The brutal killing of a pregnant wild elephant in Kerala has led to widespread outrage all over India. The pregnant elephant was offered a pineapple filled with powerful firecrackers that burst inside her mount when she chomped on it. Hours later, in pain and shock, the elephant breathed her last, along with her baby inside her, in Velliyar River under Mannarkkad forest division on May 27.

While the internet has been condemning the barbaric act, popular personalities have been calling for strict action against the perpetrator. Indian skipper Virat Kohli took to social media platform Twitter to post about the saddening incident as he wrote: “Appalled to hear about what happened in Kerala. Let's treat our animals with love and bring an end to these cowardly acts.” Kohli's wife and Bollywood superstar Anushka Sharma also expressed her anger and sadness after the incident.

The information of the pregnant elephant’s death came to light after Mohan Krishnan, a forest officer, wrote an emotional post on his Facebook page, narrating her death in the Velliyar River.

“When we saw her she was standing in the river, with her head dipped in the water. She had a sixth sense that she was going to die. She took the Jalasamadhi in the river in a standing position,” Mr. Krishnan, who was deputed to bring the elephant back to the shore, wrote.
