Rising for the fifth straight session, market benchmark Sensex gained 60 points to end at 33,940 in see-saw trade today, led by gains in metal, IT and consumer durables counters amid mixed Asian cues.

Sustained buying by domestic institutional investors (DIIs) and a mixed trend at other Asian bourses following overnight gains at the Wall Street helped key indices close in the positive zone, brokers said.

Investors are focusing on key macroeconomic data, including retail inflation and industrial production numbers due tomorrow and corporate results starting Friday.

The 30-share Sensex resumed higher and advanced to 33,981.54, but soon slipped on profit-taking to touch a low of 33,750.74, before settling up 60.19 points, or 0.18 per cent, at 33,940.44.

The gauge had gained 861.18 points in the previous four sessions.

The NSE 50-share index, after moving between 10,428.15 and 10,355.60 on alternate bouts of selling and buying, finally concluded at 10,417.15, up 14.90 points, or 0.14 per cent.

DIIs were net buyers as they bought shares worth Rs 653.65 crore yesterday, while foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) sold to the tune of Rs 684.99 crore, provisional data showed.&nbsp;

The 30-share Sensex was trading higher by 130.31 points, or 0.38 per cent, at 33,918.85, with all the sectoral indices rising up to 1.80 per cent.

The gauge had gained 774.47 points in the previous three sessions.

The NSE Nifty breached the 10,400-mark, up 38.80 points, or 0.37 per cent, at 10,418.15.

Meanwhile, domestic institutional investors (DIIs) bought shares worth Rs 359.35 crore yesterday, while foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) remained sellers and offloaded shares worth Rs 1,300.93 crore as per provisional data.

A firm trend in other Asian markets after Chinese President Xi Jinping eased worries over a simmering US trade conflict by promising new measures to open his country's massive economy "wider and wider" boosted investor sentiment here, brokers said.

The rupee's appreciation against the dollar and widening of bets by investors amid optimism ahead of earnings season also supported the uptrend, they said.

Major gainers included Axis Bank, Adani Ports, Tata Steel, L&T, ICICI Bank, Yes Bank, Kotak Bank, TCS, Power Grid, Bajaj Auto, Sun Pharma and Reliance Industries, gaining up to 2.41 per cent.

In the Asian region, Japan's Nikkei gained 1.08 per cent and Shanghai Composite rose 0.75 per cent in early trading today while Hong Kong's Hang Seng was up 0.82 per cent.

Indian shares rose on Wednesday as strong monthly sales data lifted automobile stocks such as Tata Motors Ltd that led gains on key indexes, with sentiment also boosted by a forecast of normal monsoon rainfall this year.

Rainfall during the monsoon season is expected to be 100 per cent of the long-term average, a private weather forecasting agency said earlier in the day, raising prospects of higher farm and economic growth in the $2 trillion economy.

The broader NSE Nifty was up 0.18 per cent at 10,263.35 as of 0541 GMT, while the benchmark BSE Sensex was 0.25 per cent higher at 33,452.45.

"There is a shift in the market towards quality growth and a shift to domestic consumption-focused sectors, particularly autos. Consumer-facing banking and private banking are also driving the move," said Sunil Sharma, chief investment officer at Sanctum Wealth Management.

The Nifty auto index rose as much as 2 per cent and was set to post a third consecutive session of gains.

Tata Motors climbed as much as 5.8 per cent after Morgan Stanley said sales of Land Rovers in the United States grew 38 per cent in March.

Eicher Motors Ltd rose as much as 3.8 per cent on a higher production forecast for Royal Enfield motorcycles in the current fiscal year.

Private lenders also rose, with the Nifty private bank index climbing as much as 0.7 per cent, ahead of a decision on monetary policy by India`s central bank. Yes Bank Ltd was up over 2 per cent.

The Reserve Bank of India is expected to keep monetary policy steady at its April meeting but shift to a hawkish stance by the end of this year and raise interest rates early in 2019 as inflation pressures build, a Reuters poll showed.

