<p>The NYU team on Wednesday (April 24) said that Pisano is recovering well and that she is the second patient to ever receive a pig kidney after a historic transplant was completed successfully at the Massachusetts General Hospital last month.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On April 4, Pisano received the heart pump and then she got a gene-edited pig kidney along with the pig’s thymus gland on April 12.&nbsp;</p>

<p>NYU Langone Health said that her case is the first to be reported where a person has received an organ transplant along with a mechanical heart pump.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Woman recovers after historic surgery, takes first steps&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>The 54-year-old has been recovering fast from the surgery and recently took her first few steps.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Speaking to The Associated Press, Pisano&nbsp;said, “I was at the end of my rope. I just took a chance. And you know, worst case scenario, if it didn’t work for me, it might have worked for someone else&nbsp;and&nbsp;it&nbsp;could have helped the next person.”</p>

<p>The director of NYU Langone Transplant Institute, Dr Robert Montgomery remembered the cheers he heard in the operating room just after the organ started making urine immediately.</p>

<p>Speaking about the woman's health condition&nbsp;prior to&nbsp;the surgery, Montgomery said Pisano “was getting sicker and sicker, and really, her life expectancy could be measured in days or weeks". He added that her situation was a "medical Catch-22".</p>

<p>“She had both heart and kidney failure but was not a candidate for a combined heart and kidney transplant because of her other health conditions,” Montgomery stated.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, transplant experts have kept a close watch on how the patient is performing.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the United States, more than 100,000 people are on the&nbsp;waiting list for a kidney.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In order to increase the supply of organs for transplant, scientists have successfully altered the blood type of the donor's kidneys.</p>

<p>Highlighting the implications of the breakthrough, researchers said it will especially be beneficial for minority groups as they find it harder to find a match.</p>

<p>In comparison to white patients, black and other ethnic minority groups often have to wait a year longer as they are more likely to have the rarer B-type blood group.</p>

<p>Both organ donor and receiver need to have the same blood group for the transplant to take place successfully.</p>

<p>While people from those communities make up 33 per cent of the kidney transplant waiting list, just over 9 per cent of total organ donations came from black and other minority ethnic donors during 2020-2021.</p>

<p>To allow more transplants to take place, researchers have changed the blood type to the universal O as this can be used for people with any blood type.</p>

<p>For flushing blood infused with an enzyme through the deceased donor’s kidney, researchers at the University of Cambridge used a normothermic perfusion machine that connects with a human kidney to ensure that oxygenated blood passes through the organ to better preserve it for future use.</p>

<p>Effectively changing its blood type to type O, the enzyme removes the blood-type markers that line the blood vessels of the organ.</p>

<p>''Our confidence was really boosted after we applied the enzyme to a piece of human kidney tissue and saw very quickly that the antigens were removed,'' said Serena MacMillan, a PhD student at the University of Cambridge.</p>

<p>The team will look at how the approach might be used in a clinical setting after testing the reintroduction of other blood types.</p>

To allow more transplants to take place, researchers have changed the blood type to the universal O as this can be used for people with any blood type. For flushing blood infused with an enzyme through the deceased donor’s kidney, researchers at the University of Cambridge used a normothermic perfusion machine that connects with a human kidney to ensure that oxygenated blood passes through the organ to better preserve it for future use. Effectively changing its blood type to type O, the enzyme removes the blood-type markers that line the blood vessels of the organ. ''Our confidence was really boosted after we applied the enzyme to a piece of human kidney tissue and saw very quickly that the antigens were removed,'' said Serena MacMillan, a PhD student at the University of Cambridge. This left him dependent on dialysis.</p>

It was on July 10th that Dr. S.Saravanan, Vascular and Transplant surgeon at MMM, performed the third transplant surgery on the patient.&nbsp;</p>

Additionally, there was the issue of placing the kidney in a body cavity that was already housing four kidneys.&nbsp;</p>

He means to say that the peritoneum (a cavity that holds the intestine) had to be opened up, in a risky procedure for the kidney to be placed safely.&nbsp;</p>

Johns Hopkins University Hospital received authorization in 2016 to move ahead with the first transplant from a living donor with HIV. Surgeons had been waiting to find compatible patients.<br />

Martinez and the recipient of her&nbsp;kidney&nbsp;will have to keep taking their anti-retroviral medication.<br />

"The doors are now open for people living with HIV to become&nbsp;kidney&nbsp;donors," said Segev.&nbsp;"Now anybody can do this anywhere in the world, provided that they screen the patients accordingly.<br />

"For us, this is not only a celebration of transplantation but a celebration of the progress of HIV care," he said.<br />

US performs first kidney transplant from living donor with HIV

<p>Union Minister Arun Jaitley held a meeting with the officials of Finance Ministry on Monday after he returned home post&nbsp;successful&nbsp;kidney transplant surgery.</p>

<p>The meeting which lasted for around half an hour was attended by Finance Secretary Hasmukh Adhia, Department of Economic Affairs Secretary Subhash Chandra Garg and Chief Economic Advisor Arvind Subramanian.</p>

<p>In the meeting, the officials briefed Jaitley on various issues related to the Ministry.</p>

<p>A senior official told ANI on the condition of anonymity, "The meeting was held today in the evening through Video Conferencing. It was a stock-taking exercise by Arun Jaitley as he was admitted in AIIMS for past three weeks. Currently, he is under the supervision of doctors and is in a controlled environment".</p>

<p>Jaitley, who had undergone a kidney transplant last month, announced his well being on Twitter today.</p>

<p>He took to Twitter to thank the doctors, nurses and paramedics who assisted him during his treatment.</p>

<p>His twitter read, "Delighted to be back at Home. My gratitude to the Doctors, Nursing officers and the paramedics who looked after me for over the past three weeks. I wish to thank all well-wishers, colleagues and friends who were very concerned and continued to wish me for my recovery".</p>

<p>Jaitley underwent a successful kidney transplant at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on May 14.</p>

<p>Before the treatment, the 65-year-old minister was put on a dialysis for one month.</p>

<p>In September 2014, Jaitley underwent a bariatric surgery to treat weight gain because of a long-standing diabetic condition. The surgery was first performed at Max Hospital, but he had to be later shifted to AIIMS because of complications.</p>

<p>Jaitley had a heart surgery several years ago.</p>

<p>Finance minister Arun Jaitley on Saturday underwent a series of medical tests at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) ahead of his kidney transplant surgery.</p>

<p>Jaitley, 65, who was admitted to AIIMS Friday evening in New Delhi, has been kept under observation. Sources said that keeping a kidney transplant patient under one-day observation is a routine medical procedure and his surgery is likely to be done on Sunday. The Union minister also underwent some medical tests following his admission to the hospital.</p>

<p>Jaitley is suffering from a kidney ailment and has not been attending office since Monday. He has not even taken oath of office after being re-elected to the Rajya Sabha. He has also been forced to cancel domestic public appearances as well as foreign visits, including a London visit scheduled for next week. The Finance Minister was to attend the 10th UK-India Economic and Financial Dialogue in London.</p>

<p>On Thursday, the Finance Minister had confirmed about his ailment with a post on Twitter. “I am being treated for kidney related problems & certain infections that I have contracted. I am therefore currently working from controlled environment at home. The future course of my treatment would be determined by the doctors treating me,” he had tweeted.</p>
