Aberg's runner-up finish at Augusta National, where he made his major championship debut, was the best by a Swede at the Masters.

In his most recent start, at the RBC Heritage on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, Aberg earned his fifth top-10 finish of the year.

World number one Scottie Scheffler finished with back-to-back birdies to hold a share of the lead after the second round of the PGA Tour Pebble Beach Pro-Am on Friday.&nbsp;

Scheffler shot a bogey-free, eight-under-par round of 64 to share top spot on the leaderboard at 11-under with Belgian Thomas Detry and Sweden's Ludvig Aberg.

The American sank a 35-footer to make birdie on the par-3 17th and then followed up with an aggressive approach on the par-5 18th.

"Boring is always nice on the card, keeping a clean card is good," said Scheffler of his avoidance of bogeys on the historic Californian course.

"I felt like I didn't have to struggle for many pars. I kept the golf course in front of me, made some nice puts and hit some quality shots into the greens. I just gave myself a lot of opportunities," he said.

"I did not realize how much it rained overnight. It was really wet. So like on a lot of these back-to-front greens it's a big adjustment going from hitting a pitching wedge to hitting an 8-iron to try to take off spin," he added.

The soft, wet course encouraged players to attack the greens and Aberg certainly took that approach, following up a birdie on the first with an eagle on the par-5 second.

After a thumping 302-yard drive, the 24-year-old landed his approach 35 feet from the hole and sank his putt superbly.

Aberg was outstanding on the greens as he reached the turn on five-under and he added two more birdies on the back nine on the 11th and 14th.

"Obviously got off to a nice start with a couple of long putts, I don't remember the last time I did that, so obviously that's a little bonus. I felt like I kept playing quite well and kept being disciplined, so it was nice," said the Swede.

Aberg, who played college golf in the USA for Texas Tech and turned pro in June, picked up his first win on the PGA Tour in November at the RSM Classic, following up his win on the DP World Tour in Switzerland in September.

That month he grabbed global attention with his excellent performance in Europe's Ryder Cup win over the United States in Italy.

Aberg said he would draw on those experiences as he searches for his second PGA Tour victory.

"I think any time that you get to win a tournament and feel those emotions coming on the last couple holes and being in the lead and trying to chase down the lead, there's always a lot that you can learn from that," he said.

"I don't try to get too high, not too low, and obviously the experiences that I had last year was a lot of good ones, try to keep building on that and see where that takes us over the weekend," he said.

Overnight leader Detry teed off on 10 and was three-under at the turn but was undone by bogeys on the fourth and fifth as he carded a two-under 70.

"I know my game is really solid, I've been playing some really good golf now for the last couple years, so all I have to do is really trust it and keep building on all these good rounds that I've done under pressure," said the Belgian, who challenged last week at Torrey Pines before a disappointing final two rounds.

Patrick Cantlay recovered from driving out of bounds on the 18th to make par and finish a stroke behind the leading trio after his two-under 70.

American Justin Thomas, who shot a five-under 67, Argentine Emiliano Grillo and France's Matthieu Pavon -- coming off his historic victory at Torrey Pines on Sunday -- were all two shots off the lead.

Viktor Hovland and Ludvig Aberg led Europe's charge towards Ryder Cup glory on Saturday as the event's biggest ever foursomes win contributed to a 9.5-2.5 third-session lead over the shellshocked USA in Rome.

Captain Luke Donald said on Friday he wants a "historic week" from Europe, gunning to reclaim the Ryder Cup lost in a record 19-9 thrashing two years ago at the hands of the USA, who are trying to win on this side of the Atlantic for the first time since 1993.

And his team have already delivered that at the Marco Simone course in Rome with Hovland and Aberg's 9 and 7 destruction of Scottie Scheffler and Brooks Koepka, the only player in the field from the Saudi Arabia-backed rebel LIV Golf circuit.

The Scandinavian pair steamrollered Scheffler and Koepka in the sort of display which Donald would have been dreaming of before his team arrived for work with the Eternal city still enveloped in darkness.

It handily eclipsed the previous biggest Ryder Cup foursomes win 44 years ago, when Americans Tom Kite and Hale Irwin thumped Ken Brown and Des Smyth 7 and 6.

