His wife, Dimple Yadav, and father, the late Mulayam Singh Yadav, also contested this seat in the past. Akhilesh Yadav's homecoming Yadav's return to Kannauj means that SP leader Tej Pratap Singh Yadav, who was nominated as the candidate earlier this week, will not run for this seat. Tej Pratap Yadav is Akhilesh Yadav's nephew and the grandson of Mulayam Yadav's brother Ranveer. He won the Mainpuri seat in the 2014 election. According to reports, the change was due to tension among SP workers on the ground, who wanted the party head to run for the family seat. The seat was won by Akhilesh Yadav in the 2000 by-election, and he held it in the general elections of 2004 and 2009. Dimple Yadav, Akhilesh Yadav's wife, won the seat in 2012 by-polls. She retained it in the 2014 election but lost to BJP's Subrat Pathak in 2019. She was later fielded from Mainpuri in the 2022 by-poll following the death of Mulayam Singh Yadav. She is again contesting from the Mainpuri seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. In this election, the SP has allied with the Congress-led INDIA Bloc. It is contesting 63 of Uttar Pradesh's 80 Lok Sabha seats. The remaining 17 have been given to Congress. Kannauj will vote in the fourth phase of the 2024 elections, on May 13.

Booth number 35 and 435 of Chhibramau area in Kannauj witnessed long queues of people waiting at the polling station, awaiting the start of the polling process.

Voters in the queue alleged that not a single vote could be cast at the booth since the morning."It hasn't been working since the polling started at 7 am. Not even one vote has been cast here. Voting has not started because of a glitch in EVM," one of the voters waiting in queue claimed.

Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party MLA Arvind Kumar Singh also wrote a letter to Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) highlighting EVM malfunctions at several booths including two booths of Kannauj parliamentary constituency.

Glitch in EVM delays polling in two booths of Kannauj

On the International Women’s Day, the Samajwadi Party on Friday announced the candidature of three women, including party chief Akhilesh Yadav’s wife Dimple Yadav, for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls from Uttar Pradesh.

Dimple Yadav will contest from Kannauj constituency, from where the 41-year-old has already been elected twice -- in 2012 by-polls and 2014 general elections.

Purvi Verma has been fielded from Khiri constituency and Usha Verma from Hardoi, according a press statement issued by the party.

Earlier in the day, the party released <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/lok-sabha-polls-samajwadi-party-releases-list-of-6-candidates-mulayam-singh-yadav-to-fight-from-mainpuri-201964">its first list of six candidates</a> for the polls.

According to that list, party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav will contest from Mainpuri constituency, his nephew Dharmendra Yadav from Badaun and cousin Ram Gopal Yadav's son Akshay Yadav from Firozabad.

In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, the party had won just 5 out of 80 seats at stake in the state.

Besides Dimple, Mulayam had won from Azamgarh, Dharmendra Yadav from Badaun, Akshay Yadav from Firozabad and Tej Pratap Yadav from Mainpuri.

The party also announced the candidates for three reserved constituencies- Itawa, Robertsganj and Bahraich.

According to the list, Kamlesh Katheria will contest the Etawah reserved seat, Bhailal Kol has been fielded on Robertsganj reserved seat, and Shabbir Balmiki from Bahraich.

The Samajwadi Party is contesting the polls in alliance with BSP. According to the seat-sharing arrangement, Samajwadi Party will contest 37 seats while BSP will contest 38.