The 30-share Sensex tumbled by 284.11 points or 0.85 per cent to end at 33,033.09, its lowest closing since December 7, after shuttling between 32,991.14 and 33,331.21 as infrastructure, power, capital goods, PSU, healthcare, banking, oil and gas and metal stocks nosedived.

The index had lost 1,128.55 points in the previous five sessions.

The broader NSE Nifty dipped below the 10,200-mark to finish at 10,154.20, down by 95.05 points, or 0.93 per cent.

Meanwhile, domestic institutional investors (DIIs) net sold shares worth Rs 734.33 crore, while foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) bought shares to the tune of Rs 620.08 crore yesterday.&nbsp;

Forex dealers said sustained month-end demand for the American currency from importers, foreign fund outflows and the dollar&#39;s gains against other global currencies weighed on the rupee.

Investors were also cautious ahead of GDP and IIP numbers to be released later in the day.

Yesterday, the local currency had lost by 8 paise to end at 64.87 against the American unit on sustained dollar demand from importers and banks amid heavy capital outflows.

Force Motors Ltd reported a net profit RS14.65 crore in the December 2017 quarter compared to a profit of Rs23.25 crore a year ago. Revenue from operations stood at Rs750 crore in the third quarter, up from Rs716 crore last year. Shares traded 1.98% up at Rs3360.

Oil and Natural Gas Corp. Ltd has received approval from the government to sell its stake in Indian Oil Corp. Ltd and GAIL India Ltd to help fund the Rs36,915 crore acquisition of Hindustan Petroleum Corp. Ltd. ONGC shares rose 3.53% to Rs207, whereas HPCL shares dipped 1.94% to Rs393.95.

The Indian rupee strengthened marginally against the US dollar as local equity markets continued to hit fresh record highs. At 2.10pm, the home currency was trading at 63.83 a dollar, up 0.10% from its Monday&rsquo;s close of 63.87.

Sensex closes above 36,000 mark at all-time high

The benchmark BSE Sensex rose by 85 points to 36,247.02 in opening trade today on gains banking and pharma stocks.

Short-covering of bets, today being the last session of January expiry in the derivatives segment, kept the overall sentiment positive.

The 30-share index spurted by 85.38 points or 0.23 per cent at 36,247.02.

The gauge had gained 1,390.53 points in the previous six record-setting sessions and closed at an all-time high of 36,161.64 points after scaling a new peak of 36,268.19 in yesterday&#39;s session.

Metal, capital goods, oil and gas, Infrastructure, power and auto sector stocks were leading the rally, which lifted sentiments.

The NSE Nifty was also trading higher by 9.60 points, or 0.08 per cent, at 11,095.60.

Brokers said that the market mood remained buoyant, bolstered by continued capital inflows by foreign institutional investors (FIIs) and domestic investors.

According to provisional exchange data, FIIs put in a net Rs 776.4 crore in stocks yesterday.

The gauge had lost 2,087.31 points in the previous six sessions following a global rout in equities inflicted by inflation worries and imposition of a 10 per cent long-term capital gains tax on equities.

Sensex opens in green on value-buying, climbs 470 points

Benchmarks buckled under heavy selling pressure today as wary investors pocketed gains in recent winners ahead of the Union Budget amid lacklustre global leads.

The BSE Sensex sank about 250 points to end at 36,033.73, while the broader NSE Nifty dropped 80 points to 11,049.65.

Brokers said investors took money off the table and held back fresh bets ahead of the Union Budget on February 1.

Market sentiment was also impacted as other Asian markets retreated from record highs, tracking overnight meltdown at the Wall Street after a sell-off in Apple shares.

Investors were also cautious ahead of the US Federal Reserve&#39;s two-day monetary policy meeting beginning today.

The 30-share Sensex, after opening a shade lower at 36,277.12, continued its slide to crack the 36,000-mark and hit a low of 35,993.41 during the day. It finally settled at 36,033.73, down 249.52 points, or 0.69 per cent.

