A female professor of Kolkata's St Xavier's University was asked to resign and pay a fine of 99 crores ($12.4 million) after she posted a picture of herself in a bikini on the social media platform Instagram.

The university's decision has triggered a privacy debate on social media with netizens asking whether it is alright to judge someone's professional capability on the basis of their personal life.

It comes after the female teacher moved to another state and filed a written petition in Calcutta High Court against the university's decision of asking her for an ''unconditional apology'' due to the ''immense and irreparable damage'' caused by her to its reputation.

The female teacher has argued that a student's guardian complained about her personal photos to the vice-chancellor of the university but she did not receive any copy of the written complaint.

The guardian said, ''I was appalled to find my son looking at some pictures of Prof. where she has posed in a sexually explicit way causing deliberate public exposure.''

''To look at a teacher dressed in her undergarments and uploading pictures on social media is utterly shameful for me as a parent since I have tried to shield my son from this kind of gross indecency and objectification of the female body. It is obscene, vulgar and improper for a 18-year-old student to see his professor dressed in scanty clothes exhibiting her body on a public platform.''

According to her, ''I heard what was read out and was asked to quit.''

Filing a complaint at the Jadavpur police station, she is inquiring how her posts on Instagram were leaked to a third person when they should have been accessible to only her close group of friends.

''It's important to find out if her social media expression had affected her teaching duties; if not, then connecting social media expression to professional duties is not justified,'' said Upal Chakrabarti, assistant professor of sociology at Presidency University.&nbsp;

Four years ago, Xavier's University issued a controversial circular stating “Avoid wearing revealing and indecent dresses like too short pants from January 2018."

The Kolkata High Court on Monday amended its May 23 interim order directing the counsel of former Kolkata police commissioner Rajeev Kumar, accused in the multi-crore Saradha chit fund scam, to seek the permission of CBI, twenty-four hours before giving consultation to the former top cop.

A single bench of Justice Madhumati Mitra amended the order, which further stated that the consultation between Rajeev and his lawyer Milan Mukhopadhyay can take place only twice a week.

The matter is slated to be heard tomorrow.

In the May 23 interim order, the high court had directed Rajeev to submit his passport to the CBI and prevented the investigating agency from arresting him for custodial interrogation in connection with the scam.

An unprecedented chain of events had unfolded on February 3 when a CBI team reached Kumar's residence to question him. The team was detained, taken to a police station and was later released.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had also visited the officer's residence.

Retired Kolkata High Court judge Justice CS Karnan, who was arrested and jailed in connection with a contempt of court case, was released from Presidency Jail on Wednesday.

Justice Karnan was arrested by the Kolkata Police in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, on June 20.

He was later lodged in Kolkata&#39;s Presidency Jail after the Supreme Court refused to grant him interim bail.

A vacation bench of the apex court, headed by Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul, had refused to suspend the six-month prison sentence for Justice Karnan in the case.

Mathew J Nedumpara, a lawyer appearing for Justice Karnan, mentioned the matter before the vacation bench of the top court.

Nedumpara pleaded to the apex court seeking bail and suspension of the six months jail sentence, to which the court observed, &quot;The seven-judge bench had passed the order. It binds everybody. It binds us also.&quot;

The apex court had on May 19 rejected Justice Karnan&#39;s plea for recall of the six-month jail term for contempt of court, stating that the petition was &quot;not maintainable&quot; in the court.

&quot;I am constrained, but to hold that the present writ petition is not maintainable. The relief, if any, lies somewhere else. I, thus, see no reasonable cause to receive the present writ petition for registration under the provisions of order XV, rule (5) of the Supreme Court rules, 2013,&quot; the Supreme Court Registrar said in the order.

Justice Karnan had approached the apex court seeking the recall of its order in which he was convicted and was sentenced to six-month imprisonment.

The top court took suo motu cognizance of numerous letters written by him against judges of the Madras High Court and the apex court and restrained him from exercising administrative and judicial powers from February 8.

Karnan is the first ever sitting judge of a higher court in judicial history to be sentenced to jail term.