Scheffler and Koepka's games broke down in the face of an unprecedented onslaught and the former was left with his head in his hands after conceding the match at the 11th, a series of duffed shots over the green leaving him and his partner no option but to admit defeat.

"I don't think we could have done a whole lot better," said Hovland, possibly the world's most in-form golfer.

"He's a stud (Aberg). He doesn't miss a shot, so it's easy when I'm playing well and he's playing well and we are just feeding off of each other."

Donald opted to switch the usual schedule and open with the alternate shot foursomes instead of fourballs and his team have made sure that decision has paid off handsomely.

The Americans didn't win a single match in a day for the first ever time on Friday but did manage to get some red on the board on Saturday through Max Homa and Brian Harman, who cruised to a 4 and 2 win over Shane Lowry and Sepp Straka.

Homa and Harman will be straight back out in the afternoon's fourballs against Tommy Fleetwood and Nicolai Hojgaard.

"We obviously are in a big hole, but we have the right guys to dig ourselves out of it," said Homa.

However Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton secured a dramatic 2 and 1 victory against Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay to ensure Europe won a third straight session.

And Rory McIlroy and Fleetwood won their second straight foursomes match to complete another morning rout, this time claiming the spoils 2 and 1 over Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth after Northern Irishman McIlroy sank a 15-footer on 17.

The European duo had been three up with six to play but formidable matchplay duo Thomas and Spieth gave the Americans hope of salvaging some pride until a collapse on the penultimate hole gave McIlroy the chance to seal the point.

"They get more special as you go on because you realise you don't have that many left. Hopefully I have a few Ryder Cups left in me," said four-time major winner McIlroy.&nbsp;

"It's been an absolute pleasure to share the golf course with this man beside me over the last couple of days."

It was another brilliant end to a session on a day which started in emotional fashion as glorious sunshine slowly crept over the course and buoyant home fans chanted "Europe's on fire, USA is terrified" before the start of play.

Supporters unfurled a large banner depicting Spanish Ryder Cup icon Seve Ballesteros, bringing vice-captain Jose Maria Olazabal to the verge of tears at the Italian message "forever in our hearts".

A large and loud crowd have delighted in the performance of the European team, and the players have responded to that passion with performances that will leave the USA's chances all-but gone if they don't turn the tide in the afternoon's fourballs.

Rory McIlroy says he is at the front of the Ludvig Aberg "bandwagon" as the rising star prepares to make his Ryder Cup debut later this month.

Aberg was hailed as a generational talent by Europe captain Luke Donald after he gave the 23-year-old Swede one of his six wild cards for the upcoming contest against the United States.

The former world number one amateur only turned professional in June but won the final qualifying event in Switzerland and will make the quickest transition from the amateur ranks to the Ryder Cup in the contest's history.

Four-time major winner McIlroy, in the field for this week's BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, said he had played alongside Aberg in practice at the Ryder Cup venue, near Rome, this week.

World number two McIlroy teamed up with Tommy Fleetwood, losing to Aberg and Viktor Hovland.

"I had an opportunity to play with Ludvig for the first time on Monday, which I was excited about," he said. "I told him I've been looking forward to this for a while."

Asked if Aberg had lived up to his expectations, Mcllroy added: "Probably exceeded them. Everyone talks about what a great driver of the golf ball he is, which he is.

"The ball-striking is incredible. But I was really impressed with his wedge play and how he can sort of control his trajectory with shorter clubs. I was on the bandwagon before and I'm certainly at the front of it now."

McIlroy partnered Shane Lowry and Ian Poulter, twice, in the last Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits in 2021, but lost all three matches.

He beat Xander Schauffele in the opening singles on the final day but Europe crashed to a humiliating 19-9 defeat.

The 34-year-old, who was left out of a session for the first time since making his debut in 2010, talked of the pain of the defeat.

"We're not used to playing for other people in this game, and you go out there and you're playing for your team-mates, you want to do well for them," he said.

"I felt like I didn't do that and I felt like I didn't give a good account of myself and that stung and the scoreline stung."

The Ryder Cup takes place at the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club from September 29 to October 1.