The index had gained 232.81 points yesterday and closed at a record high of 36,283.25.

The Nifty too closed lower by 80.75 points, or 0.73 per cent, at 11,049.65 after hitting a low of 11,033.90.

It had ended at a lifetime high of 11,130.40 yesterday.

&quot;Market slid followed by weaknesses in global markets while investors are likely to utilise the correction as improving domestic macros coupled with earnings growth will benefit in the long run.

Asian Paints was the worst performer among the Sensex components by falling 2.22 per cent, followed by Kotak Mahindra Bank at 2.20 per cent.

Other laggards were Axis Bank, Dr Reddy&#39;s, Adani Ports, Reliance Industries, Wipro, ICICI Bank, TCS, Yes Bank, HDFC Ltd, Infosys, Tata Steel, Tata Motors, Maruti Suzuki, NTPC, ONGC, Bajaj Auto, Bharti Airtel, ITC and HDFC Bank.

Bucking the trend, Coal India, Hero MotoCorp, Sun Pharma, SBI, IndusInd Bank, HUL and Power Grid finished with gains of up to 1.71 per cent.

Reliance Communications soared 10.46 per cent after the company reported narrowing of consolidated loss to Rs 130 crore for the quarter ended December 2017.

Sector-wise, the BSE consumer durables index was the weakest of the lost, dropping 1.74 per cent, followed by IT 1.07 per cent, teck 1.02 per cent, bankex 0.85 per cent, realty 0.80 per cent, metal 0.63 per cent, healthcare 0.61 per cent, infrastructure 0.56 per cent, auto 0.48 per cent, capital goods 0.36 per cent and FMCG 0.33 per cent.

Oil &amp; gas and PSU indices managed to close in the green.

The broader markets continued to face selling pressure, which pulled down the small-cap index by 1.34 per cent and mid-cap by 0.67 per cent.

Overseas, European stocks were trading lower following sharp losses in Asian bourses and on Wall Street. Key indices like Frankfurt&#39;s DAX was down by 0.35 per cent, while Paris CAC 40 shed 0.19 per cent in their late morning deals. London&#39;s FTSE fell 0.42 per cent.

Sensex, Nifty tumble from record highs ahead of Budget

Benchmark Sensex zoomed 233 points to end at yet another record high today after the Economic Survey said India will re-establish itself as the world&#39;s fastest growing major economy with GDP expanding by 7-7.5 per cent in 2018-19.

The beginning of February derivatives contracts and unabated foreign fund inflows amid a higher opening of European markets added to the optimism, brokers said.

The 30-share barometer, after opening on a strong footing on optimistic buying by participants, gathered momentum to touch an all-time high of 36,443.98.

However, it shed some ground on profit-booking, before finally finishing at 36,283.25, up by 232.81 points, or 0.65 per cent -- surpassing its previous record closing of 36,161.64 hit on January 24.

The 50-share NSE Nifty too closed at a fresh life high of 11,130.40 points, up 60.75 points, or 0.55 per cent. 
It broke its previous closing record of 11,086 reached on January 24.

The Economic Survey for 2017-18 said the GDP will grow on the back of major reforms which would be strengthened further in the next financial year.

The pre-budget survey pointed out that India can be rated as among the best performing economies in the world as the average growth during last three years is around 4 percentage points higher than global growth and nearly 3 percentage points higher than that of emerging markets and developing economies.

Sensex crosses 35,000 mark for first time, Nifty closes at all-time high

However, across-the-board profit booking at record levels pulled it down to a low of 34,735.55. It finally settled 72.46 points, or 0.21 per cent lower at 34,771.05.

The gauge had gained 410.44 points in the previous three sessions and closed at an all-time high of 34,843.51 yesterday.

The wider NSE Nifty too slipped from record but managed to close above the crucial 10,700 mark at 10,700.45 points, down 41.10 points or 0.38 per cent.

