The chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) recommended judges Wednesday (Nov. 27) to issue an arrest warrant for Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing, the head of Myanmar’s military regime.

Hlaing is accused of committing crimes against Myanmar’s Rohingya Muslim minority since he overthrew the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi in a 2021 coup.

"After an extensive, independent and impartial investigation, my office has concluded that there are reasonable grounds to believe that senior general and acting president Min Aung Hlaing ... bears criminal responsibility for crimes against humanity," the top prosecutor, Karim Khan, said in a statement.

He added that the atrocities against Rohingya community were carried out with the help of armed forces, the Tatmadaw, and national and border police "as well as non-Rohingya citizens".

Karim Khan said he would ask for more warrants for people involved in the actions carried out with "genocidal intent".

"In doing so, we will be demonstrating, together with all of our partners, that the Rohingya have not been forgotten. That they, like all people around the world, are entitled to the protection of the law," he added.

Seized Myanmarese boat carried as much drugs as ICG confiscated in 47 years

This heightened vigil off India's eastern archipelago is what led to the country's biggest drug haul - 5.5 tonnes (5,500kg) of the synthetic narcotic substance Methamphetamine from a Myanmarese fishing boat "Soe Wai Yan Htoo".

This massive drug haul by the Indian Coast Guard (ICG), dwarfs all others that preceded it. Typically, the ICG seizes between 1 and 1.5 tonnes of drugs (of various types) in an entire year.&nbsp;

The now apprehended Myanmarese boat was first spotted by the ICG's Dornier-228 maritime patrol aircraft. The foreign-origin boat was seen operating in a suspicious manner, following which the information was passed on to the Joint Operation Centre (JOC), which subsequently deployed an ICG Fast Patrol Vessel, ICG Ship Aruna Asaf Ali from Sri Vijaya Puram (formerly Port Blair) to intercept the suspicious Myanmarese boat.

Despite the stormy conditions caused by the weather system in the Bay of Bengal, the ICG ship braved rough sea conditions and proceeded to intercept the suspicious Myanmarese boat. The ICG ship shadowed the vessel for several hours, till early morning Sunday, 24th November.&nbsp;

At the opportune moment, the team from ICG Ship Aruna Asaf Ali boarded the suspicious Myanmarese boat for investigation. The boat was eight nautical miles (approx 15kms) off Barren Island in Indian Territorial waters when the joint interrogation was carried out around 6:30 am IST, Sunday.&nbsp;

Subsequently, the six-member boat crew were identified as Myanmarese nationals. During rummaging of the boat, the boarding party detected a massive quantity of a white crystalline compound and one portable Inmarsat Satellite phone. The white crystalline compound was anticipated to be contraband, and hence the boat was apprehended.

Thereafter, the boat was brought to Sri Vijaya Puram for further investigation. ICG Ship Aruna Asaf Ali, along with the apprehended boat, entered Sri Vijaya Puram at 5 am on Monday, 25th November.

Aung Ko Ko, 37, died after three soldiers and a Myanmar national brought him to an abandoned military bunker where they kicked and beat him with a bamboo stick for wearing the uniform of a neighbourhood watch group adorned with the Thai flag, Fortify Rights said, citing eyewitnesses and legal documents.

A Thai court convicted the Myanmar man, Sirachuch, in September to five years in prison for being an accomplice to Aung Ko Ko's death, according to Fortify Rights and the defendant's lawyer, who declined to comment further, citing the sensitivity of the case.

However, the police chief in Mae Sot, where Aung Ko Ko's body was found, told Reuters Sirachuch had not identified his accomplices.

“We have followed the legal process fully but he did not name others," Police Colonel Pittayakon Petcharat said.
