Conjoined twins from Odisha successfully separated

The first phase of surgery to separate two-year-old twins from Odisha, who are joined at the head, was completed successfully at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi.

In the almost 20-hour-long surgery, the doctors performed a venous bypass to separate the veins shared by the babies that return blood to the heart from the brain.

"The surgery began yesterday at around 9 am and went on till 5 am today. The children are under observation," a senior doctor at AIIMS said.

According to the doctor, the surgery to separate them will be taken up by the end of October.

The twins - Jagannath and Balram - from Kandhamal district in Odisha, are craniopagus conjoined twins who are joined at the head. This is a very rare condition.

A team of around 20 specialists from the institute's neurosurgery, neuro-anaesthesia and plastic surgery department besides a Japanese expert were involved in the procedure.

A series of investigations, including multiple MRIs, CT scans, and angiograms, were carried out on the twins to see to what extent the veins in their brains are fused and whether surgery was feasible.

The 27-month-old twins were shifted to AIIMS on July 13.

Meanwhile, the Odisha government today said it would seek the assistance of a specialist doctor from the US for the second phase of surgery on the conjoined twins.

"The health condition of the twins is stable. The government is now planning to engage a specialist doctor from the USA for the second phase of operation," state health and family welfare minister P K Jena told reporters here.

AIIMS, New Delhi neurosurgery department professor Ashok Mohapatra told the news agency's reporter in Bhubaneswar over phone that the twins have been kept on ventilation as the doctors are careful against any kind of infection.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had yesterday tweeted "I join the people of Odisha in prayer for success of surgery and new life for the conjoined twins fondly called Jaga-Balaia. Jai Jagannath."

Earlier, Patnaik had sanctioned Rs one crore from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund for the surgery on the conjoined twins.

"We pray the God for the successful separation of their heads. The children are in ventilator. We wish for their speedy recovery," said Pushpanjali Kanhara and Bhuiya Kanhara, the parents of Jaga-Balia.

Deepak Gupta, professor of neurosurgery, had said the twins suffer from the condition which afflicts one in 30 lakh children, of which 50 per cent die either at birth or within 24 hours.

Surgery is feasible only on 25 per cent of the survivors while the rest continue to live with the condition.

"Also, there is less than a 20 per cent chance of survival among those who undergo this surgery. Such operations are extremely challenging," he had said.

After pulling a straight win in the local polls in Odisha, the BJP seems to have entered into campaign mode in the state where assembly polls are still two years away.

Not only is the National Executive being organised in Bhubaneswar in April, indications are being given that the "Look East" policy will be part of BJP’s agenda in Odisha.

Such is the importance of this state that Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan openly accused serving chief minister of Odisha, Naveen Patnaik of subsidy mismanagement.

"There is no kerosene shortage in Odisha. Why is my name and Naveen Patnaik’s name still in the subsidy list? Subsidy is being pilfered in Odisha and the state government has not been able to contain it. Should Naveen Patnaik get kerosene out of PDS?," said Dharmendra Pradhan.

He also said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will thank the people of Odisha for the win they gave to BJP in the local polls. The minister also categorically accused the Odisha government of mismanagement. "There is mistrust and distrust of Naveen Patnaik’s government and we will continue to focus on building our organisation in every nook and corner of the state," said Mr Pradhan.

When this question was posed to the Chief Whip of the BJD, Tathagat Sathpathy, he said, "These accusations are false and we have seen Odisha progress right in front of our eyes. Evidence of subsidy mismanagement must be given first before making a statement like this." Tathagath maintains that kerosene shortage exists in tribal areas of Odisha and that Dharmendra Pradhan instead of charging the chief minister must look into the cause of kerosene shortage.

BJD in Odisha has been in power for more than 15 years and instead of the Congress, the BJP has been able to make best of anti-incumbency in the state which was reflected in the local polls held this year. When asked about splitting the BJD and early elections, the minister said that BJP is not interested in the internal affairs of BJD and described the infighting as a clan war.

Dharmendra Pradhan though maintains that the state government is yet to produce a proper list and ensure that subsidies reach the right segment. The National Executive in Odisha is of great importance to the BJP as it would try to make inroads in eastern states where BJP’s performance remained marginal in 2014.

"Eastern states of India need to come at par with rest of the country. We will discuss the election of 2019 and 75 years of independence in 2022. The issues of eastern India too would be taken up and discussed in the land of Jagannath,” he said.
