In a scary mid-air incident, lightning hit a Delta plane which was flying above the Atlantic Ocean on Sunday (Aug&nbsp;4) and led to the plane’s return to Boston, said the airline and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The FAA said that Delta Flight 112 had taken off from Logan International Airport on Sunday evening (Aug&nbsp;4) and was flying to Rome when the flight crew said that the plane had been struck by lightning after the departure.&nbsp;

After crossing the Atlantic, the aircraft turned around and changed the route of what was earlier a seven-hour flight to the Italian city, as per Flightradar24.

The plane went back to Logan Airport “out of an abundance of caution after encountering lighting,” said a Delta spokesperson, in an email.

After Airbus A330 landed at the airport at around 7:20 pm, it was surrounded by fire trucks on the tarmac, reported WCVB.

Boston EMS said no medical help was needed for any passengers or crew. “The flight landed safely and without further incident,” said the Delta spokesperson.&nbsp;

Following standard Safety procedures, the Pilots declared an emergency prior to landing. The flight landed without incident and taxied off the runway. A separate aircraft operated the scheduled flight to Phoenix."

The airline in the statement further thanked its flight crew for "their professionalism" and its customers for "their patience".

Passenger Julianna Donadio, who is a Boulder resident, said that it was a scary scene aboard the flight after they heard a loud and frightening noise as the tire blew during the takeoff.

"We knew we blew a tyre, but we didn’t know what the landing gear situation was," said Donadio, while speaking to KDVR.

Donadio stated that the passengers were informed by the flight attendants that an emergency landing would happen and "we started to panic a little bit".

"When the flight attendants said we were going to have an emergency landing, we started to panic a little bit. People were definitely crying and screaming and trying to console one another. When we landed everyone was cheering and clapping," she added.&nbsp;

“They started preparing us for crash position, so having our head between our knees, and they were informing the emergency exit line how to open the doors and operate potentially the slides," the passenger further said.&nbsp;
