During the first quarter of the current fiscal year, the demand for passenger vehicles (PVs) experienced a degree of suppression, primarily attributed to two significant factors: the prevailing heat wave and the occurrence of elections. These circumstances resulted in a notable reduction in footfall at showrooms, as many potential customers opted to stay away. This insight was shared by Rahul Bharti, who holds the position of Executive Director for Corporate Affairs at Maruti Suzuki, during a statement made on Wednesday.

As a consequence of these measures, despite the less than favourable market conditions, we were able to achieve retail sales that were nearly equivalent to those of the preceding quarter."

Furthermore, Bharti noted the presence of a segment of customers who might be deliberately postponing their purchases, potentially waiting for the festive season or what they consider to be more auspicious occasions to make their automotive investments. To put these efforts into perspective, it's worth noting that Maruti Suzuki's average discounts during the April-June 2024 quarter reached INR 21,700 per vehicle. Maruti Suzuki to focus on improving retail sales

The country's largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India on Wednesday reported first ever quarterly loss since becoming public 17 years back with a consolidated net loss of Rs 268.3 crore for the first quarter ended June 30, hit hard by coronavirus pandemic.

The auto major, which got listed way back in July 2003, had posted a consolidated net profit of Rs 1,376.8 crore in the April-June quarter of 2019-20.

Net sales declined to Rs 3,679 crore in the first quarter as against Rs 18,738.8 crore in the year-ago period, MSI said in a statement.

On a standalone basis, the company reported a net loss of Rs 249.4 crore for the first quarter ended June 30.

It had posted net profit of Rs 1,435.5 crore on standalone basis in April-June of 2019-20.

The auto major's net sales during the period under review declined to Rs 3,677.5 crore, as compared to Rs 18,735.2 crore in the year-ago period.

During the first quarter, MSI sold a total of 76,599 vehicles. Sales in the domestic market stood at 67,027 units, while exports were at 9,572 units.

The company had sold 4,02,594 units in the first quarter previous fiscal.

"Owing to the global pandemic of COVID-19, it was an unprecedented quarter in the company's history wherein a large part of the quarter had zero production and zero sales in compliance with a lockdown stipulated by the government," MSI said.

Production and sales started in a very small way in May, it added.

The company's first priority was health, safety and wellbeing of all employees and associates across the value chain, including its customers, the auto major said.

"Hence, with carefully designed safety protocols, which went far beyond compliance levels, the production in the whole Quarter was equivalent to just about two weeks' of regular working. The results have to be viewed in this context," it noted.

MSI stock ended 1.62 per cent down at Rs 6,185.6 on the BSE on Wednesday.

Maruti’s wholesales from April to October 2019 fell 20.4 per cent&nbsp;to 958,373 vehicles. The increase in vehicle production in November follows a 4.5 per cent&nbsp;year-on-year growth in wholesales&nbsp;or industry dispatches&nbsp;of Maruti in October to 144,277 units.

This was the first increase in seven months for the company thanks to a high level of discounts across most of its product range.&nbsp; In November, however, Maruti's wholesales declined 3.2 per cent&nbsp;year-on-year to 141,400 units.

Japanese auto major Toyota on Thursday launched its premium hatchback Glanza in India. The car is Toyota's version of Suzuki's Baleno, which it is sourcing from its compatriot as part of their collaboration.

The Glanza has been tagged at an introductory price ranging from Rs 7.22 lakh to Rs 8.9 lakh.

Toyota, which is present in India through a joint venture with the Kirloskar group (Toyota Kirloskar Motors or TKM), is offering the Glanza only in two variants in 1.2 litre petrol engine with automatic transmission options. The variants are equipped with a new BS-VI compliant 'K-series' petrol engines.

Maruti Suzuki currently sells its Baleno in both petrol and diesel engine options with four different variants with automatic transmission options priced between Rs 5.46 lakh to Rs 8.9 lakh.

Commenting on the launch, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) Managing Director Masakazu Yoshimura said, "In a dynamic market like India, it will be our constant endeavour to offer a range of options to our customers whose choices are governed by their mobility needs and expectations from brand."

TKM is offering warranty of 3 years/1 lakh kilometres that can be extended up to 5 years/2.2 lakh km.

The Glanza comes equipped with features such as touchscreen audio with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay for smart phone based navigation.

