When you hear a word like 'robot surgeon', you imagine a complex machinery carrying out an operative&nbsp;procedure on a patient. But what about 'anthrobots', does this ring a bell? Well, read on.

Gizem Gumuskaya, a Ph.D. candidate from Tufts University Wyss Institute for Biologically-Inspired Engineering has converted human cells into tiny robots which in turn have found to be aiding human tissue healing in her experiments. These tiny robots are being called 'anthrobots'.

Well, it certainly doesn't mean that we now have an army of tiny cell-robots that can heal you from inside. But the work carried out by Gumuskaya and her team is certainly a step in that direction.

<h2>The work</h2>

To make these anthrobots, Gumuskya chose cells that are found in the lining of the human trachea. These cells have hair-like structures called cilia which help in flow of liquids.

Gumuskaya began by growing thousands of these cells in a 3D Matrix for two weeks. During this period, the cells multiplied and came together forming spheroids.

A new study revealed that brain cell components began forming around 800 million years ago in shallow seas. Experts from Spain and Germany have discovered characteristics of specialised secretory cells in simple animals called placozoans.&nbsp;

These basic creatures have no organs and are roughly the size of a grain of sand, consisting of little more than a colony of different cell types. Placozoans once hunted microbes and browsed algae in the warm shallows of seas 800 million years ago.

<h2>Parallels between neurons and 800 million years old cells</h2>

Centre for Genomic Regulation cell biologist Sebastián Najle and colleagues discovered these so-called peptidergic cells have a number of uncannily similar traits to the cells we owe our own smarts.

"We were astounded by the parallels," exclaims Najle.

"The placozoan peptidergic cells have many similarities to primitive neuronal cells, even if they aren't quite there yet. It's like looking at an evolutionary stepping stone."&nbsp;

After a genetic analysis was carried out, it was found that cells coordinated the tiny animal’s behaviours by releasing peptide signals much as neurons do.&nbsp;

The researchers identified 14 different types of peptide cells in the small marine animals. Comparing the tissues in four known placozoa species as well as with other early animals, the team found these cells even have some of the same genes as our neurons.

But there were a few differences between the two. The placozoan cells were missing specialised components that our neurons have to receive peptide signals or generate electrical signals. Instead, they use receptor proteins (GCPR) to receive the chemical messages, which are common across many animal cell types and not specific to neurons.

The genes of the peptide-releasing cells were highly conserved in all the placozoans, but absent in other early animals like sponges and comb jellies (ctenophores).

This suggests the peptide-secreting cells may have evolved before other neuron-like cells.

The first known modern neuron arose around 650 million years ago in the common ancestor of jellyfish and the bilaterian group of animals that led to us.

"Cells are the fundamental units of life, so understanding how they come into being or change over time is key to explain the evolutionary story of life. Placozoans, ctenophores, sponges and other non-traditional model animals harbour secrets that we are only just beginning to unlock," concludes evolutionary biologist Arnau Sebé-Pedros.

Scientists just taught human brain cells to play 'Pong'. This is how

After conducting an analysis of cranial fossils, scientists have identified the reason behind the shrinking of the human brain 3,000 years ago.

The study, published in the journal Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution, shows that our ancestors had brains that were larger than our own.

According to the study's lead author Jeremy DeSilva, an anthropologist at Dartmouth College in the United States, "This is much more recent than we anticipated. We were expecting something closer to 30,000 years ago."

The brain, which has been humans’ biggest advantage in surviving catastrophes and subjugating other species throughout history, contains 86 million neurons.

In comparison, an ant's brain is roughly one tenth of a cubic millimetre in volume and contains just 250,000 neurons.

“The assumption has been that brain evolution was basically done by the Pleistocene, so when you find a skeleton or a skull that’s 4,000 years old, people don’t’ run to measure the brain size. The assumption is it’s going to be the same as people living today and the same as people living in the late-Pleistocene,” DeSilva said.

“What we were able to determine is that the downward trend is best positioned around 3,000 years ago.”

The human brain, which weighs about three pounds (1.4 kgs) and is mostly made of water, is the building block of the nervous system and every neuron in the brain may send as many as 1,000 signals at an impressive speed of up to 250 miles an hour.

“As these social insects become more and more social, their neural ganglia get bigger, but they reach a point where there’s so many of them that they specialize and rely on each other through collective intelligence,” DeSilva said.

He added “Our interpretation is that humans have become more social and might be experiencing something similar. If you can have a smaller brain, and store more information outside, and then interact with that in a more complex way, you can have the best of both worlds where your collective intelligence is increasing as a society and as a population, even though each individual brain might be getting a little smaller.”

And since a single neuron can connect to at least 1,000 other neurons, a single brain may have at least 100 trillion connections in all. Yet brain signals, which run on electricity, involve less than one-tenth the voltage of an ordinary flashlight battery.