It shuttled between 10,762.35 and 10,687.85 during the session.

Also, the NSE Nifty went up by 43.30 points or 0.41 per cent to 10.485.50.

There were a number of reasons for the closing highs.

Risk appetite grew with the BJP&#39;s electoral wins.

And while Asian shares were mixed, Europe opened higher after a record-setting session on Wall Street on bets that US lawmakers would pass a proposed tax cut.

India&#39;s largest car maker Maruti Suzuki was in top gear, with a maximum rise of 5.33 per cent. Other auto stocks were also in demand.

NTPC, ONGC, ICICI Bank, HUL and PowerGrid ended in the green.

On the sectoral front, barring the IT index, all others ended the day with gains.&nbsp;

The 30-share Sensex was trading higher by 190.36 points, or 0.57 per cent, at 33,139.57, with all sectoral indices in the green, led by consumer durables, bank, metal and auto.

The gauge had rallied 352.03 points yesterday.

The NSE Nifty too rose 60.65 points, or 0.59 per cent, at 10,227.35 in early trade today.

Brokers said unabated buying by retail and domestic institutional investors and a firm trend in other Asian markets influenced sentiment here.

Prominent gainers included Tata Motors, Bharti Airtel, Adani Ports, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, Maruti Suzuki, ONGC, HDFC Bank, HDFC Ltd, Bajaj Auto, Wipro, TCS, Cipla and SBI, gaining up to 1.68 per cent.

Japan&#39;s Nikkei was up 1.22 per cent while Hong Kong&#39;s Hang Seng rose 0.57 per cent in early trade today. Shanghai Composite, however, shed 0.08 per cent.

The gauge had fallen 121.68 points in the previous two sessions.

The 50-share NSE Nifty too was quoting lower by 57.50 points, or 0.55 per cent, at 10,303.80.

Weakness in the rupee, which slipped 24 paise to 64.55 against the dollar today, too weighed on the sentiments.

Among laggards Kotak Bank, Cipla, Adani Ports, ONGC, M&amp;M, Reliance Industries, Coal India, Axis Bank, Hind Unilever, Tata Motors, Bharti Airtel, HDFC Ltd, Tata Steel and Lupin dropped up to 1.71 per cent.

The barometer had lost 105.85 points in the previous session.

Also, the NSE Nifty was up 21.65 points, or 0.20 per cent, at 10,391.90.

Brokers said a fresh spell of buying triggered by a mixed trend in some other Asian bourses following overnight gains in the US markets buoyed the sentiment.

Besides, covering-up pending short positions by speculators ahead of November series expiry in the derivatives segment supported the upmove, they said.

Major gainers were Coal India, ONGC, Dr Reddy&#39;s, Reliance Industries, NTPC, Cipla, L&amp;T, Tata Motors, ITC Ltd, Infosys, Bajaj Auto and SBI, gaining up to 2.11 per cent.

Indian shares inched up in thin trade on Thursday with gains in IT stocks such as Infosys offsetting losses in banking shares.

IT stocks were among the top gainers with Infosys rising as much as 2.4 per cent after a group of institutional investors asked the company to bring former CEO Nandan Nilekani back on to its board to settle the feud with the founders.

Gains were however muted as investors booked profit in banking shares after a rally in the previous session following federal cabinet&#39;s approval of a mechanism to oversee consolidation in public sector banks.

Shares of state-run lenders Punjab National Bank and Allahabad Bank fell 1.5 per cent and 1.8 per cent, after gaining 3.4 per cent and 4.7 per cent in the previous session.

A stronger bank will not readily absorb a weaker one because it wouldn&#39;t want its balance sheet to weaken, said Saurabh Jain, assistant vice-president of research at SMC Global Securities.

HCL Infosystems rose 18.1 per cent after signing an agreement with Apple India for distribution of iPhones and other Apple products in India.

Energy stocks gained with Indian Oil up 3.2 per cent and Oil and Natural Gas Corp rising 1.6 per cent.
