In a rare and tragic incident, a mountain lion attack has claimed the life of a man in California, marking the state's first fatal incident in around two decades.

The attack occurred as two brothers, aged 18 and 21, were&nbsp;hunting in the Georgetown area. The younger brother made a frantic call to the authorities&nbsp;at approximately 1:13 pm&nbsp;last Saturday, reporting the attack on himself and his brother.

According to reports, the 21-year-old brother became separated from his sibling during the attack, prompting a search by authorities. They located him about half an hour after the initial 911 call.

According to the sheriff's news release, the caller suffered "traumatic injuries" to his face during the attack.

"The mountain lion was between the deputies and the subject on the ground," the sheriff's office said in the release on Facebook talking about the moment they located the older brother.

Deputies on the scene discharged their firearms to scare off the mountain lion so they could provide medical assistance. However, upon reaching the victim, they tragically discovered that the 21-year-old had succumbed to his injuries.
