<p>The decision was taken after nearly 200 Jain monks held protests demanding that nearly 250 butcher shops in the city be closed.</p>

<p>Palitana, which is located in Gujarat, is one of the holiest pilgrimage sites for Jains. The place, which is located around Shatrunjaya Hills, is also known as the Jain Temple Town.&nbsp;</p>

<p>There are more than 800 temples in the city, the most famous among them is Adinath Temple.</p>

<p>The orders to regulate the selling of non-vegetarian food were also imposed in Rajkot city. In this city, which is also in&nbsp;Gujarat, orders were issued to stop the preparation and display of non-vegetarian food in public spaces.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Similar orders were issued in the Indian&nbsp;cities of&nbsp;Vadodara, Junagadh and Ahmedabad, located in the same state. The people, who opposed the display of non-vegetarian food, said that seeing&nbsp;meat in the open can hurt people's sensitivities and negatively impact people.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel said that such regulations were also imposed to reduce traffic congestion.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Vegetarianism was epitomised by Mahatma Gandhi in Gujarat and his ideology was piously followed by millions.</p>

<p>However, the father of the nation had said that he once consumed meat during his school days, when his elder brother's friend had asked him to eat mutton.</p>

<p>But for the rest of his life, Gandhi avoided non-vegetarian food since he respected his parents. Gandhi's parents were devout Vaishnavites and were Hindu belief system's followers which prescribed strict vegetarianism.</p>

<p>But now a study carried out by reasearchers from Oxford University says that vegetarians have a lower risk of cancer than non-vegetarians. The researchers say that the chance of developing cancer is 14 per cent lower in vegetarians, pescatarians to be precise (those who eat fish but not other meats).</p>

<p>For this study, the researchers analysed data on more than 470,000 Britons. It was found that pescatarians had a lower level of cancer risk.</p>

<p>However, authors of the research papers say that this did not mean that meat-eating leads to cancer. The team, lead by Cody Watling from Oxford’s population health cancer epidemiology unit said that factors such as habit of smoking and body fat content also plays part in determining the risk of cancer.</p>

Busting 'meaty' myths: How urban India eats

<p>The Madras High Court has dismissed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking to permit the authorities to remove shops run by Muslims and other religions near Palane Temple Hills Girivala pathai, <a href="http://www.jantakareporter.com/india/eating-beef-not-offence-no-law-touches-eating-habits-religion-madras-high-court/41218/" target="_blank">Janta Ka Reporter </a>reports.</p>

<p>The petitioner claimed that disharmony was caused because people in the shops&nbsp;were eating beef and insulting the devotees&#39; religious faith.</p>

<p>Further, the petitioner claimed that merely crossing the shops in the vicinity of the temple made devotees uncomfortable, as the shops belonged to Muslims and people of other religions, where they&nbsp;&quot;indiscriminately&quot; ate beef and other meats.</p>

<p>The Bench of Justices S Manikumar and CT Selvam dismissed these contentions strongly: &quot;Contention of the petitioner that the temple property adjacent to Girivalathapathai, are occupied by people belonging to Islam and other religion is unsubstantiated, by&nbsp;even a scrap of paper. The petitioner has not substantiated that people belonging to another religion cannot have any shops in the property.</p>

<p>&quot;The other contention that the occupants of the shops indiscriminately eat beef and other non vegetarian food, by sitting in the stairs of the Palani Hills and insulting the religious faith of Hindus and if the same is not eventually checked, it would lead to disharmony, is not supported by any evidence. The further contention that by eating non-vegetarian food they have created discomfort to Hindu devotees also not substantiated.&quot;</p>

<p>Addressing the subect of the Indian Penal Code on&nbsp;eating beef in general, the Madras High Court stated unequivocally: &quot;Nowhere in the Indian penal code is it stated that eating non-vegetarian food is an offence. There is no law touching eating haits of any religion and in such a view of the matter, the contention of the petitioner that eating beef is an offence cannot be accepted.&quot;</p>
