<p>India's Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on Thursday (May 30) said they have detained an air hostess for allegedly smuggling nearly one kilogram of gold from Muscat to Kannur by hiding it in her rectum. Surabhi Khatun, a native of Kolkata, was detained on May 28 as she landed at the Kannur International Airport.&nbsp;</p>

<p>News agency Press Trust of India (PTI) quoted a DRI official as saying it is the first case in India where an airline crew has been arrested for smuggling gold by hiding it inside&nbsp;rectum.</p>

<p>Following her detention, necessary formalities were completed and Surabhi was duly interrogated. After that, she was produced before the jurisdictional magistrate and subsequently remanded to 14 days to a women's prison in Kannur.</p>

<p>The toll touched 410, with 14 deaths during the past few days being confirmed due to COVID-19, she said.<br />
Of the positive cases, 2,738 were infected through contact and the source of infection of 285 people were not known.</p>

<p>Forty five of those infected had come from abroad and 134 from other states.</p>

<p>Fifty two health workers were among those who tested positive today-- the highest from Thiruvananthapuram and Kannur, with 15 each, the minister said in a press release.</p>

<p>While 73,904 have so far recovered from the disease, including 1,326 whose samples returned negative today, 27,877 are presently undergoing treatment.</p>

<p>A total of 2.03 lakh people are under observation,of whom 21,492 are in hospitals, including 2,689 admitted today.</p>

<p>In the last 24 hours 35,056 samples have been tested and so far 20,53,801 samples have been sent for testing.<br />
Thiruvananthapuram reported 494 cases, followed by Malappuram 390, Kollam 302, Ernakulam 295, Kozhikode 261, Kannur 256, Kottayam 221 and Alappuzha 200.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">On May 27, a pregnant elephant was fed a pineapple stuffed with crackers after she strayed into a village in Kerala’s Mannarkad in Palakkad district in search of food. The crackers exploded inside the elephant’s mouth and caused severe injuries after which she was unable to eat anything.</p>

<p>Soon after they were found unconscious in their room, authorities airlifted them to a Kathmandu hospital where the staff declared them dead.</p>

<p>"All eight were airlifted and brought to hospital in Kathmandu. A doctor from the Indian mission was also immediately sent to the concerned hospital to check on the welfare of patients and to provide necessary assistance," the Indian Embassy stated. <p>Although they had booked a total of four rooms, eight of them stayed in a room and remaining others in another room, the manager said, adding that all the windows and the door of the room were bolted from inside.</p>

<p>The Indian mission has assured all necessary assistance to the family members of the victims.</p>
