<p>Ministry of information and broadcasting appointed veteran actor <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/anupam-kher-appointed-new-ftii-chairman-21276" target="_blank">Anupam Kher as the new Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) chairman</a>&nbsp;on Wednesday.</p>

<p>Kher will be succeeding Gajendra Chauhan whose appointment in 2014 had triggered widespread student protests.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On Kher&#39;s appointment as his successor, Chauhan who completed his tenure in March was quoted by IANS: &quot; FTII needed a good administrator more than a good actor.&quot;</p>

<p>When told of Chauhan&#39;s statement that sounded like a dig, Kher, according to IANS replied, &quot;See, it is not dignified to comment on someone&#39;s words that he said in a certain context. I think it is a great honour and a great sense of responsibility as well.&quot;</p>

<p>He added,&nbsp;&quot;I would love to facilitate students rather than setting agenda like an administrator. I want to interact with students to understand their requirements, and along with faculties, I would be helping students for their betterment.&quot;</p>

<p>Kher went on to say that he is a son of a &quot;government clerk who came to Mumbai with 40 rupees in the pocket&quot;&nbsp;and today whatever respect he has earned is through his &quot;hard work and blessings of the Almighty&quot;.</p>

<p>He said,&nbsp;&quot;I couldn&#39;t have asked for more. So, I am content.&quot;</p>

<p>Kher had also been involved in a war of words with Chauhan when at the time of his appointment as FTII chairman, Kher had said that &quot;the FTII needed a person with much more qualifications than Chauhan had as a producer, director or actor&quot;.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Anupam Kher is a National Award winner, who began his acting career with the film &quot;Saaransh&quot; in 1984 and has done more than 500 films.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He has also served as the Chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), and from 2001 to 2004 served as the Director of National School of Drama.&nbsp;</p>
