New York's Metropolitan Opera said Wednesday it will demand that all musicians and audiences have received a booster dose of the Covid-19 vaccine, as the contagious Omicron variant spreads.

With 3,000 people employed every day, from the orchestra to the technical teams, "our population is far larger than any other not-for-profit performing arts organization in the country, which is why we have to be in the vanguard of health and safety," said Peter Gelb, the Met's general manager.

The opera had to close for a year and a half because of the pandemic, which hit New York City hard and early. That set the prestigious institution up for financial difficulties, and it had to engage in protracted negotiations with workers to agree on wage cuts. Brands from Ferrari to Nike rush toward 'metaverse' future

The opera house, in Manhattan's Lincoln Center, had already imposed vaccine mandates for workers and the general public for its reopening on September 27.

Since then, 160,000 spectators have been attended 59 performances.

The booster dose will be required from January 17 for those who are eligible, meaning those who received their second shot of either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine, or one shot of the Johnson & Johnson, at least six months ago.

"We want everyone who enters our opera house to feel safe," said Gelb. Food smelling like 'garbage' post COVID-19 recovery? You may be suffering from parosmia

"Those not yet eligible will be able to continue to enter, but must receive the booster shot shortly after they become eligible," the Met said in a statement.

The Met said it was following the recommendations of the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC), which is predicting a rise in infections due to the spread of the Omicron variant.

The announcement came as the death toll from Covid-19 in the United States topped 800,000. In New York, 71 people died in the previous 24 hours, according to official figures.

New York's Met Opera demands boosters for musicians, public

New York's Metropolitan Opera will require audiences and performers to be fully vaccinated for its upcoming season, the house announced Tuesday amid debate in the United States about mandatory vaccinations.

The Met said all customers, staff and members of its orchestra and chorus will need to show proof of vaccination against Covid-19 for performances in the 2021–22 season.

"The Met will be a fully vaccinated house," the prestigious institution said in an email sent to patrons.

Children under the age of 12, a group currently ineligible for vaccines, will not be allowed to enter the Met even if the adults accompanying them are vaccinated.

The announcement comes as parts of the United States move towards vaccine mandates due to fears over rising cases caused by the Delta variant.

California and New York City announced Monday that public sector workers would need to get vaccinated or take weekly tests.

The US Department of Veterans Affairs became the first federal agency to impose a mandate when it announced this week it would require more than 100,000 health care personnel to get Covid-19 vaccines.

New York officials said Tuesday that proof of vaccination would also be required for a concert on August 21 in Central Park to celebrate the city's post-Covid reopening, with Bruce Springsteen, Andrea Bocelli and Paul Simon slated to be among the performers.

Broadway -- due to fully return in September -- has not issued a general vaccine mandate, but two shows, "Springsteen on Broadway" and "Pass Over," have announced that audiences must be vaccinated.

The Met employs more than 3,000 staffers, the largest performing arts organization in the United States.

It has been closed since the coronavirus broke out in New York in March 2020 and is hoping to open at the end of September.

During the shutdown, the institution was rocked by labor tensions over proposed wage cuts.

Tentative agreements with unions representing its chorus and stagehands have been reached in recent weeks.

New York's Met Opera mandates vaccines for new season

The Metropolitan Opera canceled its fall 2020 performances on Monday and postponed several new productions to future seasons as the coronavirus continues to wreak havoc with New York's cultural life.

The storied opera house, which has been dark since mid-March because of the health crisis, said it still planned to go ahead with an abbreviated season to start December 31 instead of September.

"Given the enormous organizational complexity of the Met's schedule, we have no choice but to cancel our fall season," General Manager Peter Gelb said.

"The health and safety of our company members and our audience is our top priority, and it is simply not feasible to return to the opera house for a September opening while social distancing remains a requirement."

The announcement comes a week before New York City is slated to begin its "phase one" reopening following a near-total shutdown of most non-essential activities as the city implemented social distancing protocols to limit the spread of the coronavirus.

The first phase permits manufacturers, wholesale suppliers and some retailers to resume operations with restrictions.

However, live performances are not permitted until "phase four" of the New York State plan, for which there is still no timetable.

The Met's truncated schedule means it won't stage a new production of Verdi's "Aida" scheduled to open the season, or a premiere of Prokofiev's "The Fiery Angel."

Those new productions will be performed in future seasons, the company said. The Met will also postpone new productions of two Mozart operas, "The Magic Flute" and "Don Giovanni," and will instead present revivals of the pieces in the 2020-21 season.

The opera house still intends to go ahead with the April 2021 premiere of the modern work "Dead Man Walking" by Jake Heggie.

The Met also announced other tweaks to its plans, including shortening some performances and moving up the curtain time to earlier in the evening when possible.
