<p>Former defence minister George Fernandes died Tuesday morning at the age of 88. The news was broken by his family.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Fernandes had been unwell for some time. He had been suffering from Alzheimer's and PTI reported his family as saying he had recently contracted swine flu.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Fernandes served as defence minister from 1998 to 2004 in the NDA government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee government. As defence minister, he oversaw India's 1998 nuclear tests at Pokhran, Rajasthan and the limited war India fought against Pakistan in Kargil, Jammu and Kashmir in 1999.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>Former Samata Party president Jaya Jaitley said Tuesday that Fernandes's last rites will be performed on Wednesday.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"He had expressed his wished earlier to be cremated but during his last days, he said he wanted to be buried. So, we will cremate the body and bury the ashes, to fulfil both his wishes," she added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Fernades was born in Mangalore, Karnataka.&nbsp;He had at one time been training to become a priest before moving to trade union politics.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He went on to found the Samata Party.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Fernandes also served as railway minister in the VP Singh government from 1989 to 1990.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Fernandes stepped down as Vajpayee's defence minister in 2004 after the "coffin gate" scandal broke out. He was however later absolved by two commissions of inquiry.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Tehelka scandal also cast a long shadow over his term in office.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Fernandes's death was condoled Tuesday by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Drawing a parallel between present day's political environment and the one that existed during 1977, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar said a united opposition, just like 40 years ago, can take on the might of a single party.</p>

<p>"In 1977, the downfall of one party started, and at one point, the government collapsed. A similar situation can be a possibility now if the opposition comes together," Sharad Pawar told media persons here.</p>

<p>The ruling Congress lost the general election in 1977, held just after the removal of nearly two-year-long Emergency.</p>

<p>Morarji Desai-led coalition won that election and remained in power until 1980.</p>

<p>The NCP supremo's comments came days after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lost bye-elections in Kairana and Noorpur seats in Uttar Pradesh.</p>

<p>The Lok Sabha Kairana seat was won by Rashtriya Lok Dal's candidate, Tabassum Hasan, supported by the joint opposition, while Noorpur assembly seat was taken away by the Samajwadi Party.</p>

<p>The opposition parties have already indicated its intention and displayed strength when the likes of Congress' Rahul Gandhi, SP's Akhilesh Yadav and Trinamool Congress' Mamata Banerjee among others came together for the swearing-in of Janata Dal (Secular) leader HD Kumaraswamy in Karnataka last month.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a fresh crackdown on black money, the government is mulling over an ordinance that will seek to impose fines on people in possession of banned Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes beyond December 30.</p>

<p>The maximum number of banned notes one can possess regardless of denomination will be 10.</p>

<p>The transfer of over Rs 10,000 in old notes may even result in a punishment and a minimum fine of Rs 50,000 or five times the amount in question, whichever is higher.</p>

<p>Violations of the rule will carry a criminal liability and municipal magistrates will hear cases on violations, said the NDTV report.</p>

<p>However, there was no official word on the act which is likely to come up before the Cabinet on Wednesday.</p>

<p>The ordinance may extinguish the liability of the government and RBI towards the promise to pay the bearer of these notes their value because of a statutory requirement.</p>

<p>In 1978, a similar ordinance was issued to end the government&#39;s liability after Rs 1,000, Rs 5,000 and Rs 10,000 notes were demonetised by the Janata Party government under Morarji Desai.</p>

<p>The ordinance also includes recommendations of the central board of directors of the RBI.</p>

<p>The period to deposit old notes in banks ends on December 30, after which the banned notes have to be directly deposited in the RBI.</p>

<p>The RBI had earlier this month issued an order stating that an amount exceeding Rs 5000 in demonetised notes cannot be deposited in the banks more than once till December 30.</p>

<p>But later, the order was withdrawn.</p>

<p>To flush out black money from the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had banned 500 and 1,000 rupee notes on November 8.</p>
