Nepal and China on Tuesday signed a nine-point agreement as Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli met President Xi Jinping in Beijing when the two leaders discussed connectivity, industrial development, infrastructural development and trade and tourism among other issues.

Earlier, Oli -- who is on a four-day official visit -- held a bilateral meeting with his Chinese counterpart Li Qiang in Beijing, the Prime Minister's Secretariat said.

The bilateral meeting with the Chinese president, at the State Hall in Beijing, mainly dwelt on matters related to connectivity, industrial development, infrastructural development, medical cooperation, agricultural development, trade and tourism, investment, science and technology, sports, disaster management, people-to-people contact and poverty alleviation, Krishna Prasad Dhakal, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said in Kathmandu.

Dhakal said that a nine-point agreement was also signed during the visit, including several memorandums of understanding (MoUs).

Agreements that were signed include an exchange of letters regarding the construction of the Tokha-Chhahari tunnel road near Kathmandu; an MoU on Nepal-China trade promotion, and an exchange of certificates of completion of the renovation of the historic nine-storey palace situated in Basantapur in Kathmandu.

Also, MoUs on protocol relating to the export of thermally processed buffalo meat to China; on development and construction works; on economic and technical assistance; on Chinese language education, and on cooperation in communication technology between Nepal Television and China Media Group were signed.

There was also an exchange of letters relating to aid in cash, he said.

Prime Minister Oli is on a four-day official visit to China starting Sunday. He will return on December 5.

On Sunday, the Nepal government announced that it has accepted projects worth USD 20 million as grant assistance from China ahead of Prime Minister Oli's first official visit to that country after assuming office for the fourth time.

Besides, the Nepali Cabinet also decided to accept 300 million Chinese Yuan (USD 4.13 million approximately) worth projects proposed by the government of China, the government spokesperson said.

Meanwhile, Nepal PM reiterated country’s commitment on ‘One China Policy’, “The Nepali side firmly upholds the one-China principle, believes that both Taiwan and Xizang are inalienable parts of China, opposes "Taiwan independence" and will never allow any force to use the Nepali territory for anti-China activities.”

China has been pressing Nepal to sign the BRI implementation plan, as no projects have been executed under this flagship initiative. This situation reflects a failure on China's part in Nepal, showcasing issues in executing agreements with the Himalayan nation.&nbsp;

The prime minister also stated that Nepal is mindful of and aware of the debt trap: “We will push the agreement by ensuring that we won’t fall into a debt trap.”&nbsp;

Oli also spoke on China's debt-trap policy by first offering financial assistance, Oli said that the country wants support for projects, investments, and they take loans "carefully".&nbsp;

"We are concentrating on our resources on economic development and our resources are not enough, (so) we want to support, investments, sometimes loans also for some projects but carefully," the Nepalese PM said.&nbsp;

"Taking loan and drinking ghee that's not our principle and yes we have to take some loans, grant also."

He said that as one country takes loans from other countries, similarly it takes loans from China and the amount is not "huge".&nbsp;

Oli also gave the example of the sort of loans where Chinese companies compete and if they win it, then they do the work.&nbsp;

China is openly interfering in Nepal's internal politics. On Tuesday,&nbsp;the Chinese ambassador met the senior most leader of the Nepal Communist Party,&nbsp;the former prime minister of Nepal&nbsp;Jhala Nath Khanal.

The meeting is said to have lasted for over 45 minutes but&nbsp;there is no word on what transpired. However, it hasn't gone unnoticed by political leaders and the civil society in Nepal.

There have been protests against the Chinese embassy and the Chinese envoy in particular.

Few images from Kathmandu that made rounds showed people holding placards that read "Go back China --- keep silence Yanqi".

It's the same message from Nepal's political leaders. One leader after another has been putting out tweets condemning China's open interference in Nepal's domestic affairs.

A tweet by Kamal Thapa who is the former deputy prime minister of Nepal said: "PM Oli says Indian ambassador was active in overthrowing the government. On the other hand, the Chinese ambassador reached the leaders' house to save the government."

Nepalese journalists too are calling out this hypocrisy. Pushpa KC is a journalist at Nepal live, she said: "What activism is the Chinese ambassador taking advantage of?"

The Chinese ambassador has held a series of political meetings since May 1 which is being&nbsp;called to&nbsp;reconcile differences within the ruling party. The meetings also reflect China's growing clout&nbsp;in Nepal.

The Himalayan said: "Yanqui-Nepal meet, China's bid to keep NCP united?" From English dailies to vernacular newspapers, almost every media organisation carried the same story with similar headlines. China is openly interfering in Nepal's internal politics. On Tuesday, the Chinese ambassador met the senior most leader of the Nepal Communist Party, the former prime minister of Nepal Jhala Nath Khanal. The meeting is said to have lasted for over 45 minutes but there is no word on what transpired. However, it hasn't gone unnoticed by political leaders and the civil society in Nepal. There have been protests against the Chinese embassy and the Chinese envoy in particular. Few images from Kathmandu that made rounds showed people holding placards that read "Go back China --- keep silence Yanqi". It's the same message from Nepal's political leaders. One leader after another has been putting out tweets condemning China's open interference in Nepal's domestic affairs. A tweet by Kamal Thapa who is the former deputy prime minister of Nepal said: "PM Oli says Indian ambassador was active in overthrowing the government. On the other hand, the Chinese ambassador reached the leaders' house to save the government." Nepalese journalists too are calling out this hypocrisy. Pushpa KC is a journalist at Nepal live, she said: "What activism is the Chinese ambassador taking advantage of?" The Chinese ambassador has held a series of political meetings since May 1 which is being called to reconcile differences within the ruling party. The meetings also reflect China's growing clout in Nepal.
