England pacer and Ashes hero Mark Wood has announced his international retirement after losing battles to injuries that marred his career. At 36, Wood won it all: a home Ashes (2015), an ODI World Cup (2019) and the T20 World Cup in Australia in 2022, and will always be remembered as the fastest England bowler of all time. In 146 international matches, Wood picked up 253 wickets, including 119 in 38 Tests at 30.79.

After injuring his knee midway through the 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan, Wood featured in only one match: the away Ashes opener in November last year, which was also his final appearance in international cricket. Wood remains active in franchise leagues worldwide and would like to feature for Durham in the T20 Blast next. He also enjoys his time working as a media professional.

Taking to his social media handles on Tuesday morning, hours before England’s ODI series opener against Sri Lanka in Durham, Wood announced his decision to step aside from England Cricket.

Also read| Asian Games 2026: India beat Sri Lanka in final to defend women's cricket gold

Battling injuries over the years, Wood explained how he felt since last featuring for England almost a year ago.

"It's been a long time since Perth, in November, my last game, so it's been a year-and-a-half where it's just ground me down to thinking, 'Look, I'm never going to get back to this level,” Wood said in an interview with Sky Sports.

“My contract ends in September, and I think it just feels like the right time. I never wanted to give up [playing for] England, but the lads that are coming through are doing a fantastic job. The news should be about the lads that are going to get their contract, and I can just focus on other things.”

Want to be Remembered as a ‘Great Teammate’

When asked how he wanted to be remembered, England’s express pacer said he would like it if people remember him for being someone who gave it all for the team and was cherished by his teammates. Revealing his favourite memories, Wood shied away from naming any on-field moments, picking behind-the-scenes memories instead.

"My best memories are with the lads - not moments that I've had, which I do cherish myself - but I think of times when I've done things with the guys like quiz nights in the team room, and seeing my family and friends up at The Oval when we've won the Ashes. It's as much for them as me.

"I'd love to just be remembered for being great amongst the lads in the dressing room, a great team-mate, and someone that tried their absolute best all the time - and that should be a given when you're playing for England.

"I really hope that they thought that I was resilient; I kept putting it in when I needed to - not necessarily just when I wanted to, but when everybody needed us to. I think that's what I'd most like to be remembered by: not by cricketing stats or things like that, more by the person I was and the type of cricketer I was really. And I could bowl fast!” Wood continued.

‘This time I lost the battle’: England Ashes hero Mark Wood retires from international cricket

Ace England seamer Mark Wood got ruled out of the upcoming Test tours of Pakistan and New Zealand due to a bone-stress injury to his left elbow. The premier fast bowler withdrew from the ongoing Test series against Sri Lanka on precautionary grounds after suffering a right thigh strain during the first Test in Old Trafford. He, however, underwent a routine elbow scan, and following feeling discomfort in his joints, took to his Instagram handle to announce receiving some ‘pretty rubbish news’.

"During what I thought was routine check on a previously troublesome elbow, I was shocked to learn I've got some bone stress in my right elbow," Wood wrote on his social media handle.

"After the minor groin injury at Emirates Old Trafford, me and the medical team felt it was a good time to get my elbow looked at as it was a bit irritated," Wood added in his Instagram post. "I'd put that down to the normal niggles every fast bowler gets and which I was playing through.

"I'm especially surprised because I've been playing Test cricket and kept my speeds up.

"I work incredibly hard on my fitness, putting in extra work with coaches and physios making this even more disappointing. However, I guess this is, 'part of being a fast bowler', like Stokesy says.

"I will miss the rest of the year needing time to rest and build up, fully expecting to be back and firing in early 2025. I have been down this path before and will put in all the hard yards behind the scenes. I am very proud to represent my country and there is no better feeling. See you for some rockets in 2025!"

Wood to return with rockets

As a result, the right-arm seamer will miss England’s final six Tests this year – three against Pakistan in October and New Zealand in December. In the meantime, Wood will continue working with the ECB’s medical staff to prepare and be ready for the next ICC event – the Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan in February-March.

In Wood’s absence, England recalled seamer Olly Stone in the XI for the second Test against SL at Lord’s, and left-arm quick uncapped Josh Hull made his international debut in the ongoing third Test at The Kia Oval.

Meanwhile, England would want to have fully fit Wood available for the next year, which includes the Champions Trophy, WTC Final (should England qualify for the final), home five-match Test series against India and an away Ashes.

See you for some rockets in 2025!" Blow to England as Mark Wood ruled out of Pakistan, New Zealand tours with elbow injury

Mark Wood has been ruled out of this week's third Test with India dealing a blow to the hosts' hopes of levelling the five-match series which the tourists lead 1-0.

The 31-year-old has a jarred right shoulder, a result of diving headlong into an advertising hoarding when saving a boundary on the fourth evening of the second Test at Lord's.

Even though he bowled at speeds in excess of 93 mph (150 kph) on the last day of the second Test, which England lost, he has been judged not fit to take his place in the starting line-up for the game at Headingley, which gets underway on Wednesday.
