According to Russian media, Russia’s Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin has instructed the Ministry of Defence to commence negotiations with their Indian counterparts to finalise the document. The agreement, if accepted, will be effective for a period of five years and will be subject to automatic renewal unless either party decides to terminate it.

This draft logistics pact is a continuation of the longstanding military relationship between Russia and India. In 2021, the two countries signed a comprehensive agreement on military-technical cooperation extending until 2030.

Belarusian Railways is planning to enhance co-operation with China's state-owned corporation Jiangsu Suzhou Port Group Co Ltd., said Belarusian news outlet Belta. The news report stated that top officials of Belarusian Railways met representatives of Jiangshu province. The meet took place at the headquarters of Belarusian Railways. The aim behind the meeting was to create stable channels of logistics and transportation for movement of cargo between the two countries.

Vladimir Morozov, the head of Belarusian Railways was reportedly present in the meeting along with heads of different departments of the company. The state enterprise BTLC was also represented from the Belarusian side of the meeting.

From the Chinese side, the Jiangshu Province delegation included Wu Hong, the President of Jiangshu Suzhou Port Group. Additionally, Director of the Commerce Department of the&nbsp;Shanghai government was present.

Belta reported that both sides discussed Belarussian Railways' cooperation with Jiangsu Suzhou Port Group. Both sides will reportedly take a close look at various options that include land routes and sea ports that will involve Russian Federation as well.

The regime in Belarus, a former Soviet state, is considered to be a close ally of Russia. Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko received strong backing from Russian President Vladimir Putin during nationwide anti-Lukasgenko protests in Belarus.

Lukashenko, in turn has been helpful to Russia before and during its invasion of Ukraine.

The conflict in Ukraine has brought Russia and China closer as well. China has been providing diplomatic cover to Russia in global bodies such as the United Nations, and has also helped it economically when stringent Western sanctions aimed at stifling Russia's channels to raise funds came into effect.

After Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Russia and China have attempted to bring together countries which are traditionally viewed to be antagonistic to US-led Western bloc. When seen in this light, co-operation between Russia and Belarus assumes important geopolitical dimensions.

Belarus, China look to enhance transport, logistics to boost trade, cargo movement

India will soon negotiate a logistics sharing deal that would allow their armed forces to share military facilities, sources said in Delhi on Thursday.

The logistics pact, called Acquisition and Cross-Servicing Agreement, is expected to enhance the strategic depth of bilateral security and defence cooperation between the two countries.&nbsp;

The deal is also seen as a way to counter China's expanding presence in the India Ocean.

Negotiations between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on the logistics agreement took place during the former's visit to Japan in October.

While the deal will not only allow the navies of the two nations to cooperate with greater interoperability, it will also allow them to have access to their respective ports and bases.

In November, India and Japan conducted their first land-based joint military exercise.&nbsp;

The agreement was signed following talks between the Indian defence minister Mr Manohar Parrikar and his American counterpart, the US defence secretary Ashton Carter, at the Pentagon. 
 
Parrikar, at a joint news conference with Carter after the two leaders held talks at the Pentagon yesterday, made it clear that &quot;there is no provision for any base or any sort of activities to set up a base in India&rdquo;.&nbsp; 
 
&quot;It (LEMOA) doesn&#39;t have anything to do with the setting up of base. It&#39;s basically logistics support to each other&#39;s fleet, like supply of fuel, supply of many other things which are required for joint operations, humanitarian assistance and many other relief operations. 
 
&quot;So, it basically will ensure that both navies can be supportive of each other in the joint venture operations we do, exercises we do,&quot; Parrikar told reporters. 
 
Carter said the agreement would make joint operations between their militaries logistically easier and more efficient.&nbsp; 
 
&quot;It is fully mutual. In other words, we grant one another completely equal access and ease under this agreement. It&#39;s not a basing agreement of any kind, but it does make the logistics of joint operations so much easier and so much more efficient,&quot; he said. 
 
India and the US had agreed in principle to sign the pact in April this year when Carter visited New Delhi, but the details were still to be finalised.&nbsp; 
 
LEMOA is similar to the Logistics Support Agreement or LSA which the US has signed with some of its closest defence partners but its (LEMOA&rsquo;s) language has been tweaked to accommodate India&#39;s sensitivities and concerns.&nbsp; 
 
The US has been pushing India to sign the the LSA since 2004 but the then Indian government led by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had had concerns such an agreement would commit it to hosting US troops at its bases, or draw it into a military alliance with the United States and undermine its traditional autonomy.&nbsp;
