A report by the news agency Reuters said that the widening fallout over vehicle certification tests stem from a safety test scandal at Toyota's Daihatsu compact car unit and has spread to other Japanese automakers. On Monday, the transport ministry had announced plans to carry out the investigation when it said that Toyota, Mazda, Honda, Suzuki and Yamaha Motor were found to have submitted either flawed or manipulated data when applying for certification of vehicles. Shares of Toyota were down 1.1 per cent on Tuesday morning. Toyota chairperson issues apology On Monday, Toyota's chairperson Akio Toyoda apologised for lapses in the certification process of some of its vehicles. Addressing a press conference, Toyoda said that the correct certification process" had not been followed at Toyota Group companies, which include Daihatsu, truck brand Hino and Toyota itself. "In order to be mass produced and sold, vehicles must meet the standards of the certification process. The problem in this case was that they were mass-produced and sold without going through the correct certification process," Toyoda told reporters "As the person responsible for the Toyota Group, I would like to sincerely apologise to our customers, car enthusiasts and all stakeholders for the problems that have occurred within the Group.
