The Delhi High Court Monday allowed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to file a closure report in the case of JNU student Najeeb Ahmed, who went missing from the university nearly two years ago.

A bench of justices S Muralidhar and Vinod Goel "declined" the plea of the missing student's mother, Fatima Nafees, to constitute a Special Investigation Team (SIT) and monitor the probe, thereby removing the CBI from the investigation.

The bench said Nafees, who had moved the high court in November 2016 seeking directions to the police to trace her son, "can raise all contentions available to her before the trial court" and disposed of the plea.

The court had reserved its verdict in the case on September 4.

The CBI, which had taken over the probe on May 16 last year, had after more than a year of investigation said it had looked into all the aspects of the case and was of the opinion that no offence was committed against the missing student.

Ahmed had gone missing from the Mahi-Mandvi hostel of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) here on October 15, 2016, following a scuffle with some students allegedly affiliated to the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) the previous night.

The lawyer for Nafees had contended before the court that it was a "political case" and that the "CBI has succumbed to the pressure of its masters".

Nafees had moved the high court on November 25, 2016, seeking directions to the police to trace her son.

However, as the Delhi Police remained clueless about Ahmed's whereabouts even after seven months since he went missing, the probe was handed over to the CBI on May 16 last year.

The Delhi Police had not opposed the handing over of the investigation in the case, saying it had done its bit in the matter.

The counsel for Nafees had earlier said nine students were named in a complaint filed by 18 students, who were eyewitnesses to the alleged assault on Ahmed, yet they were not interrogated.

The nine students named in the complaint have denied all the allegations against them.&nbsp;

The sniffer dogs failed to make any headway and stopped after circling around in the hostel where he stayed

More than six hundred Delhi Police personnel assisted by sniffer dogs scanned the Jawaharlal Nehru University campus on Monday to search for clues that could help them trace missing student Najeeb Ahmed, news agency Press Trust of India reported. Najeeb has been missing for more than two months now. The police began their search around 11 am under the supervision of DCP (Crime Branch) G Ram Gopal Naik, PTI reports. The sniffer dogs failed to make any headway and stopped after circling around in the hostel where Najeeb stayed. About 65-70 per cent of the campus was covered today and rest including the residential areas and the interiors of the campus will be scanned tomorrow, a senior police officer was quoted as saying by PTI. Najeeb's mother Fatima Nafees who was present at the hostel termed the police search "too late" and "futile", according to PTI. "They should have carried out this search immediately after Najeeb went missing. But now, it's of no use. I appeal to police to bring back my son and I will take him home from here," she told PTI. Najeeb went missing on October 15 following an on-campus scuffle allegedly with ABVP members the night before. The search follows an order by the Delhi High Court last week to scan the entire campus, including hostels, classrooms and rooftops, of the buildings with help of sniffer dogs. Police on Sunday detained the mother and sister, along with scores of angry students, of missing Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Najeeb Ahmed during a protest march to India Gate in the Indian capital Delhi.&nbsp;

Najeeb&#39;s mother, Fatima Nafees, was allegedly dragged (see picture) into a bus by Delhi police, PTI reported.&nbsp;

Najeeb Ahmed, a 27-year-old student of the School of Biotechnology in JNU, went missing on October 15 after an alleged on-campus altercation with members of the Akhil Bharatiya&nbsp; 
Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of India&#39;s ruling BJP party.

We were protesting very peacefully but the Delhi Police detained us without any reason,&quot; Najeeb&#39;s sister Sadaf Mosharraf told PTI.&nbsp;

Both mother and daughter were later released.&nbsp;

The police denied manhandling the protesters, saying all their actions were&nbsp;&quot;within the frameworks of law&quot;.&nbsp;

&quot;No one has been manhandled and no force has been used against anyone. Adequate male and female police was there. Within the parameters of law we handled the entire situation,&quot; southwest Delhi joint commissioner of police Deependra Pathak told PTI.

He added that a few protesters, including Najeeb&#39;s mother, were taken to a police station but that they were later sent home.

Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal condemned the police action, and submitted a memorandum about the &quot;worrisome situation&quot; in the country to President Pranab Mukherjee.&nbsp;

The President reportedly also assured Kejriwal that he would be seeking a report on the disappearance from the interior ministry and the JNU administration.