In March this year, Toyota and Suzuki expanded scope of collaboration including manufacturing of Suzuki-developed compact SUV Vitara Brezza at Toyota's plant in India from 2022.

The two companies had also stated that they were considering a concrete collaboration in new fields that would include Suzuki supplying its Ciaz sedan and Ertiga multi-purpose vehicle to Toyota in India in addition to the already agreed supplies of premium hatchback Baleno and compact SUV Vitara Brezza.

The two partners had also agreed to extend their collaboration to Europe and Africa over and above their partnership in India. Suzuki will supply its India-produced vehicles - Baleno, Vitara Brezza, Ciaz, Ertiga - to Toyota for the African market as well.

Toyota Glanza: Variants, price and features of the premium hatchback

The country's largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) said on Thursday that it will phase out smaller diesel cars from its portfolio with effect from April 1, 2020.

The cars are set to get costlier with the upcoming BS-VI emission norms from April next year.

"March 31, 2020 is the last date to sell and register a BS-IV vehicle. From April 1, 2020, the company will not sell any diesel vehicle apart from 1500 cc engine. Any diesel engines below 1500 cc will not make any economic sense once BS-VI norms kick in," the company said in a statement.

The auto major currently sells various cars with diesel powertrains, including S-Cross, Ciaz, Vitara Brezza, Dzire, Baleno, and Swift. While the bigger cars are likely to continue, the carmaker is expected to pull the plug on small diesel cars in its portfolio.

MSI's recently launched refreshed Baleno is the only car which falls under sub-1500 cc category.

"We will not make diesel cars which we feel the customers will not be able to afford. It all depends on the customer, what his judgement is, what the customer will buy or not buy," MSI Chairman R C Bhargava said.

Bhargava said smaller diesel cars would become expensive and thus out of reach for entry-level customers. He added that the small car market would move towards petrol and compressed natural gas (CNG).

Adverse foreign exchange rates and commodity prices pulled down Maruti Suzuki's net profit during the fourth quarter ended March 31 by 4.6 per cent to Rs 1,796 crore in the year-on period. Total sales slipped by 0.7 per cent at 458,479 vehicles.

Currently MSI's market share hovers around 51 per cent in the domestic passenger vehicle segment.

The company currently gets nearly 30 per cent of its annual sales from diesel cars. In 2018-19, MSI sold a total of 17,53,700 units in the domestic market.

The Bharat Stage VI (BS-VI) emission norms would come into force from April 1, 2020, across the country. The shift would impact diesel cars more in terms of prices with industry experts expecting the prices of such models to go up by about Rs 2 lakh.

Bhargava said smaller diesel cars would become expensive and thus out of reach for entry-level customers. He added that the small car market would move towards petrol and compressed natural gas (CNG). Adverse foreign exchange rates and commodity prices pulled down Maruti Suzuki's net profit during the fourth quarter ended March 31 by 4.6 per cent to Rs 1,796 crore in the year-on period. Total sales slipped by 0.7 per cent at 458,479 vehicles. Currently MSI's market share hovers around 51 per cent in the domestic passenger vehicle segment. The company currently gets nearly 30 per cent of its annual sales from diesel cars. In 2018-19, MSI sold a total of 17,53,700 units in the domestic market. The Bharat Stage VI (BS-VI) emission norms would come into force from April 1, 2020, across the country. The shift would impact diesel cars more in terms of prices with industry experts expecting the prices of such models to go up by about Rs 2 lakh. (With inputs from agencies)

Maruti to phase out smaller diesel cars by April 1, 2020

Country&#39;s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) on Wednesday said it has increased prices of its models by up to Rs 17,000 in order to partially offset rise in input costs.

In a regulatory filing, it said the hike will range between Rs 1,700 and Rs 17,000 across models owing to increase in commodity, administrative and distribution costs.

MSI sells a range of models starting with hatchback Alto 800 to premium crossover S-Cross, priced between Rs 2.45 lakh and Rs 11.29 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

The company had said last month that it will take a price increase from this month. Maruti recently entered the club of top-five most valued companies list

Tata Motors has already increased prices of its vehicles by up to Rs 25,000 from January 1.

Various automakers including, Hyundai Motor India, Honda Cars, Mahindra &amp; Mahindra have already announced to increase prices from this month.

These companies are however yet to announce price increase for their respective vehicles.
