The US has congratulated India on joining the Australia Group saying it underscores New Delhi&#39;s excellent non-proliferation credentials and commitment to preventing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

India last week <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/india-joins-australia-group-30086">gained entry into the Australia Group</a> (AG), an important non-proliferation regime which seeks to ensure that exports do not contribute to the development of chemical or biological weapons.

&quot;This latest accomplishment underscores the Indian government&#39;s excellent non-proliferation credentials and commitment to preventing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, including by regulating the trade of sensitive goods and technologies,&quot; State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert said on Tuesday.

&quot;Its (India&#39;s) accession bolsters the effectiveness of the regime&#39;s non-proliferation efforts,&quot; she said.

The United States congratulates India on becoming the newest member of the Australia Group, an informal forum that seeks to prevent the proliferation of chemical and biological weapons, and which now counts 43 members, she said.

&quot;India is a valued non-proliferation partner. We look forward to continuing our work with India in the Australia Group in furtherance of our shared nonproliferation goals,&quot; Nauert said in a statement.

After the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR) and the Wassenaar Arrangement (WA), the membership in another of the four major export control regimes is expected to give India a leg-up in its bid to secure a berth in the 48-member Nuclear Suppliers Group, which has been blocked by China at the behest of Pakistan. 
China is not a member of the MTCR, the WA and the AG.

Membership in the Australia Group comes months after India secured a berth in the Wassernaar Arrangement in December last year. New Delhi had bagged membership in the elite Missile Control Technology Regime (MTCR) in 2016.

The Wassenaar Arrangement on Export Controls for Conventional Arms and Dual-Use Goods and Technologies is a multilateral export control regime.

India today joined the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR) as a full member and said its entry would be mutually beneficial to enhance global non-proliferation norms. 
 
Marking India&#39;s first entry into a multilateral export-control regime, foreign secretary S Jaishankar signed the instrument of accession to the MTCR in the presence of France&#39;s Ambassador-designate Alexandre Ziegler, The Netherlands&#39; Ambassador Alphonsus Stoelinga and Luxembourg&#39;s Charge d&#39;Affaires Laure Huberty. 
 
&quot;India has joined the MTCR this morning... India&#39;s entry into the regime as its thirty-fifth member would be mutually beneficial in the furtherance of international non-proliferation objectives,&quot; the foreign ministry said in a statement. 
 
&quot;India would like to thank each of the thirty-four MTCR Partners for their support for India&#39;s membership. We would also like to thank Ambassador Pieter de Klerk of The Netherlands and Mr Robert Steinmetz of Luxembourg, co-Chairs of the MTCR,&quot; the statement said. 
 
The MTCR Point of Contact in Paris has conveyed the decision regarding India&#39;s accession to the regime through the French Embassy in New Delhi as well as the Embassies of The Netherlands and Luxembourg, it said. 
 
India&#39;s entry into MTCR comes days after it failed to get NSG membership due to stiff opposition from China and a few other countries. 
 
Significantly, China, which stonewalled India&#39;s entry into the 48-nation Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) at the just-concluded Seoul plenary, is not a member of MTCR. 
 
Since its civil nuclear deal with the US, India has been trying to get into export control regimes like NSG, MTCR, the Australia Group and the Wassenaar Arrangement that regulate the conventional, nuclear, biological and chemicals weapons and technologies. 
 
MTCR membership will now enable India to buy high-end missile technology and also enhance its joint ventures with Russia. 
 
The aim of the MTCR is to restrict the proliferation of missiles, complete rocket systems, unmanned air vehicles and related technology for those systems capable of carrying a 500 kilogramme payload for at least 300 kilometres, as well as systems intended for the delivery of weapons of mass destruction (WMD).
