote.

Leading glaciologist Claude Lorius, whose Antarctica discoveries in the 1980s helped prove humanity's role in global warming, has died at 91.

Lorius died on Tuesday morning in the French region of Burgundy, according to Jerome Chappellaz, a palaeoclimatologist and former colleague of his.&nbsp;

The French publisher Arthaud, which produced the glaciologist's memoirs, also announced his death in a statement.&nbsp;

A great scientist, "Claude was also of the finest calibre of polar expedition adventurers", said the famous French explorer Jean-Louis Etienne in a video posted on Twitter.

In 1955, fresh out of university, Lorius responded to an obscure advert to partake in a mission for the International Geophysical Year -- a global research program dedicated to revealing the icy continent's mysteries.&nbsp;

After two months of sailing and four weeks of traversing rough terrain, Lorius reached the Antarctica Charcot base, 320 kilometres (200 miles) inland.

"I did not choose science, I chose adventure," said the pioneering climatologist, born in 1932, in a past interview with AFP.&nbsp;

"We were extraordinarily lucky since Antarctica is the best place to bear witness to the planet's environmental problems" said Lorius.&nbsp;

He and two others stayed there for a year, confined to a cramped "burrow" with limited supplies and a faulty radio for communication, with temperatures at -40 degrees Celsius (-40 Fahrenheit) outside.

"We were cut off from the rest of the world for months, that's when I learned how to live together and how to show solidarity," he said. &nbsp;

<h2>Ice cube inspiration</h2>

Claude Lorius led 22 expeditions in Greenland and Antarctica, where he lived on and off for six years.&nbsp;

In the 1970s, Lorius began to suspect human involvement in the planet's warming.&nbsp;

But it wasn't until a 1984 expedition at the most remote Russian Antarctic base, Vostok, that Lorius was able to study ice cores drilled deep into the frozen polar landscape and confirm his suspicions.&nbsp;

He is perhaps most internationally renowned for research, published in 1987, into air bubbles trapped in the ice, which allowed scientists to look back over 160,000 years' worth of glacial records.&nbsp;

In 1965, an ice cube snatched from a sample core and submerged in his whiskey provided Lorius with a revelation: the ice contained air bubbles full of ancient air. &nbsp;

"I remember looking at the blue colour of the little ice cubes melting in the glass and as I saw the bubbles rise," said Lorius in an interview with the Independent newspaper in 2016.

"I realised the scientific potential of analysing the trapped air."&nbsp;

This research showed that while carbon dioxide had varied slightly over time, the concentrations of the greenhouse gas had rocketed as temperatures rose since the middle of the 19th century -- the dawn of the Industrial Revolution.&nbsp;

French research agency CNRS said that left "no room for doubt" that the warming was caused by the pollution from human activities.&nbsp;

From then on, Lorius dedicated himself to mobilising the fight against global warming.&nbsp;

He was an inaugural expert of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) after the UN expert group was created in 1988.

In 2002, along with colleague and friend Jean Jouzel, he was awarded the CNRS gold medal.

Lorius was also the first Frenchmen to receive the prestigious Blue Planet Prize.

Lorius returned to Antarctica in his eighties to feature in director Luc Jacquet's documentary "Ice and the Sky" showcasing the explorer's extraordinary career. The film premiered at the closing ceremony of the 2015 Cannes Film Festival.
