State-run banks' gross non-performing assets (GNPAs) from the credit card segment have doubled to 18 per cent at the end of FY23, the Reserve Bank of India said on Wednesday. It was about 9 per cent in the year-ago period and the same stood at around 15 per cent in September 2022, the central bank said in its biannual Financial Stability Report (FSR). 
 
The data release comes amid news reports stating that the RBI has been cautioning banks about the risks of unsecured books, which include credit cards, personal loans, and microfinance. 
 
The FSR released on Wednesday said at an overall level, there was a marginal uptick in the NPAs in the credit card&nbsp;receivables category for the banking system in FY23 at 2 per cent.

Even as the state-run lenders showed heightened stress, private sector banks' GNPAs from credit card receivables remained broadly flat at 1.9 per cent, while the same was 1.8 per cent for foreign banks. 
 
At an overall level, the banking system's GNPAs fell to a 10-year-low of 3.9 per cent at the end of FY23, and are expected to improve further to 3.6 per cent by the end of FY24 under the baseline scenario, RBI said. 
 
Meanwhile, RBI said that high inflation coupled with a rise in borrowing costs adversely impacts the finances of households and their loan repayment capacity and stressed that this can have implications for lending banks. 
 
Identifying different measures of risks using individual home loan data, it found that a twin shock in the form of a simultaneous increase in inflation and lending rates can put even households with sustainable repayment capacity at risk and double the loans at risk.

State Bank of India (SBI) — the country’s largest lender — reported an 81% rise in quarterly profit on Friday, helped by a one-time gain from a stake sale in its life insurance unit.

Net profit of SBI rose 81% year-on-year to Rs 4,189 crore in the three months ended June. This includes an exceptional gain worth Rs 1,540 crore due to sale of investments in SBI Life Insurance.

Country's largest bank's standalone total income increased to Rs 74,457.86 crore in the first quarter of 2020-21 as against Rs 70,653.23 crore in the same period a year ago, as per the financial results posted by the bank on stock exchanges.

Its gross non-performing assets (NPA) of the total advances declined to 5.44 per cent at June-end, over 7.53 per cent at June-end last year.

Similarly, net NPAs also declined to 1.8 per cent in June 2020 against 3.07 per cent a year ago.

On a consolidated basis, SBI's net profit rose by 62 per cent to Rs 4,776.50 crore as against Rs 2,950.50 crore in the same quarter a year ago.

At the same time, total income increased Rs 87.984.33 crore as compared to Rs 83,274.04 crore in the first quarter of the previous fiscal.&nbsp;

The country's largest lender SBI today posted a standalone net loss of Rs 7,718.17 crore for the March quarter due to higher non-performing assets (NPAs).

The bank had reported a net profit of Rs 2,814.82 crore in the corresponding period of 2016-17.

Sequentially, the loss widened from Rs 2,416.37 crore in the third quarter ended December 2017.

Total income during the January-March quarter was up at Rs 68,436.06 crore, from Rs 57,720.07 crore in the same period a year earlier, the bank said in a regulatory filing.

Gross NPAs, as a percentage of gross loans, jumped to 10.91 per cent from 6.90 per cent at March-end 2017.

Net NPAs rose to 5.73 per cent of the net advances compared to 3.71 per cent last year.

Stock of SBI was trading 5.2 per cent up at Rs 257.85 on BSE in afternoon trade.&nbsp
