Reportedly, Jenny Mitchell filed a civil lawsuit saying she had been using L'Oreal's chemical hair straightening products for more than two decades which caused uterine cancer and forced her to undergo a full hysterectomy. Under a hysterectomy, a woman's womb (uterus) is removed which means they cannot get pregnant after the operation. Ben Crump, an attorney representing Mitchell said his client sought damages from the French company, among others. Crump also added that Black women were particularly made the target of such dangerous products. "Black women have long been the victims of dangerous products specifically marketed to them," said Crump. "We will likely discover that Ms Mitchell's tragic case is one of countless cases in which companies aggressively misled Black women to increase their profits." Earlier, Black women across the US had also blamed Johnson & Johnson for selling talc-based powder that contained cancer-causing material like asbestos and was particularly marketed towards the dark-skinned demography of consumers. The study incorporated data from almost 34,000 women in the United States over a period of around 11 years (10.9 to be exact). Participants were aged between 35 to 74 years. "We estimated that 1.64 per cent of women who never used hair straighteners would go on to develop uterine cancer by the age of 70, but for frequent users, that risk goes up to 4.05 per cent," said Alexandra White of the US National Institute of Environmental Health Safety (NIEHS) and the lead author of the study. The study did not find any racial linkages, but due to the fact that black women are more frequent users of these products and tend to start using them at a younger age, the researchers stress the importance the findings could have for them. Alibaba said on Tuesday&nbsp;that 299 brands surpassed 100 million yuan in gross merchandise value, including LVMH's Givenchy, home appliance manufacturers Dyson and Philips and sportswear maker Under Armour.

Fifteen brands made over 1 billion yuan in sales, it said. These included Huawei Technologies, Apple, Nike, Xiaomi Corp and Fast Retailing's Uniqlo.

Food supplements were the most popular import product, while sales of makeup, diapers and face wash were also strong.

Sales growth for the annual&nbsp;shopping&nbsp;festival this year eased to 26 per cent, the weakest since the event started in 2009, in a reflection of how e-commerce sales in China have been slowing.

Analysts, however, said the growth rate had slightly beaten their expectations, saying that more aggressive promotions, a focus on attracting more customers from rural cities, and even the overall slowing economy might have helped as people sought to buy goods at discounted prices.

Citic Securities had predicted a 20-25 per cent&nbsp;expansion, while Daiwa Capital Markets had an estimate of 23 per cent.

"What's happened is that you've had a lot of consumers this year being a little bit more careful about their purchasing because the economy's slowing down," said Ben Cavender, managing director of consultancy China Market Research Group.

"I think this year especially, people were kind of waiting for&nbsp;Singles'&nbsp;Day&nbsp;and kind of waiting to make some of those medium-sized purchases that they didn't want to pay full price for."

The event has been replicated at home and abroad, with&nbsp;Singles'&nbsp;Day&nbsp;promotions found at rivals such as China's JD.com and Pinduoduo as well as South Korea's 11thStreet and Singapore's Qoo10.

JD.com, which started its sales campaign on November&nbsp;1, said transaction volume exceeded 204.4 billion yuan over the eleven&nbsp;days.
