Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni feels leaking runs in the Powerplay and at the death overs eventually put pressure on his team as CSK lost to Rajasthan Royals for the second time in IPL 2023 in Jaipur on Thursday. Dhoni, whose side was on a winning spree before this game, even praised RR’s opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, who scored a brilliant 77 and talked highly of young Matheesha Pathirana for his superb show with the ball in hand.

Rajasthan batted first, and the attacking pair of Jaiswal and Buttler made most of the conditions, hitting 86 for the first wicket, with most of the runs coming in the Powerplay overs – something MS Dhoni also addressed in the post-match presentation.

While Chennai made a comeback in the middle overs, picking up wickets and halting Rajasthan’s momentum, Dhurv Jurel and Devdutt Padikkal put their foot on the gas and helped RR breach the 200-run-mark in Jaipur for the first time in IPL history.

"It was quite a bit above par score. The reason was the first six overs, we gave away too many in the first six. At the same time, the wicket was best to bat on at that period. Then our bowlers bowled well in the middle overs but even when we were finishing, there were a few edges that went for boundaries and that actually kept adding to the score. If I just go through it, maybe there were at least five or six boundaries with edges and that had a very big impact on the score. I think they got a par-plus score and we were not able to get a good start in the first six overs," MS Dhoni said during the post-match presser.

CSK’s x-factor, Matheesha Pathirana, went for 48 runs in his four overs, including 33 from the two overs he bowled in death; however, Dhoni feels despite these numbers, the young Sri Lankan was right on top of his game and bowled well instead.

"You have to accept it because you don't look at the scorecard. What you are looking at is how the ball was delivered, where it was and where the boundary went. These things help you take better decisions and I felt his bowling was very good, it was not like he bowled badly. Yes, there will be a few deliveries where the batsmen will play the big shot but other than that I think the scorecard doesn't really reflect how well he bowled," the CSK captain added.

On the other hand, he also praised young left-handed Jaiswal, who played beautiful shots and kept the scoring rate above run-a-ball throughout his innings. MS added Yashasvi calculated the risks very well.

"Yashasvi batted really well, it was important to go after the bowlers, and I think he took calculated risks. It felt it was slightly easy with our bowlers because they had to assess as to what is a good length to bowl. As a captain, you can tell them initially that you want to be slightly on the shorter side," Dhoni said while praising young Jaiswal.

Meanwhile, despite Chennai losing to RR for the second time this season, they remain in the top three with five wins from eight matches. They will next take on Punjab Kings at home on Sunday.

IPL 2023: MS Dhoni praises Yashasvi Jaiswal, Matheesha Pathirana; laments leaking runs in PP and death overs

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain MS Dhoni heaped praise on Sri Lankan pacer Matheesha Pathirana after his impressive show for the franchise in his debut season. Pathirana was roped in by CSK as a replacement for injured Adam Milne midway through the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 and has since managed to play two matches for the franchise.

Dubbed as the 'Baby Malinga' for his slingy action which resembles former Sri Lankan pacer Lasith Malinga, Pathirana got off to a dream start in his IPL career. He picked up a wicket off the very first ball he bowled for CSK in their clash against Gujarat Titans. The Sri Lankan youngster dismissed GT skipper Hardik Pandya on the very first ball of his first over.

He picked up two wickets while conceding 24 runs in 3.1 overs against Gujarat Titans and also featured in CSK's final game of the season against Rajasthan Royals on Friday (May 20). Though he went wicketless, Pathirana was lauded by Dhoni, who believes he is going to have a bright future for CSK in the IPL.

"Our Malinga (Pathirana) is really good. It is difficult to pick him and he'll only definitely contribute next year...in a big way," said Dhoni speaking about Pathirana after his side's loss against Rajasthan Royals on Friday.

Talking about the game, CSK won the toss and opted to bat first against the Royals at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. They got off to a shaky start losing opener Ruturaj Gaikwad (2) cheaply before losing Devon Conway (16) early as well. However, Moeen Ali's brilliant 93 off 57 balls helped them put up 150 runs on the board in 20 overs as other batters failed to deliver.

RR chased down the target comfortably with two balls to spare riding comfortably on crucial knocks from Yashasvi Jaiswal (59) and R Ashwin (40). With the win, RR moved to the second spot on the points table while CSK, who are already out of the playoffs are at the 9th spot on the table.

'Our Malinga': MS Dhoni heaps praise on Matheesha Pathirana, says he will contribute for CSK in a big way

Defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Thursday announced that they have signed Sri Lanka pacer Matheesha Pathirana as a replacement for New Zealand quick Adam Milne for the remainder of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 season, said a release by IPL.

Milne`s journey in IPL 2022 has been cut short after suffering a hamstring injury in CSK`s first match against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on March 26, where he returned figures of 0/19 in 2.3 overs and has now been ruled out for the rest of the tournament.

Pathirana, called `Junior Lasith Malinga` in Sri Lanka`s cricketing circles due to resemblance of his slingy side-on action with the pace great and accuracy of bowling yorkers, is a young 19-year-old right-arm medium pacer from Kandy.

He was a part of Sri Lanka`s U19 World Cup squads in the 2020 and 2022 editions. In the 2022 Men`s U19 World Cup in the West Indies, Pathirana picked seven wickets in four matches at an average of 27.28 and economy rate of 6.16.

He will join CSK at the price of INR 20 Lakh and becomes the sixth Sri Lanka player to be a part of IPL 2022. Pathirana is no stranger to CSK as he was roped in by the franchise as a reserve player in 2021 season and has played one List A match apart from two T20s at the senior cricket level.

CSK are currently at ninth place on the points table, with only one win from six matches and will face Mumbai Indians in an `El Clasico` clash at the DY Patil Stadium on Thursday, seeking just their second win of the tournament.
